The primary procedures performed in maxillofacial surgery are osteotomy and repositioning. Surgeons usually exploit 3D printed guides and splints which entail considerable production time and high costs. To address these issues, innovative technologies such as mixed reality (MR) are emerging, but accuracy must still be assessed. Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are categorised into two main types: optical and video see-through. Recognisable comparisons between HoloLoens 2 (optical see-through) and Varjo XR3 (video see-through) are still not available in the scientific literature. This paper compares the accuracy of simulating maxillofacial surgery through these two different headsets. For the evaluation, a 3D model of a skull was 3D printed using Color Material Jetting 3D printing technology. Six people tested the MR application by i) tracing lines and holes with a pen following the holograms displayed on the phantom's anatomy for osteotomies, ii) moving the maxillary fragmented bone according to the projected hologram for repositioning. Times were recorded during the trial. The tested geometries were then 3D scanned to reconstruct the traced cutting lines and holes, and quantitative results were extracted in CloudCompare by comparing the drawn and nominal lines. For the repositioning, deviations have been computed to calculate the mean deviation from the planned displacement. The accuracy of the two HMDs resulted similar for the osteotomy, while Varjo XR3 proved to be preferable for the repositioning.

Decision Support Systems (DSS) can help factory workers in the decision-making step of multiple tasks. In digital factories, these systems make use of data towards a human-centered manufacturing. Rolling of large and thick plates into cans is a common practice in the metal forming industry to fabricate pipes or tanks. The process is adjusted by trial and error with a high level of operator intervention. Furthermore, only a small number of cans are identical. The objective of this work is to prescribe, by means of a DSS, the process parameters to be applied by the operator in the machine to optimize the can fabrication. The development of the DSS involved several steps, including firstly signal preprocessing and classification and then data extraction, aggregation, and regression in a multi-stage prediction framework. A significant use of domain knowledge for a data-centric solution contributes to the quality of the recommendations and the ability to organize and transfer know-how among operators.

Despite the significant surge in innovation and the ongoing trend of increasing automation levels in manufacturing and logistics brought along by Industry 4.0, companies continue to heavily depend on human labor to meet market demands for product customization and reduced time-to-market. Consequently, there is a pressing need for companies to enhance workforce skills within a shorter timeframe, leading to an increased demand for new training methodologies aimed at accelerating knowledge acquisition at a high-quality level. As the Industry 5.0 paradigm emerges, there is a renewed emphasis on human-centricity, encouraging collaboration between humans and machines to address new challenges in industrial environments. Extended Reality (XR) technologies offer a promising solution to bridge the gap between operators' needs and industrial requirements, enabling operators in navigating complex indoor spaces efficiently and safely, optimizing operational workflows and enhancing overall productivity. This research explores the application of XR technologies in indoor navigation, a crucial aspect of modern industrial environments. Two distinct approaches are introduced and compared: AR-Tablet-based and MR-HoloLens-based. Through a real industrial case study focused on indoor navigation in a spare part warehouse, technical insights are gathered to inform effective implementation strategies in logistics settings.

Inconel 718, one of the most employed nickel-based superalloys, proved to be efficiently processable through Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), including Cold Metal Transfer Technology (CMT). Nevertheless, a multi-step heat treatment is still necessary to control the microstructure and the mechanical properties of this complex alloy. This work aimed to compare the effects on microstructure, tensile properties, Vickers microhardness and chemical composition of two heat treatments performed on Inconel 718 parts produced through CMT, namely: i) the heat treatment used for conventionally processed Inconel 718 parts, defined by the AMS5662 and AMS5663 standards;ii) a custom heat treatment that reduces the number of steps included in the previous case. The experiments were performed on prismatic CMT-produced parts, subsequently machined to extract the test specimens, considering both the aforementioned heat treatment conditions as well as the as-deposited material. The results suggested that comparable results were achieved for the selected heat treatments, however, a complete recrystallization of the fine grains never occurred for all the investigated conditions, thus retaining the typical microstructural anisotropy deriving from the CMT process. Moreover, the heat-treated parts showed, in any case, comparable properties to those of the conventionally cast alloy, opening a new scenario in the context of industrial production of semi-finished parts with huge costs and time savings.

