Refinements to a mathematical model of human drivers' steering control incorporating driver learning are reported. State estimation and realistic sensorimotor noise sources are introduced to the driver model to better represent neural processes. It is found that the driver model exhibits the expected learning behaviour in terms of estimation and control performance. Further work is planned to validate the model experimentally.

Radiation detectors are essential for upholding nuclear security and safety. The main objective of this study is to design and develop a new radiation detection system that can locate the position of a radioactive source using Geiger-Muller (GM) detectors. Three GM detectors are utilized in this system, with their relative angles known. The system collects data on radiation exposure levels in the immediate area surrounding the GM detectors and sends it to a Raspberry Pi 4 processor. After that, a MATLAB algorithm analyzes the data using localization methods to determine the source direction. To provide a user-friendly experience when using the system, a graphical user interface (GUI) was designed and implemented to be used with the system. The benefit of the localization methods that can be applied with MATLAB algorithms is that they offer great accuracy, rapid response, and low cost. The methods can be applied in fields like environmental monitoring, homeland security, and nuclear power plant safety, in addition to locating lost radioactive materials and other radiation security and safety concerns. An experimental setup is prepared to test the radiation detection system in a laboratory environment. A Cs-137-point source was used to study the system response. The results show that the system can detect a point source accurately when the source is stationary, while the location is not as accurate while the source is moving.

This work addresses the relevant issue of objectively evaluating the useful life of mechanical components through life cycle and cost analysis, when destinated to remanufacturing in agricultural machinery field. The goal is to identify the most efficient strategic choices for predicting and managing the end of life of a component/product to maximize profit and minimize consumption of economic and natural resources. The approach of Design for Remanufacturing and Design for Extension of Life is presented as effective solutions to extend the useful life of structural mechanical components, making them suitable for multiple remanufacturing process, and emphasizing the importance of considering long-term implications on the product and entire system life cycle. Life cycle analysis (LCA) and costing (LCC) are described as the proper tools to evaluate alternatives and identify which design scheme can ensure maximum profit and minimum consumption of material and energy. Specifically, the article proposes a methodology to compare between producing more components with the current design that will undergo fewer rework cycles or producing fewer components with the updated design that will undergo more regeneration cycles. The main questions that the article seeks to answer are: to what extent is it profitable, from an economic and natural resource perspective, to extend the useful life of a structural mechanical component in prevision of remanufacturing processes? What is the design scheme that can ensure maximum profit and minimum consumption of material and energy? Objective evaluation of process alternatives, considering design for remanufacturing and life extension, can provide a multi-objective optimal solution that maximizes product value and minimizes environmental impact.

Flat-plate pulsating heat pipes (FPPHPs) are a promising technology for the thermal management of power electronics as they can be integrated into thin layers of the substrate structure. By means of a thermally self-driven internal two-phase flow the limitations of thermal conduction through solids in conventional structures can be mitigated. However, in real power electronic applications of traction inverters, the heat dissipation highly varies over time according to the mission profile. Therefore, the aim of the present work is to evaluate the junction temperature response of thermal pulse square waves in a chip based on a FPPHP. The experimental setup is modeled by a FEA approach to assess the physics of the FPPHPs transient heat transfer characteristics. Finally, the dynamic behavior is modeled by a systems identification approach, which allows to monitor the operation by implementation on an electronic control unit.

Identification of tyre grip is crucial for ensuring safety and performance. To develop new tyres matching the requirements for grip, extensive testing is required both indoor and outdoor, which is time-consuming and costly. Therefore, the possibility to assess their performance in laboratory before manufacturing a full tyre appears very attractive. On this purpose, the present paper compares the peak of the friction coefficient, evaluated using a Laboratory Abrasion Tester (LAT100) on two compounds and the grip assessed through MTS Flat-Trac machine tests on two full tyres having the same structure and made of the compounds tested on the LAT100. An ad hoc procedure for driving the test on the LAT100 and make them comparable with the full-tyre data was developed. A good correlation was found for the dependency of the friction coefficient on temperature and load, highlighting the possibility of using LAT100 tests to gain information about tyre performance, before the manufacturing of the full tyre.

