This work aims to establish assertive inventory policies for the raw materials in a Portuguese bakery. The demand behaviour of some items was analysed, using the ABC classification, and 14 main items were prioritised. Using Holt-Winters' additive method, the demand for these items was forecast until the end of 2023. With these forecast data, the paper presents a simulation and comparison between two different inventory policies, the continuous review model and the periodic review model, and also presents an estimate of current inventory costs. As expected, the periodic review model presented higher inventory costs than the continuous review model, due to the higher safety stocks needed. The results of this paper are a starting point for the company to decide what inventory management method fits better.

To improve the disassembly automation of remanufactured products and solve the blindness problem in the manual disassembly process, this paper proposes a method about remanufactured product defect gear invalidation judgement based on the improved YOLOv5 target detection algorithm combined with image processing technology. Aiming at the background interference problem in the recognition process, Squeeze-and-Excitation Networks (SENet) is added to the detection model of You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) to improve the target detection capability of the model. Then exporting the target detection frame, the redundant background of the target image is eliminated by mask processing, which concentrates subsequent identifications' attention on gear targets. By means of using convex hull detection to judge gear broken teeth defects, and calculating the actual length of cracks by object image coordinate transformation, the method that combines the improved YOLOv5 algorithm model and gear defect recognition realizes gear invalidation judgement. This paper focuses on two parts: identifying gears and gear defects using the YOLOv5 and image processing algorithms. The experiment shows that this method has a good recognition effect on gear broken teeth, and the crack length recognition error does not exceed 1.38%. The whole research improves the rationality and accuracy of gears in the process of remanufacturing and disassembly and provides an effective way for deep disassembly of remanufactured products.

Vehicle sideslip angle has always been of interest for stability controls enhancing vehicle safety. As well-known, measuring sideslip is impractical and expensive, motivating techniques to estimate it using already-available vehicle sensors. This paper proposes a new methodology to estimate sideslip angle, separating kinematic and dynamic sideslip angle contributions with the idea that the former is straightforward and the latter may be obtained with a lateral-acceleration-based interpolation. The proposed approach is validated through experimental data on a passenger vehicle.

Nowadays, decision making is one of the most important and influential aspects of everyday life, and the application of metaheuristics and heuristics facilitates the process. Thus, this paper presents a performance analysis of the combination of constructive heuristics used to generate initial solutions for metaheuristics applied to scheduling problems. Namely, Nawaz, Enscore, and Ham Heuristic (NEH), Palmer Heuristic and Campbell, Dudek, and Smith Heuristic (CDS) with Cuckoo Search, Firefly Algorithm and Simulated Annealing. The aim is to compare the performance of these combinations to analyse the efficiency, effectiveness and robustness of each. All combinations were analysed in an in-depth computational study and then subjected to a statistical study to support an accurate analysis of the results. The results of the analysis show that the Firefly Algorithm associated with NEH, despite having a high runtime, performs better than the other combinations. However, the best effectiveness-efficiency ratio corresponds to SA-Palmer and SA-CDS.

This paper presents the extended study on the performance analysis of a proposed airborne rotor type wind turbine design in flat terrain wind conditions. The innovative design proposal by the inventor was presented in our earlier work. The proposal is based on the airborne structure rotation with blades attached to the airborne zeppelin, thus called an airborne rotor generator. In our previous work, we developed a solid model of the airborne rotor and obtained the power generation potential for 12 m/s standard wind velocity. In this study, we present the extended work and results obtained by applying a Rotating Mesh Method developed in ANSYS/FLUENT at average wind speed conditions of 6, 9 and 12 m/s with rotation velocities of 0.8,1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 rad/s. 12m/s results indicate that the expected power generation potential for the rotor is around 80 kW on average at a rotation speed of 1.4 rad/s. Preliminary results indicate that the airborne zeppelin with sail-type blades may produce powers of around 40 kW at around 300 m altitude.

In the era of Industry 5.0, there is a growing interest in harnessing the potential of human-robot collaboration (HRC) in manufacturing environments. This research paper focuses on the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) to augment HRC capabilities, particularly in addressing configuration issues when programming robots to collaborate with human operators. By harnessing the capabilities of LLMs in combination with a user-friendly augmented reality (AR) interface, the proposed approach empowers human operators to seamlessly collaborate with robots, facilitating smooth and efficient assembly processes. This research introduces the CollabAI an AI assistant for task management and natural communication based on a fine-tuned GPT model focusing on collaborative manufacturing. Real-world experiments conducted in two manufacturing settings coming from the automotive and machinery industries. The findings have implications for various industries seeking to increase productivity and foster a new era of efficient and effective collaboration in manufacturing environments.

This paper describes the experimental assessment of the acoustic performance of a two-story building constructed adjacent to a train station in Barcelona (ES). The building has been isolated at the top of the foundation footings at the ground level. The acoustic performance of the isolation system has been investigated by means of an in-situ measurement campaign at different construction phases. The results of the measurement campaign have been used to validate the Building Base Isolation indicator implemented within the frame of the BIOVIB project.

Laser technology has been used more and more intensively in different areas of application, from cutting materials to medicine. More recently, this technique has also been used for labeling. However, scientific works on this topic are still very scarce. This work aimed to study the best operating parameters in the Laser Marking of Data Matrix Codes (DMCs) in plastic cases used for motorcycle instrument panels. The results showed that the best quality marking was performed using 19 W of laser power, 30 kHz of pulse frequency, 1000 mm/s of displacement speed and 30% of overlap, among a set of parameters studied around the manufacturer's initial recommendations. The quality analysis was performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy technology, seeking to obtain the best possible definition on the PBT-GF30 FR composite material.

In response to the Industry 4.0 trend, the cloud-based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system has made significant contributions to the medical industry. This study proposed a cloud-based monitoring and control system for the Automated Tablet Dispensing and Packaging System (ATDPS) used in clinic pharmacies. It has improved dispensing errors, with the improvement rate of each indicator being more than 40%. It ensures patient medication safety and can remotely manage machine abnormal signals to avoid distracting pharmacists, thus improving their ability to concentrate on identifying the name of the medicine. Ultimately, it shortens the patient's waiting time for medicine, improves patient satisfaction with medical treatment, and enhances medication safety.

As an important part of rail transit, the vibration and noise of bridges have been a hot issue in recent years. The vibration and noise problem of steel-concrete composite bridges is more serious than that of concrete bridges. The vibration characteristics of steel-concrete composite bridges with and without constrained layer damping are studied based on the wave and finite element method and superposition principle. Firstly, based on the wave finite element method, a calculation model of the vibration response of a steel-concrete composite bridge is established, and the calculation results using this method agree well with those obtained by the traditional FEM and the field measurement. The dominant frequency band of the bridge vibration is 63-100 Hz and 500-1000 Hz, and the peak appears at 80 Hz. Secondly, the segment model of the bridge with constrained layer damping is established. The dynamic equation is constructed using the stiffness and mass matrix from the model to solve its response under the wheel-rail force. The constrained layer damping can reduce the vibration acceleration level of steel components by 5-10 dB. The influence of material and thickness of constraining layer on the vibration reduction is analyzed.
