Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS) are a highly effective, dependable, and environmentally friendly method of storing energy. This stored energy can subsequently be deployed during power outages or times of increased demand. Despite their numerous advantages, FESS can be susceptible to various types of malfunctions, such as gear defects, which can have adverse effects on the system's efficiency and overall performance. Therefore, the investigation of vibration monitoring is essential for diagnosing gear faults in the FESS. This paper presents a comprehensive model of the system, consisting primarily of an engine, gear reducer, coupling, and a flywheel. The shafts are supported by electromagnetic bearings (AMBs). Analyzing the temporal and spectral characteristics of the signals provides insights into the vibration levels of each bearing and underscores the significance of the coupling and electromagnetic bearings in the system. A typical gear defect represent a cracked tooth was modeled, and its impact on the performance of our Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) was examined.

The paper discusses possible influencing factors for the successful introduction of an asset management system (AMS). This paper presents a study of certain factors that affect the success of implementing an AMS based solely on secondary research and expert evaluation of the results of the literature review. Based on a systematic literature review and expert evaluation of the findings, 17 potential critical success factors that are essential for the successful implementation of an AMS are proposed. The results of this research suggest that understanding the factors that can facilitate the success of AMS implementation can provide the necessary support to organizations committed to the long-term success and sustainability of their business. Consequently, practitioners can utilize the findings of this study to strengthen the factors required to implement an effective AMS. Furthermore, this work provides a foundation for future research aimed at examining the critical success factors in real business situations.

This study aims to explore various domains within Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and energy productivity in Australian context. In doing this, the study analyses I4.0 technologies & services, barriers to I4.0 for energy productivity, regulatory framework, multiple benefits of I4.0 technologies, relevant business models, and roadmap to I4.0. The findings show that inadequate IT infrastructure, cyber security, complex supply chain and contracting, uncertainty about return on investment (RoI) are significant barriers. When it comes to productivity benefits, this study has highlighted macroeconomic impact, industrial sector impact, public budget impact, health and well-being impact, and energy delivery impact stemming from I4.0 technologies. In terms of regulatory framework, this study finds that given the near-ubiquitous data generation and use across the digital economy, it is quite difficult to exhaustively address all legal and regulatory issues relating to I4.0 technologies in the energy sector. However, there are several business models (e.g. X-as-a-service or pay per X) which can be applied to adopt I4.0 technologies. The study concludes with a roadmap to I4.0 with future research directions.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning (DL), rapidly evolving in both academia and practice, allow for improved manufacturing processes thanks to data analysis. These technologies provide benefits to production systems in several ways by enabling resilience and improving sustainable growth. However, the manufacturing challenges and issues need to be revised according to the new trends provided by remanufacturing, i.e., an emerging and new "mode" of manufacturing able to bring used products to a "like-new" state, potentially profitable and less environmentally harmful compared to the classical manufacturing systems. This research work, methodologically based on a scoping literature review, provides the state-of-the-art related to AI, ML, and DL use in remanufacturing contexts, identifying the main field of applications and their challenges and limitations. The findings revealed an increasing interest in the topic in the last three years. Most of the studies focused on disassembly and inspection processes, whereas further applications (e.g., repair, demand forecasting, cost prediction, etc.) have not been fully investigated and need further research. DL represents the most widely used technique (followed by ML). Even though the literature confirmed that AI-based methods could increase productivity and lower time and costs, further attention needs to be paid to real industrial case study applications.

In this study, aerothermoelastic analysis of a control fin using tightly coupled fluid-thermal-structural interaction method is presented. The fin with freeplay nonlinearity is subjected to Mach 6 hypersonic flow with non-zero angle of attack. A finite volume method-based fluid flow solver is tightly coupled to a Finite element method based structural dynamics solver in the time domain using mapping-based coupling technique. Diffusion function-based smoothing method is used for the CFD grid deformation. The fin is connected to a finite stiffness actuator at the root. The effect of freeplay at the deployable joint is investigated and flow field, structural, and thermal quantities are reported for various freeplay conditions. Obtained results indicate increased instability in the fin oscillations due to an increase in the freeplay at the deployable joint.