Flexible manufacturing systems in high-mix low-volume segments offer many challenges in terms of planning and scheduling. The complexity of these systems often requires a systemic approach for which humans are the perfect actors. However, computer systems can support scheduling tasks more effectively due to their capacity to synthesize large amounts of data. This paper describes a system developed for the flexible manufacturing of wooden doors with a wide range of product configurations. This paper proposes a rule-based scheduling method for high-mix production. The method was applied and validated at a wooden door producer. Based on the company's production schedule for a given week, a scheduling program was developed that suggested minor rearrangements for production leveling. As the rule-based approach makes the decisions verifiable, the program was validated at the producer, through a case study of production leveling under volume constraints. The results include the complete elimination of changeovers and the stabilization of throughput, which improved the precision of the delivery time. The producer is integrating the program into their production planning and control system. Thus, the results suggest that the proposed method can be useful for scheduling high-mix low-volume production, and merits further validation in similar environments.

P2 resonance affects irregular wear of wheel and rail profiles, which are the main source of noise and vibration in railway operations. The vibrations of multiple wheels and track coupled systems are investigated, and the natural frequencies and mode shapes are determined by solving the characteristic equation with Green's function and Laplace transform. The proposed method provides the basis for further studies on irregular wear of contact surfaces, such as rail corrugation and wheel out-of-roundness, and for measures to mitigate ground vibration in railway operations.

The naval industry and oil and gas exploration are areas of great demand for the use of materials, since some applications require high resistance to corrosion, with duplex stainless steel being the most used (DSS). However, DSS is known to be difficult to machine when compared to other materials. Thus, it becomes necessary to make coatings, on DSS tools, to overcome this difficulty, taking advantage of its properties. In the present work, two TiAlSiN coatings obtained with two different structures, single-layer, and multilayer, were studied. These coatings were obtained by high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). In the deposition process, targets with different atomic contents of titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), and nitrogen (N) were used. In the first coating process, four TiAlSi targets (38/57/5 at.%) were used, and in the second, two TiAl targets (30/70 at.%) plus two TiSi targets (90/10 at.%). The coatings were characterized, and differences in morphology and mechanical properties of coated tools were validated. Machining tests were carried out with constant values for axial and radial depth of cut and cutting speed for different length and feed. After the tests, it was verified that the tools coated with multilayer TiAlSiN exhibited better performance in machined surface quality, sustained flank wear, and general sustained wear. Also, the multilayer structure promotes greater hardness and adhesive strength, thus improving the wear resistance of the coating. The wear mechanisms were more intense in single-layer coated tools, namely, abrasive wear andmaterial adhesion.

In the rapidly advancing realm of Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), achieving reliable and precise positioning is of paramount importance. This paper presents a comprehensive approach integrating vehicular sensing, communication, and advanced filtering techniques to enhance vehicle positioning in urban areas. By leveraging LiDAR point clouds along with a light and accurate object detector, we create cohesive environmental sensing that improves situational awareness in autonomous systems. Central to our methodology is the integration of the Labeled Multi-Bernoulli Mixture (LMBM) filter, which offers a probabilistic framework for dynamic state estimation in environments characterized by high uncertainty and clutter. In turn, enhanced object locations are exploited as anchors for vehicular self-localization via an Extended Kalman filter (EKF). Our experimental results show that the proposed solution significantly enhances vehicular positioning accuracy.

All major urban areas throughout the world have underground metro systems for their mass rapid transit systems. To safeguard human life and enhance service efficiency, it is crucial to understand how underground tunnels are affected by earthquakes. For their seismic analysis, choosing an earthquake ground motion that is maximum and realistic which are crucial. In this essay, the case history of the subterranean Surat metro tunnels is examined, along with how they responded to the 2001 Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat. The time-based history of the earthquake used for analysis is done matches the projected earthquake at that specific site, so that a realistic reaction of the tunnels is produced. Therefore, the Surat zone's response spectra companionable time history was produced initially. The finite element program MIDAS GTS nx has been used to simulate the tunnel-soil system. Analysis reveals forces in RC liners and subsidence in soil-tunnel systems are larger in deep tunnels as compared to shallow tunnels. Even the analysis expresses the actual earthquakes for another site may overvalue or undervalue the response at the target site. The free-field ground motions are affected by the earthquake's maximum response at the ground surface, which has been studied.
