Carbon fibre composites have long been praised for their strength and lightweight properties. However, their sustainability is compromised by energy-intensive manufacturing processes, leading to high costs. To address these challenges, the integration of recycled carbon fibres into composites has emerged as a solution to reduce costs and minimize environmental impact. In this study, we evaluated hybrid panels consisting of one layer of recycled carbon fibres and two layers of virgin carbon fibres, comparing them to panels made solely of virgin carbon fibres. The recycled layer was composed of 70% recycled carbon fibre and 30% epoxy resin by weight. We prepared the specimens by hand layering the recycled and virgin carbon fibres and employed hand mixing for the epoxy-hardener ratios in the hybrid panels. mechanical tests, including tensile, impact resistance, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), were conducted. Initial findings indicated a 30% reduction in mechanical performance of impact compared to panels made solely of virgin carbon fibres. However, the hybrid panels still demonstrated good results in mechanical strength. This research highlights the potential for integrating recycled fibres into composite materials to enhance sustainability without significantly compromising their mechanical properties.

In this study, various experimental campaigns were carried out using a 1 MWth circulating fluidized bed experimental plant constructed at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany to investigate the combustion and co-combustion behaviour of different fuels under steady-state operating and load cycling conditions. Initially, combustion tests were performed with low-calorific Polish lignite and with German lignite as a reference case for co-combustion. In the co-combustion test series, straw pellets and refuse-derived fuel were used as co-fuels with German lignite. In addition, a sophisticated dynamic 1.5-D process simulation model was developed for a 1MW(th) circulating fluidized bed test facility. The model created with the software "APROS" accurately represents both the gas/solids and the water/steam sides of the experimental plant. All the components, comprising the riser and the cyclone, the flue gas path with its heat exchangers, the cooling system, and the control circuits, were modelled based on the real pilot plant specification data. The generated dynamic process simulation model was first validated at various steady-state operating points. Subsequently, a dynamic load increase was simulated, which was followed in a second step by a dynamic load decrease. Numerical results, such as the pressure drop profiles and the temperature profiles along the riser, as well as the concentrations of flue gas at the cyclone exit, were compared with the measurements during the load cycling. The comparative studies show that the generated model accurately represents the most relevant parameters throughout the experimental long-term campaigns.

Lightweight materials are in high demand across several industries that require materials capable of withstanding various loads. One of the most common ways to achieve lightweight materials is through the use of architectural sandwiches that involve printing two skins onto a honeycomb structure. These sandwiches provide a versatile solution for providing specific mechanical and dynamic properties that are suitable for different industrial sectors. The current study focuses on the tensile properties of auxetic and non-auxetic materials made from three different honeycomb structures, namely rectangular, re-entrant, and hexagonal lattice. The study uses a bio-based material consisting of flax fibers and polylactic acid, which is a sustainable and environmentally friendly option. The specimens fabricated using a Raise3DPro2 Plus printer, and various tensile tests performed on honeycomb structures with different relative densities of the unit cell to determine the effect of honeycomb lattices on the tensile properties of the material. The results of the study show that the lattice structure of the honeycomb material significantly affects the structural Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. Additionally, the study includes the development of a numerical model that demonstrates good agreement between the experimental results and numerical predictions. This model can used to predict the tensile properties of honeycomb structures for different relative densities of the unit cell, providing a valuable tool for engineers and designers. Overall, this study findings could apply to various industrial sectors and highlights the potential of using bio-based materials and honeycomb structures for creating lightweight materials with specific mechanical and dynamic properties.

Companies need to improve their processes to reduce the rate of product defects, improve production efficiency and product quality, and reduce production costs to improve their competitiveness in the industry. The study took as an example a Peruvian outsourcing dedicated to serving FTTH (Fiber To The Home) installations for Claro Peru, a subsidiary of America Movil, one of the leading companies in integrated telecommunications services in Latin America through improvement steps. of Six Sigma which is a systematic method of operations management that seeks to improve the capacity of the production process by reducing all waste, which is carried out in accordance with the DMAIC cycle. In the execution of the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control activities, the scope of the implemented actions is summarized as references to control charts, development of procedures and training to guarantee the maintenance of the implemented actions. Percentage increases in productivity were achieved in the order of 27.08%, effectiveness of 11.69% and efficiency of 14.52%.

Automating the driving task fundamentally changes the user's driving experience. The driving function now dictates the driving style, previously a product of individual decisions by the driver. Consequently, understanding what constitutes a comfortable driving style becomes essential for ensuring the optimal design of driving functions. This knowledge can be acquired through user studies. As self-reports are often distorted, physiological data can help provide a more objective insight into the emotions and feelings of the test subjects. Smartwatches serve as a convenient and uncomplicated measuring device in this context. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the accuracy of a smartwatch is sufficient to infer user perceptions and subjective ratings. To achieve this, a subject study is conducted using a driving simulator.

