The current study examines the mechanical behavior, specifically focusing on the compressive strength, the bending strength, and the bending modulus of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced with the extract of Salvadora persica (S. persica) and the hydroxyapatite (HA). The elaborated composite was designated for use in dental applications (dental restoration and dental prosthesis). Different percentages of S. persica extract nanoparticles and/or HA microparticles were employed to enhance the antibacterial and the mechanical properties, respectively. Compressive strength, bending strength, and bending modulus were investigated using a universal mechanical testing machine. The main results revealed that the optimum percentage of HA reinforcement was 10%. Additionally, the integration of 10% S. persica extract slightly improved these mechanical properties;however, a 20% concentration reduced them. Regarding the hybrid composite, the addition of fillers generally decreased the mechanical properties. As a consequence, the composition (90% PMMA + 10% S. persica extract) exhibited the best antibacterial activity and mechanical properties.

Saudi Arabia plans to diversify its energy sector by focusing on low-carbon generation and nuclear energy is being explored in this context. Siting Nuclear Power Plants necessitates careful consideration of many factors such as water access, hazard exposure, proximity to anticipated load, and possible co-product generation (e.g., desalination). Existing studies have only explored large light water reactors and identified limited coastal sites as possible due to consequent water requirements. However, small and micro modular reactors could mitigate this issue and open up a larger swath of the country. Here, we consider the added potential for nuclear when considering different sizes of reactors. We perform country-scale geospatial analyses at high resolution, using multiple reactor scales and corresponding criteria following internationally recognized guidelines. We identify viable sites across Saudi Arabia, and we show that decreasing the size of the reactors significantly increase the potential locations of nuclear power plants. We use existing infrastructure density to indicate the most economically promising sites. The power and siting flexibility of smaller reactors makes them good candidates to replace existing power generation infrastructure. This path can help Saudi Arabia develop a successful civilian nuclear program.

With the decreasing cost of LiDAR sensors, sensor setups with multiple LiDARs are becoming available. In such advanced setups with multiple LiDARs the sensor temporal asynchronicity and spatial miscalibration are critical factors for vehicle localization increasing measurement uncertainty. Hence, simple merging of synchronized point clouds as done in some literature can lead to sub-optimal results. To tackle this problem we propose MLIO, a factor graph-based odometry computation algorithm that fuses multiple LiDARs with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and provides an accurate solution mitigating the effect of temporal asynchronisity and spatial miscalibration. The proposed algorithm is validated using a custom dataset. We compare the proposed algorithm with the state-of-the-art LiDAR-only odometry algorithms, such as KISS-ICP, and LiDAR-IMU fusion LIO-SAM and demonstrate its superiority. We were able to achieve up to 40% and 16% increment in positional and orientation accuracy compared to KISS-ICP and 25% increment in positional accuracy compared to LIO-SAM.

Manufacturing process selection (MPS) is the process of identifying the most suitable manufacturing process based on various criteria such as production demands. Rapid selection is particularly crucial when sudden manufacturing chain disruptions occur, such as those caused by a disaster or a pandemic, where there is an urgent need to find new or alternative manufacturing processes. Challenges emerge due to the need for in-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes across various engineering domains, which is difficult to master, and the lack of easily accessible MPS knowledge. To address these challenges, we propose a process selection approach called the Open Manufacturing Process Knowledge Graph (OMPKG). The OMPKG is designed to comprehensively capture interdisciplinary engineering knowledge, while offering flexibility and scalability to handle complex and evolving MPS data and ensuring expression consistency for sharing. The OMPKG can be integrated with a general selection method, called screening and ranking, to determine the appropriate manufacturing process rapidly. In this paper, we describe the development rationale and logic of the OMPKG for specific manufacturing processes, such as casting, molding, and additive manufacturing, and demonstrate its use in a case study of producing respiratory mask facepieces.

Plastic injection molds are assembled manually because of the high variety and low volume operation that require frequent change and comprehensive mold knowledge. The lack of skilled workers and ergonomic problems in the mold assembly requires a certain level of automation to improve the working condition and operating performance. However, the knowledge within mold assembly application is not systematically organized to automate the operation. The use of two non-identical collaborative robots is considered to assist and collaborate with a human worker during the mold assembly operation. Data containing information on components in the collaborative assembly must be collected and represented in a form that can be interpreted and understandable by all resources. Besides, relations of entities within a specific context also must be included to extract correct and useful information for every decision-making step. This study aims to provide a systematic ontology model to acquire and represent knowledge of mold assembly operation with human-robot collaboration implementation that enables expansion, learning, and generalization of created ontologies in future practical applications. A simple trial use of created ontology for positioning parts into regions in the workspace is included. This proposed conceptual context modeling acts as a stepping stone to developing a context-aware system for human-robot collaborative mold assembly operations using multiple cobots.