Narrow Tilting Vehicles (NTVs) have been proposed as a solution to traffic problems such as congestion and limited parking spaces. However, their small footprint can lead to a reduction in postural stability. To address this issue, NTVs have been designed to reduce the lateral acceleration experienced by occupants by tilting the vehicle body inwards during turns, depending on the driving situation. Three types of tilt control methods have been proposed for NTVs: direct tilt control (DTC), steering tilt control (STC), and combined steering and direct tilt control (SDTC). In this study, we proposed a simplified method to control SDTC using a single roll directional motion equation, focusing on the yaw angular acceleration and roll inertia of the vehicle body. The proposed method was found to result in a 84% reduction in the lateral acceleration experienced by occupants during turning maneuvers in the evaluation of real-vehicle dynamic tests.

Decentralised, modular production with the aim of individualised products leads to a more flexible production setup which, however, also influences the handling of faults and failures. Since faults occur rarely compared to nominal behavior of Cyber-Physical Production Modules (CPPM), it is difficult in common manufacturing environments and even harder in skill-based production to gain experience and knowledge about faults and the context they occur in. Hence, leveraging knowledge and data from multiple CPPM proves beneficial, facilitating the storage of acquired information regarding faults and their context in federated knowledge bases. However, although different approaches tackle the communication between distributed knowledge bases, the use for distributed knowledge-based fault detection and diagnosis in skill-based production environments remains mainly unseen. In this paper the focus lies on the development of a communication scheme that enables automated communication between fault detection and fault diagnosis components for a decentralised control setup to make distributed knowledge about faults accessible. This includes the definition of fault detection and fault diagnosis components and their offered services which encapsulate different forms of knowledge representations. For the communication between the components, a unified model is elaborated, and the required information is identified. An integration in a holonic manufacturing system of SmartFactory(KL) is presented and an outlook for further research is given.

Metrology of geometric quantities is experiencing its development towards Metrology 4.0 or metrology of the future. Coordinate measuring technology, which has replaced classical geometric size metrology in many respects, requires an in-depth analysis of accuracy issues related to the influence of measurement conditions on the reliability of the measurement results obtained. This paper presents an analysis of the selection of a coordinate measuring system for largesize rim and ring type components. These components, although assumed to have low-complexity shapes, are nevertheless characterised by difficulties in adopting a measurement base and coordinate system. The influence of measurement point density and scanning speed on the representation of geometric features for contact and optical measurement systems is presented. An assessment of measurement accuracy by estimating measurement uncertainty is also presented.

In the civil engineering area, structural control technology takes real consideration, especially in recent works and research. However, the active mass damper is a control device used in several cases to suppress undesired structural vibrations caused by winds or earthquakes. Thus, the active device offers the real-time adjustment possibility of structural responses. This paper proposes an active mass damper to mitigate structural vibration caused by ground acceleration. The tested structure is a three-scaled structure excited using the 2003 Boumerdes earthquake excitation. To calculate the desired force of control, a proportional integral derivative algorithm is proposed in a closed loop. The active control is evaluated via numerical simulation results of compared displacement responses of the uncontrolled structure to those of the active-controlled structure. The carried-out results proved the active control strategy's effectiveness in suppressing the excited structures' vibration.

The dynamic behavior of a nonlinear elastic plate on a viscoelastic foundation under the action of a moving oscillating load is studied in the case of the internal resonance accompanied by the external resonance. The damping properties of the viscoelastic foundation are described by the generalized Fuss-Winkler model with the damping term given via the standard linear solid model with the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives. The external load is presented by a linear viscoelastic oscillator governed by the constitutive equation based on the fractional derivative Kelvin-Voigt model. The process of vibrations of such a system is described by a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations of the second order in time with respect to generalized displacements. The method of multiple time scales is used for solving the obtained set of equations in combination with the method of expansion of the fractional derivative in a Taylor series. The assumption of viscosity of the oscillator to be a finite value leads to the solution of the characteristic equation for defining the behavior of complex conjugate roots. Resolving equations for determining the nonlinear amplitudes and phases of force driven vibrations of the plate is obtained. Comparative analysis of the numerical studies is carried out for oscillators with fractional derivatives in damping description for the cases of small and finite viscosity. The influence of the fractional parameters of the environment and the foundation on the amplitudes of nonlinear vibrations is also shown.