The senior project study aims to monitor Environmental Radioactivity (ERA) within Haqal village, located in a high background radiation area. The research includes measuring radiation levels in air, water, sand, and granite in the village's region using a Geiger counter and other radiation detection apparatus. The collected data was analyzed to ascertain the village's radiation exposure levels. The significance of this research is that it helped identify potential sources of radiation exposure that may have contributed to the village's elevated cancer rate. The study provides decision-makers and public health officials with essential information for developing strategies to reduce radiation exposure and prevent future cases of cancer in the kingdom. We collected various samples from several locations at the village, including residential areas, agricultural fields, and water sources, using chemical separation techniques to analyze their radioactive content in the laboratory [1]. The results of this study contribute substantially to understanding villages worldwide with high incidence rates of cancer and to informing future radiation monitoring and management strategies in comparable communities. The results of one of the granite rocks samples showed specific activity of the Potassium-40, at 1703 Bq/kg, which is five times higher than that found in Qassim, Saudi Arabia for the Potassium-40 [2]. The overall potential sources of the radiation exposure are identified, and the effective prevention strategies are devised, making this study is a crucial step towards enhancing public health outcomes in Saudi Arabia.

Increasing research efforts have been devoted to the development of quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steel, which is considered to be a very promising representative of the third generation of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS). The excellent tensile properties achieved by the novel Q&P treatment make it a potential material to manufacture structural components in automotive industries. In addition to tensile strength and ductility, the formability and fracture properties of Q&P steels shall be thoroughly investigated under different stress states. Therefore, the deformation and fracture properties of a laboratory Q&P steel have been investigated by conducting a comprehensive experimental program and the corresponding finite element simulations. Tensile tests have been performed using flat specimens with different notch configurations to achieve a very wide range of loading conditions. In addition, the deformation and fracture behavior during different experiments have been simulated using finite element methods and damage mechanics approaches. After collecting the critical stress and strain variables from simulation results, a stress state-dependent fracture criterion has been calibrated and validated to characterize the fracture resistance of the Q&P steel in this study.

The use of automated driving and connectivity can be an additional lever to reduce fuel and energy consumption in real driving and has an impact on the drive system and its dimensioning as well. In this paper we are addressing the impact urban cooperative driving on the energy consumption of electric vehicles and investigate further the impact of the drive system and their layout. To this end, a concept study is being conducted for a D-segment vehicle and two battery electric powertrains. In order to evaluate the impact, defined driving profiles from a connected intersection are used for simulation. Based upon the results the overall energetic impact of different intersection approaching strategies as well as the drive system impact are discussed. It showed that a cooperative intersection scenario leads to an energy reduction of 14% and first come first serve scenarios to an energy reduction of 7%.

The modeling of the cutting process is one of the important roads to optimize cutting parameters through computer-aided manufacturing simulations. However, many models, whether analytical, numerical, or geometrical, are plagued by inaccuracies, consistently exhibiting a percentage of errors when compared to experimental tests. This paper investigates and analyzes certain interpretations and observations to illustrate inaccuracies in the existing models for roughness, topography, and cutting forces, specifically in the context of 3-axis ball end milling. An approach is proposed to enhance the accuracy of predicting these models.

The aerodynamic properties of the wind turbine design have a significant impact on the effectiveness of wind energy conversion into electricity. This is a crucial parameter, especially for small-scale wind turbines intended for individual home applications where the effective area of the wind turbine rotor and wind speed are severely constrained. In this research study, the analysis of the energy efficiency of a wind turbine with a horizontal axis of rotation concerning the type of blades and its inclination is carried out. The experimental study focuses on four different blade types developed for wind turbines with rotor diameters up to 2 m. The experimental measurements were carried out on a laboratory test stand. In addition to the design characteristics of the wind turbine, an essential aspect is the velocity of the incoming wind. CFD calculations were performed to explore this topic. The research aimed to verify the effect of the geometry of the confusor and diffuser and their combination on the air velocity incoming to the rotor section. Analyses were investigated for five different lengths of an aerodynamic shield with increasing/decreasing cross-sectional area and for four versions of their combination. It has been found that changing the turbine blade type results in the powers increase up to 32%. The variation of the inclination angle of wind turbine blades results in the changes in the generated power up to 65%. Furthermore, the use of additional components led to an increase in velocity by nearly 21%.
