Stormwater pipes are a very important part of urban infrastructure. The designs are usually carried out to accommodate a stormwater flow due to 10-year ARI rainfalls. In such designs, historic long-term local climate/rainfall data were used to estimate stormwater volumes. Due to recent climate change, the rainfall events have increased in intensity, resulting in exceeding the capacity of stormwater pipe network. This is a new challenge for engineers sizing stormwater management devices for a design life of 100 years. This paper looks at the new design value amplifiers introduced in New Zealand to accommodate various future climate change scenarios. As a case study, a small (26 ha) new housing development in Auckland (New Zealand) is looked at, to ascertain the effect of having individual or common rainwater storage tanks, in reducing the flood peaks. It is shown that rather than increasing the stormwater sewer pipe sizes at a higher cost, providing the rainwater tanks on a cost recovery basis is an option the city council can investigate.

This paper presents a model-based safety software that performs Hazard Identification (HI) for Plug&Produce (P&P) systems automatically. P&P systems, inspired by Plug&Play in computers, aim to integrate devices and tools into the manufacturing system with minimum integration efforts and costs. When plugging a new resource, it will exchange all the required information with the manufacturing system and be ready to operate within minutes rather than days or weeks. One of the challenges that face this concept is performing proper risk assessment after each change in the system. Therefore, the risk assessment needs to be automated as much as possible. This paper is about automating one risk assessment step: Hazard Identification. A new safety model is designed to identify hazards. The presented software analyses this model by implementing a novel algorithm that uses lookup tables to cover various possible hazardswhen resources work together. This software will support the risk reduction team by drastically reducing the time needed for HI and being ready for the next steps in risk analyses. Automating identifying hazards is an essential step towards automating the entire risk assessment process and achieving safe P&P systems.

In the complex field of nuclear reactor design and analysis, there is a continuous need for sophisticated computational models that can accurately capture the diverse and challenging thermal hydraulic phenomena during steady state and transient conditions. This research sets the stage for the development of a comprehensive system analysis code for nuclear reactor thermal hydraulic design, starting with a fully implicit isentropic two-fluid model with four governing equations. The computational methodology for this model incorporated the Advection Upstream Splitting Method (AUSM) scheme with a staggered grid arrangement. The nonlinear system of governing equations was solved implicitly by employing Newton's method while a numerical Jacobian matrix was calculated for the derivative terms, enhancing the stability and efficiency of the solution process. The performance of the model was assessed using three classical two-phase benchmark problems: water faucet problem, oscillating manometer problem, and air-water phase separation problem. The validation results indicate a reliable and accurate prediction of the model. Consequently, the successful development and validation of current two-fluid isentropic model provide a solid foundation for the future development of a comprehensive nuclear system analysis code based on the two-fluid model.

The modeling of mechanical systems with manufacturing errors is a necessary task for engineers in order to predict the realistic functioning of a product during the design stage. Several tolerancing methods are proposed considering several defects such as dimensional and geometrical deviations. However, form defects are not considered or modeled using complex theoretical and mathematical models. In this paper, CAD-based methods are proposed for the modeling of planar parts with flatness defect. The Gaussian Perturbation Method is used to deter-mine random positions of points of a toleranced face considering the flatness tolerance zone value. Two CAD methods based on the use of the Scan To3D tool capabilities and the B-spline interpolation are presented for the final reconstruction of realistic faces with defect. Several algorithms are presented to update the initial coincident mates between planar parts with form tolerance.

Accelerated Mean Sea level rise has a significant impact on the shape of the future coastline. For example, increasing hydrodynamic loads (higher water levels and waves) on the coast promote the erosion of beaches, dunes and cliffs. Increasing costs for coastal protection and interventions in the ecosystem are among the most severe consequences. Coastal protection dunes of the Baltic Sea prevent landward flooding and the recession of the coastline due to extreme water levels and swells (e.g. during storm surges). However, the required resilience of these structures depends not only on the height of the water levels, but also on their temporal course (duration, abundance). The presented, recently started ResCAD research project (Resistance and Climate Adaptation in Dune Systems) aims to develop two stand-alone planning tools for relevant authorities: a stochastic storm surge generator and a statistical dune erosion model. The comparative analysis from (Hydro-morphodynamic numerical model (HMN-model), site-specific observation data and the storm surge generator enables the description of the erosion volume by an empirical-statistical dune erosion model. This can be used, among other things, for planning construction measures to preserve the dunes and ecological habitats (e.g. by sand nourishment). In consultation with the relevant state authorities, more reliable estimates of the event-related and long-term development of the coastal protection dunes can be derived in this way.

