Degraded suspension dampers strongly influence vehicle safety and ride comfort, but often occur after several years of operation. Related workshop checks are usually not degradation-adaptive, so they can be significantly delayed to the need for maintenance. To make the maintenance adaptive to degradations, onboard diagnosis methods can be used, which rely on the degradation status extracted from sensor *** support the development of sensitive yet robust diagnosis models, a model that can simulate and explain the effects of damper degradation in common sensor signals is proposed. This paper focuses on low-frequency effects in signals of the wheel speed sensors, which are ultra low cost and always available in modern vehicles. As a result, the model shows a good qualitative match to real-world test drives, specifically in the frequency domain. Therefore, various real-world measurements were conducted, in particular, test bench measurements of degraded dampers and vehicle on-road tests.

This paper presents a novel framework for developing Circular Business Models based on a strategic approach adopted from lean production. Building on existing theory in both the circular economy and the lean production research domain, the framework was developed from the findings of a longitudinal single case study based on a mixed research design of case study and action research. The research was carried out over a three-year period as part of a larger research project that explored the connection between lean thinking and circular economy. The aim of the research was to help close the gap on the integration of lean and green and to guide academics and practitioners who seek to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

The Wire Arc Direct Energy Deposition (WA-DED) process is highly regarded as part of additive manufacturing. Compared to other additive manufacturing processes, it is characterized above all by its high deposition rate and low system costs. Despite many years of experience in the build-up welding process, WA-DED still holds a number of challenges in terms of process stability. This article analyses the interactions in the WA-DED process. To this end, the process was visualized and described with the help of Structured Analysis and Design Technique (SADT). Building on this, a process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) was presented to identify and priorities risks. Finally, the results of the Taguchi tests were analyzed and visualized. The results illustrate the strong interactions between the influencing factors. These have a material-specific effect on the production results. Each new material composition therefore requires a systematic analysis in order to determine quantitative correlations. In future, these can be supported by machine learning approaches.

Understanding how fluids impact wall shear stress (WSS) is vital for various applications, especially in biomedical contexts where WSS may be a contributing factor to vascular diseases. This study evaluates the non-Newtonian lattice Boltzmann model (nN-LBM) implemented with single (BGK) and multiple relaxation time (MRT) collision operators using the Carreau-Yasuda equation. These operators assess WSS distribution in non-Newtonian fluids in a microscale stenosed channel. Comparing the WSS profiles with experimental data and a Navier-Stokes solver confirms the nN-LBM's accuracy. We examined shear-thinning fluids with different xanthan gum concentrations and a Newtonian fluid. Results indicate that non-Newtonian fluids show oscillating wall shear stress more than Newtonian ones under similar conditions. Additionally, we explored the effects of higher Reynolds numbers on WSS. Non-Newtonian fluids display pronounced fluctuations at elevated Reynolds numbers. The stability of the BGK is found to be influenced by the characteristic time scale (lambda) inherent in the Carreau-Yasuda model. This sensitivity prompts the need for implementation of the MRT approach. Adopting a more advanced collision operator and precisely managing physical relaxation moments can enhance stability and computational efficiency. Considering a 0.042% Xanthan-gum fluid, the BGK remains stable for low values of lambda where the viscosity gradient is smaller. However, by increasing this value to reflect more pronounced viscosity gradients, the MRT demonstrates its capability by maintaining robust numerical stability even at considerably higher values.

The selection of an appropriate disc geometry plays a pivotal role in optimizing heat dissipation. This study investigates the substantial influence of the geometry of automotive brake discs on their thermal behavior. Three distinct configurations were rigorously analyzed, namely, standard full rotor (SFR);standard ventilated radial vane rotor with rounded vanes (SRV-R);cross drilled (CD) and a rotor with diamond and teardrop pillars (DTDP) instead of vanes. This research explores the heat generated through friction during the braking process across various designs of disc brake rotors. The results highlight that disc geometry plays a crucial role in the thermal management of the system. The most critical aspect is how much heat is dissipated within the rotor, for different rotor designs. Identifying the design that generates the highest temperature, i.e. lowest heat transfer coefficient, is essential, as it could indicate possible material degradation and brake disc failure risks. These findings provide valuable guidance to the automotive industry in designing more efficient brake discs for improved heat dissipation and performance.

