One of the cornerstones of Lean manufacturing, according to academic research, is the 5S+1, which introduces quality in manufacturing. This study aims to demonstrate how computer-based vision and object detection algorithms, can assist in the implementation of safety as 6th S in 5S+1 by monitoring and identifying employees who disregard accepted safety procedures, like wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The research evaluated the performance indicators of a detection technique and reviewed and analyzed it. To confirmworkers' PPE compliance, the suggested model used the You-Only-Look-Once (YOLO v7) architecture. A deep learning technique was subsequently applied to confirm the safety helmets and safety vests. This strategy is determined to be the most effective when using the VGG-16 algorithm, achieving an 80% F1 score and processing 11.79 frames per second (FPS), making it ideal for real-time detection.

The research objective is focused on developing artificial neural network (ANN) based approach to estimate optimal cutting forces based on various input parameters during machining processes for the enhancement of tool life and machining efficiency. The literature review explores the existing techniques and methodologies adopted for cutting force prediction. In this paper, experimental data are gathered from a lathe machine, incorporating diverse cutting parameters (such as depth of cut, feed rate, and cutting speed) that have significant impact on cutting forces. The collected data is then pre-processed to remove any inconsistencies or outliers, ensuring the quality and integrity of the dataset. The ANN model is constructed using a feedforward architecture, comprising multiple hidden layers with different activation functions. The model is trained using a backpropagation algorithm, optimizing the weights and biases to minimize the difference between predicted and actual cutting forces. Performance metrics such as mean squared error and mean absolute error are employed to evaluate the accuracy of the model. Extensive experiments and simulations are conducted to validate the developed model. The results demonstrate that the ANN-based approach exhibits high accuracy in predicting cutting forces. The model effectively captures the complex relationships between input parameters and cutting forces, enabling optimization of machining processes and tool selection. The developed predictive models provide valuable insights for process planning, control, and optimization. In conclusion, this project highlights the potential of ANNs in predicting cutting forces. The developed models offer a promising solution for optimizing machining processes, leading to improved manufacturing efficiency.

Industry 5.0 is the inclusion of humans in the production line. This is because human is now considered a prerequisite for any industry to enhance production performances. However, most of the technological enablers still do not consider the human factor in the production system and only a few articles expose the impact of human-centric approaches and digitalization on production performance. Therefore, this study applied a questionnaire-based survey approach to map out the level of digitalization and human-centric in companies of different sizes and identify the impact on production flexibility and throughput performances on the production systems. The survey was conducted using Google Forms. One of the key findings is the level of digitalization should go hand in hand with human centricity. Both the production performances of product throughput and process flexibility have an S-shape tendency where a high level of human-centric can have a positive impact on both production performances. Respondents from different sizes of enterprises in different regions of the world and job nature can have a different perception of both the degree of human-centric and digitalization. Companies should consider different human roles like managers and engineers in the human-centric framework to enhance human-centric in a more holistic approach.

The constant development of industry has led to the fourth industrial revolution. This revolution has organized production processes induced by innovations linked to the Internet of Things and digital technologies. Newtechnologies such as advanced robotics, big data and analytics, artificial intelligence and digital twins have been successfully used in large companies. But their integration in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) requires demonstrating their real impact on the SME performance. This paper focuses on the development of the digital twin as a tool to increase the company performance. Indeed, for SMEs, the virtual replication of the manufacturing system serves as a decision aided system and contributes to test scenarios of improvement before investing in new technologies. This paper presents concepts and methodologies to exploit in the elaboration of the digital twin to optimize manufacturing processes of SMEs. All real time generated data are managed in the optimization process and sensors or connected objects contribute to data acquisition. Optimization models and artificial intelligence techniques are used to define the actual manufacturing organization, to analyze it and to elaborate the adapted scenarios in the virtual world. An example of the digital twin development has been presented.

The automotive industry deals with complex processes. Becoming aware of the importance of agile management they are contributing to a creative fusion known as "leagile". However, this concept needs further study and investigation. This work presents a systematic literature review on Lean Agile implementation in the automotive industry. Thirty-three publications were reviewed and characterized according to the year of publication, country of origin, industrial sector, used tools and their contributions to the automotive sector. The results show that 50% of the articles were published after 2018. The countries with the most publications are India, Portugal, and United Kingdom. The most cited tools are Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Just in Time (JIT) and 5S (23%). This study confirms the growing use of "leagile" in the automotive industry and the growing potential for research development in the area.

Numerical techniques are required to understand the details of the flow that are infeasible or difficult for experimental techniques. The boundary element method is an advantageous technique to model interfacial dynamics problems due to its boundary-only discretization feature. In this study, isogeometric boundary element formulation is proposed to model the evolution of the interface of a droplet in 2D confined flows with a variable viscosity ratio. To reduce the computational cost while maintaining high accuracy, low spatial resolutions are used. However, simply reducing the resolution leads to non-physical results such as violating the incompressibility condition which becomes a severe problem for specific viscosity ratios. In this work, stabilization algorithms are developed to address the numerical artifacts at low resolutions. The volume correction algorithm is employed to avoid the drift in the volume of fluid enclosed in the droplet. Mesh relaxation technique is utilized to preserve the mesh quality for a range of Capillary numbers. The proposed method that is systematically integrating these algorithms offers a unified way to model the dynamics of droplets with accurate geometry representation with a compressed meshing procedure at low spatial resolutions.