The use of full-metal sandwich structures in transportation industry represents a promising way to address key challenges such as weight reduction, improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and use of more sustainable materials. This research evaluates the possibility of replacing common marine sandwich structures with aluminium honeycomb sandwich structures (AHS) with equal flexural stiffness. As aluminium is a versatile, environmentally friendly and recyclable material, AHS structures are one of the most promising solutions. Quasi-static perforation (QS) and low-velocity impact (LVI) tests carried out with a conical indenter and allowed the crashworthiness assessment of the analysed materials. The crashworthiness of the structureswas evaluated by calculating the total energy absorption (TEA) and specific energy absorption (SEA). Comparisons were performed between the energy absorption capacity of AHS and conventional sandwich structures (GFRP-PVC and GFRP-balsa). The results of the research activity show that aluminium sandwich structures are valid alternatives, in terms of energy absorption properties, to the composite structures currently used in the transport industry.

Lightweight structures with a high stiffness-to-weight ratio are crucial for reducing aerospace weight. Lattice infilled structures have proven superior to conventional ones, offering better stiffness, strength, and lower weight. Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the production of these complex lattice structures, overcoming traditional manufacturing challenges. Composite materials, known for their exceptional properties, especially in different environmental and flight conditions, are increasingly replacing metallic parts. Combining metallic lattice structures with composite skins offers an optimal solution for aircraft wing design, improving performance and reducing weight. This study assesses the feasibility of metallic and hybrid (metal-composite) lattice infilled wing for a drone compared to traditional spar-rib design using finite element analysis. A comprehensive design framework for AM was developed using nTop tool. Iterative simulations were conducted to find the optimal type and size of lattice unit cells under level flight loading conditions. The process involved Python coding for iterative simulations, resulting in significant weight reduction, lower stress, and reduced wing tip deflection for lattice structures. A comparative study also examined the replacement of metallic skins with composite skins for further weight reduction and enhanced performance. The findings highlight the potential of innovative lightweight hybrid wing designs for aerospace applications.

The digital modeling and optimization of production processes in the aerospace sector are crucial endeavor for enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness. This paper presents the process optimization strategy of an aerospace production line by adopting the discrete event simulation technique. The 3DExperience platform has been chosen as a promising co-simulation tool for the digital model development. The production processes have been digitally modeled, and process flows have been analyzed for achieving a comprehensive line flow balancing optimization identifying critical bottlenecks. Various scenarios have been analyzed and compared enhancing process operational efficiency. Initial results outline significant imbalances in the utilization of workstations, suggesting a lack of efficiency in resource allocation. The simulation phase has demonstrated that strategic line balancing can mitigate the issues, leading to more balanced workloads among the stations.

Serious games and telerehabilitation are increasingly significant in the recovery process of neurological patients, and personalization and adaptivity in difficulty levels according to patients' abilities are crucial characteristics. This paper describes a solution for managing the settings of a multiple-serious games platform (N-RehLab) for patients with neurological disorders, avoiding the specific configuration of each serious game separately. To this end, a serious game named Assessment Serious Game (ASG) has been developed. Its outcome is a unique index, with a value between 0 and 1, which assesses the patients' capabilities based on parameters measured with a Leap Motion device. Using this index, the N-RehLab recommends a personalized rehabilitation program to medical personnel, specifying which serious games and the relative levels of difficulty the patient should engage with. A discussion on the developed solution is presented and improvements are identified to move towards clinical experimentation.

When pattern of fits are not designed following the boundary condition design criterion, the rejection rate due to failure in assemblability need to be considered. Since in a pattern of fits it is not possible to define an assembly equation it is not trivial to create a tolerance stack-up. The paper proposes a strategy to achieve a generalized rejection rate computation for nx patterns based on an interpolation model derived from Monte Carlo simulations. The rejection rate as function of the number of element in the pattern is simulated for different size and location tolerances. An exponential convergent function is fitted to the data and a generalize regression model is used to estimate the function parameters. Validation of the proposed methodology is provided. Moreover, future development are outlined.

Additive manufacturing via selective laser sintering (SLS) makes it possible to create parts by fusing successive layers of powdered material, forming surfaces with significant dimensional inaccuracies and shape deviations. To improve the accuracy of products made using SLS, the objectives were to identify the primary components of the shape formation error that arises during the layered building and to describe the influence of the main factors on them analytically. A structural mathematical model has been developed to describe the formation of part dimensions obtained by layered building. Compensation for the relative dimensional error of products caused by shrinkage is done by applying a technological transformation (non-proportional scaling along the X, Y, and Z axes, considering the specified functions) of the triangulated 3D model at the stage preceding materialization. As a result of the analysis of the structural model of part dimension formation, a parametric model has been developed that considers the product's dimensional states, the transition between which is influenced by the primary shape formation errors and parameters of technological preparation of triangulated models. The sufficiently high adequacy of the obtained model for the Vanguard HS Si2 system has been experimentally confirmed. As a result, it was possible to improve shape formation accuracy by applying preliminary technological transformation.