Pore size of scaffolds plays a significant role in tissue regeneration both in vivo and in vitro. Extrusion based 3D printing methods allow the manufacture of scaffolds with unique pore architecture. As far as homogenous pores are concerned, small ones are required for increased mechanical strength, but they have to be large enough for efficient regeneration. This study aims to preliminarily investigate the impact of heterogeneous pore distribution in the scaffold on its mechanical and biological behavior compared to homogenous pores. Scaffolds with 0 degrees/90 degrees architecture, comprising heterogeneous and homogeneous 300-500 mu m pore distribution were 3D printed and then tested in tension and compression. Thereafter, their seeding efficiency was evaluated using a 3D culture of HepG2 cell line. Results confirmed that presence of two different pore sizes in the scaffold results in an advantageous combination of mechanical properties and seeding efficiency compared to homogenous size pores.

Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) is one of the major nuclear applications using neutrons. These neutrons can originate from a variety of sources, such as nuclear reactors, isotopic neutron sources, or neutron generators. The nuclear group at KFUPM has gained extensive experience in the use of fast and thermal neutrons for NAA on a variety of solid and liquid samples, with delayed and prompt gamma rays, over the past 30 + years, using both open-end and portable neutron generators. The measured concentrations ranged from a low of 6 ppm for vanadium to a high of 2.3 wt% for strontium using delayed gamma rays from activated soil samples;and from a low of 24 ppm for boron in water samples to a high of 15.8 wt% for oxygen in bulk samples for prompt gamma rays. The present paper briefly describes the salient features of the NAA setups and some of the measurements and results obtained using them. Brief information is provided while details can be found in the relevant references listed.

This paper aims at identifying the main challenges associated with the adoption of blockchain and smart contract technologies as potential solutions for cybersecurity in an Industrial Internet of Things environment. Initially, an introduction to IIoT, blockchain and smart contracts is made, highlighting their core concepts as well as explaining their characteristics and properties. Subsequently, based on a literature review, the various benefits and challenges for their implementation are identified. The latter are presented through a hierarchical approach that first categorizes them in architecture and privacy related challenges, with each category being further divided into more specific challenges to emphasize the complex nature of the problem. Some typical use cases are also mentioned to showcase the feasibility of these technologies. Finally, a conceptual framework for IIoT cybersecurity is proposed in terms of future work directions.

A novel method for the approximate estimation of curve squeal sound levels is proposed. The method directly targets the stationary regime by using wheel/rail mobilities at contact instead of modal characteristics of the structures. The condensation allows a more general description of the dynamics of the structures, in particular the behavior of the rail for which a modal representation is not very suitable. The method is first validated in the case of a reduced modal description of the system by comparing results to a reference cycle obtained by numerical integration in the time domain. It is then applied to realistic cases for which the wheel/rail mobilities are obtained from more elaborated models. The model can be used to carry out parametric studies allowing to design squeal noise mitigation solutions.

Controlling a vehicle's powerslide motion in the presence of a human driver is a challenging control task, but one that may have a significant impact on vehicle safety, for example, during rapid evasive manoeuvres. Reinforcement Learning, a data-driven optimal control strategy, has gained increasing attention in recent years, demonstrating its effectiveness in successfully controlling various nonlinear systems. In this work, a novel powerslide controller is designed for an all-wheel drive battery electric vehicle with individually driven front and rear axles and a human driver in closed-loop using Reinforcement Learning. The performance of the proposed controller is analysed, and its robustness to steering disturbances and changes in road friction is demonstrated.