Ethylene is an important mixed product of natural gas and oil, as it has small molecules and a simple gas-phase mechanism that can be extended to large-molecule fuels. In our experimental studies, the radiative intensity of laminar co-flow ethylene flames was measured under air combustion conditions in the infrared wavelength range 2.5-5 mu m. These combustion experiments were repeated several times using a burner with and without a covering of insulating material (silica aerogel). The radiative intensity of the flame was measured over the entire laminar flame height (5-9 cm). The flow rates (phi) of pure ethylene considered in this work were 140, 160, 180, and 194 mL/min. Based on the measured radiative intensities, the CO2 volume fraction and temperature distributions in the flames were investigated using particle swarm optimisation (PSO) modelling. The two-dimensional temperature distributions and CO2 volume fractions of the flames (194 mL/min) were also modelled using the CoFlame code for comparison. As the flow rate of ethylene increased, the radiative intensity of CO2 also increased, and the peak values of the CO2 intensity were in the range 4200-4350 nm. The errors for the results calculated with PSO were less than 1% for the volume fractions of CO2 studied here. As the flame temperature decreased with increasing flame height, the radiative intensity of CO2 also decreased. This study enables a fundamental understanding of the structural effects of a pure ethylene flame with a gas volume fraction of CO2 in non-premixed air combustion systems.

Annealing, a crucial heat treatment process in the glass manufacturing industry, aims to alleviate the residual thermal stresses induced during the rapid cooling of glass following the forming stage. In the production of container glass, continuous annealing furnaces are employed for this process, consisting of distinct zones tailored to meet specific process requirements. The initial segment of the furnace, the upstream heating zone, is responsible for raising the glassware's temperature to the annealing point. After the heating zone, multiple cooling zones gradually lower the temperature of the glass objects under precise control. To enhance convective cooling rates and ensure uniform air temperatures within the furnace, circulation fans are typically installed in the cooling zones. This study focuses on numerically investigating the influence of circulation airflow rates on the cooling performance within an industrial scale continuous container glass annealing furnace. Two separate solvers are employed in an iterative approach. One solver addresses transient heat conduction within the glass bottles, utilizing radiative and convective heat fluxes as boundary conditions. The other solver is focused on solving the steady convection pattern inside the furnace. Results showed that increasing the circulation fan flow rate enhances the convective heat transfer inside the zone and increases the cooling rate of moving glass bottles. Moreover, increasing the fan flow rate also resulted in a more uniform cooling behavior in glass indicating reduction in the residual thermal stress levels.

Amorphous alloys with no crystal structure, particularly Fe-based ones, exhibit excellent soft magnetic properties and are expected to be applied to motor cores because of their high magnetic flux density. However, they are difficult to machine because of their mechanical properties, such as high strength and toughness, owing to their unique structure. These mechanical properties of amorphous alloys change due to thermal microstructural changes, that is, structural relaxation and crystallization;however, the excellent magnetic properties also degrade. Therefore, this study proposes a new blanking method that improves the machinability of amorphous alloys without degrading their magnetic properties by thermally changing the microstructure of the local area where blanking is performed. This study investigated the effectiveness of ultrashort pulsed lasers, which have little thermal effect, on the local heat treatment of amorphous alloys. Furthermore, blanking tests were performed on the locally heat-treated amorphous alloys, and the blanking resistance values and characteristics of the blanked surfaces were evaluated.

Inconel 718, widely used in the production of parts for the aeronautical and aerospace industries is considered a difficult-to-machine alloy due to its high hardness, tendency to harden by cold work, and low thermal conductivity at high temperatures. Among the machining processes, milling is the most used owing to its simplicity, flexible and ability to generates parts with a high surface-quality finishing. Coated tools have been used to successfully improve the milling performance of Ni alloys. Thus, the wear behavior of endmill coated tools were evaluated, as well as the influence of machining parameters, such as cutting speed and cutting length, in themilling of Inconel 718, using multi-layered TiN/TiAlN coating, deposited by a novel sputtering deposition technique, HiPIMS - high power impulse magnetron sputtering process. For this, the roughness of the machined surface, the wear of the tool and the wear mechanisms presented were analyzed. Itwas verified that increasing the parameters, the surface roughness and flank wear also increased. The predominant wear mechanisms observed were abrasion and material adhesion. Furthermore, it was observed that the presence of the multilayer coating enabled greater resistance to the formation of cracks due to the presence of the TiN layer. There is a gap in the literature regarding the milling and finishing operations of Inconel 718. As this alloy has low machinability, the study of machining process optimization is of great industrial interest. The conclusions of this work can serve as a basis for the optimization of the machining process of this alloy.