Helically coiled tubes have been widely used as heat exchange equipment. Therefore, the heat transfer mechanism inside the helically coiled tube was studied under two boundary conditions of uniform wall temperature and uniform heat flux. The contribution of velocity and velocity gradient to heat transfer was explored using the heat flux convection transfer equation. The study revealed that heat transfer at the outer side of the helically coiled tube was enhanced by secondary flow, while heat transfer at the inner side was weakened, resulting in local heat exchange performance inferior to that of a straight tube of the same size. Under uniform wall temperature boundary conditions, the combined effect of velocity and velocity gradient enhanced heat transfer inside the helically coiled tube, whereas under uniform heat flux boundary conditions, the velocity gradient has a greater contribution to heat flux transfer inside the tube.

In recent years, the diversification and individuation of market demand are becoming more and more obvious, which puts forward higher requirements for the flexibility of the manufacturing system. For cyber-physical systems, flexibility refers to the ability to be scalable and reconfigurable. The traditional industrial reconfiguration method is inefficient and lacks practical deployment, it can no longer achieve the flexibility required in practical manufacturing processes. To address these problems, this paper proposes a reconfiguration solution based on an optimization algorithm and the OPC UA discovery mechanism. The optimization algorithm is used to fast generate the optimal combination of system resources for minimizing the makespan. OPC UA discovery enables the plug-and-produce functionality that can accelerate new device integration. The proposed solution can provide decision-making support for the rapid reconfiguration of the manufacturing system and also allow for the dynamic integration of newly inserted devices into the manufacturing system. Finally, the feasibility of the solution is verified by a demonstration of reconfiguration in robotic manufacturing systems.

Current shape optimization methods bring crucial gains with respect to the functions to be optimized. They are widely used by industry, especially in the automotive sector such as the PSA Group. Among these approaches, geometry optimization is limited to a relatively small design volume coupled with functional, weight, and manufacturing cost requirements. In this paper, we aim to reconstruct a CAD model of an automotive steering wheel that is parameterized from a functional surface that meets imposed loading and displacement conditions. We propose an approach to identify the forbidden zones of the design space and manage them in a topological optimization loop. This is to optimize an industrial assembly process that adjusts the aerodynamic drag coefficient of a vehicle. Thus, criteria for weight, stress, plastic strain, and flow uniformity during the injection of a polymer component are selected for decision-making. This innovative method transfers the geometry from a constraint and input factor to an output response to optimize materials, geometries, and manufacturing processes. As a result, a weight reduction of 22.73% is achieved, coupled with a 58.9% improvement in strength and a 66% reduction in induced plastic strain under service loading.

The Brazilian territorial extension made it difficult to structure a reverse chain to deal with issues related to Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This is due to government requirements for the management of this waste by electronics manufacturers and importers. To compete with external competitors, companies need to use the circular economy, which further increases the complexity of the project. Thus, this research identified that the industries in this sector have difficulties in organizing themselves for the reverse logistics operation of electrical and electronic equipment. The objective of this study is to propose a structure for the reverse chain in the management of electronic waste in Brazil. The methodology used was a semi-structured interview with open questions with specialists in WEEE reverse logistics. As a result, the construction of a conceptual model for the reverse logistics of WEEE with the promotion of the Circular Economy. As a limitation, as it uses a semi-structured interview with specialists, it uses an exploratory approach and, therefore, cannot generalize the results.

Stress peening is a modern technique to enhance the durability of spring. The springs are shot peened under prestress, and after unloading, the residual stress will increase significantly. The same procedure can also be done by deep rolling. The difference is that deep rolling has two different residual stress directions (amounts) if you look along or perpendicular to the rolling track. Therefore, you get in sum four totally different residual stress distributions if you take into consideration that the prestress (before rolling) is along or perpendicular to the track. The residual stress distributions in the dependence of the above-explained facts, and different prestresses are investigated. The different depths of the interaction zones are shown. Also, the limit of the theoretical inducible residual stresses is compared with the experimental results. Last, but not least, a practical application of a torsion bar is presented.
