This study presents an experimental parametric analysis that used the design of experiments methodology to evaluate the effect of laser heat treatment parameters on the surface mechanical properties of AISI 4340 steel parts. The research employed a Taguchi design consisting of three factors at three levels: laser power (P), scanning speed (V), and focal distance (DF). This study presents an experimental analysis of the impact of various parameters on the lines generated by the laser during the treatment process. The analysis is based on hardness tests and metallographic observations.

Milling is the fundamental process of the metalworking industry mainly for mould production. The correct choice of milling parameters, tool material and tool coating for machining pre-treated steels for plastic injection moulds improves tool performance and reduces costs. To analyze the tool performance in relation to the chosen parameters, it is necessary to analyze the vibration signals during the machining process, tool wear and the machined surface quality. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the performance of three different coated tools with different designs: one tool coated with Cr-doped TiAlN (4 flutes) and the other two tools coated with TiAlN (5 flutes). The tools performances were evaluated during the milling of pre-hardened mould steel W1.2711 in a dry environment using a cutting speed of 40 m/min and a feed tooth of 10 mm/tooth. Vibration analysis was considered in relation to tool wear. Surface roughness and tool wear in the milling process were considered parameters to measure the tool's performance. Tool wear was analyzed by optical microscopy. The results showed that tool 591 had the best performance in wear, but tool 233 promoted the lower surface roughness due to its special coating.

By virtue of recent development in automated parking system, there has been growing interest in tractor-trailer automated parking application (TTAPA). However, there are two major obstacles when developing TTAPA. The one is low maneuverability of reversing a tractor-trailer vehicle (TTV), caused by hitch angle steering characteristic, and the other is heavy computational cost from non-linearity of model. This paper considers an autonomous parking system (APS) for a TTV. To achieve successful autonomous parking under various circumstances, this system adopts nonlinear model predictive control and LQR as path planner and path tracking controller, respectively. To validate the proposed APS for TTV, the system is implemented and evaluated in MATLAB/Simulink and TruckSim co-simulation environment. From simulation results, it is shown that the proposed APS can achieve parking scenario goal with good performance for a TTV.

Post-earthquake damage survey reports reveal that reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column connections undergo large inelastic deformations during an earthquake and their failure can compromise the overall stability of the reinforced concrete building. This stirred the concern for in-depth understanding of nonlinear behaviour and failure mechanism of such connections. In this paper, nonlinear finite element analysis of RC beam-column connection using concurrent multi-scale framework is performed to investigate the governing failure mechanism in the joint region under monotonic and reverse cyclic loading. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to finalise various modelling parameters like optimal mesh size, dilation angle, viscosity and strain rate. The developed computational model is therefore compared with the available experimental results to examine its efficacy in predicting the structural response. The obtained results advocate the capability of the developed computational model in realistic assessment of the performance of RC beam-column connection and capturing the governing failure mechanism.

Three dimensional additively manufactured metallic materials, i.e., 3D-Metal, are attractive materials. However, the fatigue strength of as-built 3D-metal is nearly half of bulk metals. In order to enhance the fatigue strength of 3D-metal, a combined process of blasting and cavitation peening (CP) was proposed. In the process, the blasting makes smoother surface by collisions of abrasives, and introduces compressive residuals stress in the sub-surface region. After the blasting, CP using a submerged water jet introduces compressive residual stress into the deeper region. In the present paper, titanium alloy Ti6Al4V manufactured by direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) was treated by the combined process of blasting and CP. The fatigue strength was evaluated by torsion fatigue testers of a torsion-controlled type and an angle-controlled type. To make clear the mechanism of the improvement of fatigue strength, surface roughness and surface residual stress were measured. It was revealed that the blasting introduced the compressive residual stress while decreasing the surface roughness, and the fatigue strength was improved by about 33% compared with as-built specimen. When the specimen was treated by CP after blasting, the fatigue strength was improved by 58%, which was larger than that of CP only.

Accidents caused by wheeled mining machines contribute to approximately 30% of injuries and fatalities in the global mining industry. Wheeled mining machines have limited driver assist features when compared to the passenger vehicle market and are typically limited to collision avoidance by braking. These products are often subject to false positive interventions leading to production losses, increased wear, and resistance to adopt the technology by end users. This study proposes a sampling-based method to expand the collision avoidance by braking approach to include steering. The sampling method is based on the vehicle's kinematics and the application of a Gaussian distribution to the steering rate to determine the probability of a collision occurring. Initial results indicate that the inclusion of steering rate on the collision prediction model may increase the operator's situational awareness, leading to fewer false positives.

Many studies have consistently highlighted the influence of printing parameters on the mechanical properties of FDM-printed polymer components as they play a significant role in the mechanical performance of these parts. This paper is focused on experimental investigations using a rotating fatigue testing methodology. In order to determine the effect of 3D printing parameters, including infill pattern, infill density, and pattern orientation, impact the fatigue characteristics of test specimens subjected to rotating bending fatigue tests. This paper outlines the utilization of a design of experiments approach to not only evaluate the significance of these printing parameters and their interactions, but also to establish regression equations giving fatigue life as a function of the 3D printing parameters.

In the manufacturing industry, anomalies are an unfortunate but inevitable reality. If left unaddressed, they can lead to costly production defects and halted production lines. However, with the rise of Industry 4.0, many industrial machines are now equipped with sensors that can be used to detect anomalous behaviors, allowing for early identification and prevention of defects. Therefore, this study presents a solution using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) autoencoder to detect abnormal behavior in an industrial machine temperature sensor dataset. The algorithm is compared with conventional methods, further demonstrating its capabilities in anomaly detection. Additionally, an implementation architecture is proposed using InfluxDB and Telegraf software, providing a simulated real-world application of the proposed solution.

A numerical investigation has been conducted with the aim to study the effect of Re number and jet inlet temperature (Ti) on the heat transfer of submerged impinging jet used to cool high heat flux dissipating components, which are representing electronic components. In order to obtain realistic results all equipment which could affect the flowand heat transfer, such as antenna etc. has been modelled. Hence, in this study 4 pieces of heaters were located under a heat rejection plate, where a 2 x 2 jet arrangement was used in an enclosure. Water was used as coolant fluid. The effects of Re (100-800) and coolant fluid inlet temperature (15 degrees C-45 degrees C) under constant jet-to-plate distance of H = 4 mm on heat transfer was examined numerically. The aim of the study was to show the heat transfer in order to represent the effect of Re number and coolant fluid temperature on submerged impinging water jet heat extraction capacity. It was observed that heat transfer increases with increasing Re number and decreasing fluid inlet temperature. In addition, it was observed that with the increase in Re number the plate temperature decreases with a decreasing rate.

We present a prediction based controller for heterogeneous platoons with actuation delay. By using a prediction of the ego vehicle's acceleration and compensating the ego vehicle's influence on the error dynamics, we obtain a controller that achieves input-to-state stability (ISS) with respect to the preceding vehicle's acceleration. The result is a controller that does not require driveline information of the preceding vehicle, which enables platooning in a heterogeneous setting. An analysis is presented of the string stability properties of the system with both actuation and communication delays. The effectiveness of the controller is shown in simulation.