Seattle Sound Transit's Link Light Rail extension to Northgate runs under the University of Washington (UW) campus in a twin bore tunnel system. The ground vibration produced by the trains is required to meet stringent vibration limits for 24 buildings. Vibration from each train passby is recorded by 40 vibration monitoring units installed in the tunnels. The monitoring units are designed to trigger warning alarms in case the train vibration levels approach the vibration limits and exceedance alarms if the limits are exceeded. These limits are based on building vibration limits with vibration adjustments based on field testing. Based on the frequency and location of the monitors, the warning alarm settings needed to be adjusted to minimize false alarms from background vibration. This paper presents the design of the monitoring system, the progression of the warning alarm setting adjustments, and the preliminary vibration trends from representative monitors.

Given the growing concern for social sustainability, companies have adopted practices to address stakeholders' pressures and take responsibility for their suppliers. Although the social dimension of sustainability generates interest in academic and industrial communities, most published papers focus their research on emerging economies. This paper aims to address the degree of implementation of social sustainability practices - basic and advanced - in companies located in Portugal. The development of a survey allowed the collection of 142 answers. The findings show that both basic and advanced practices have a reduced level of implementation in the Portuguese industrial context. Regarding basic social sustainability practices, Portuguese industries should stimulate collaboration with their suppliers. At the level of advanced sustainability practices, there is a need to improve the involvement of NGOs and community groups in supply chains. Furthermore, the Kruskal-Wallis test shows that the companies' size influences the implementation level of social sustainability practices.

The recent Industry 4.0 paradigm is disruptively changing the manufacturing landscape. Where fully automated settings are not feasible or economically viable, Industrial Internet of Things sensors are gaining traction due to their flexibility and affordable costs. In such a scenario emerges crescent attention to digitizing the human factor. Based on this, this manuscript proposes an integrated digital architecture in which a radio-frequency-based indoor positioning system is adopted to anonymously tag human operators. The highly unbalanced spatio-temporal dataset is fed into a recurrent neural network architecture that classifies without overfitting the manual picking/deposit activities in products' stocking areas of a real and low standardized manufacturing job shop with a performance of 0.93.

In this study, we examine the small and large strain tensile properties of the PC/ABS blend through experimental analysis and the application of predictive analytical models. Our investigation includes an investigation of the effects of temperature and strain rate on the tensile response, with strain rates ranging from 1.25 10(-4) s(-1) to 1.25 10(-1) s(-1) and temperatures ranging from 20 degrees C to 120 degrees C. The experimental findings prove that the tensile behavior of the material blend is sensitive to both strain rate and temperature. As temperature increases, the yield strength and strain of the material blend decrease significantly, while the modulus experiences a slight decrease. Following an analysis of material parameters using various constitutive models such as G'Sell and Jonas, and DSGZ, a phenomenological model named the DSGZ modified model by "Zhu et al." was selected to characterize the tensile behavior of PC/ABS. In comparison with other models, the "Zhu et al." model demonstrates a higher level of accuracy. The proposed model exhibits proficient capability in simulating and predicting tensile behavior across various strain rates. However, regarding the influence of temperature, the predicted responses notably deviate from the experimental data.

With changes in consumer habits, online shopping has become an integral part of routine life. However, transactions with online or physical shops still need to be completed through the delivery of physical goods to consumers. Planning transportation for physical goods involves the vehicle routing problem (VRP). Minimizing the number of dispatched vehicles, optimizing travel distances, and ensuring on-time deliveries contribute directly to improvements in customer satisfaction, energy use, and carbon emissions. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues are now a global concern, and transportation planning outcomes can affect a company's ESG performance. Heuristic methods are commonly employed to solve VRPs, and cluster analysis plays a particularly crucial role in this process. In this study, the applicability of three cluster analysis methods-minimum spanning tree (MST), K-means clustering, and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN)-for various VRPs was explored. A method for adjusting k-means cluster sizes was developed and verified to outperform MST and DBSCAN, particularly for vehicle fleets with heterogeneous capacities. The developed method achieved distance costs over 15% lower than the other tested algorithms.
