This paper presents a novel human-centered collaborative driving scheme using model-free reinforcement learning (RL) approach. The human-machine cooperation is achieved in both decision-making and steering control levels to improve driving safety while leaving space for human freedom as much as possible. A Markov decision process is firstly derived from the collaborative driving problem, then a RL agent is developed and trained to cooperatively control the vehicle steering under the guidance of a heuristic reward function. Twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) is conducted to attain the optimal control policy. In addition, two extended algorithms with distinct agent action definitions and training patterns are also devised. The effectiveness of the RL-based copilot system is finally validated in an obstacle avoidance scenario by simulation experiments. Driving performance and training efficiency of different RL agents are measured and compared to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA) is one of the most common Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) functions on the market, yet it is still not well accepted by drivers. Although LKA can reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents by correcting the vehicle heading in the event of an unintentional lane departure, poor usability often results in manual deactivation of the function. We provide considerations on how to specify LKA functions in general and propose admittance control as a solution to improve the state-of-the-art from the widely used concept of torque overlay, which is limited by a trade-off between automated and manual driving modes. Using the proposed LKA function, unintentional lane departure is prevented while maintaining comfortable reaction torque which allows the driver to easily steer the vehicle.

The proposed system is based on a Double-Pipe Heat Exchanger (DPHX)-based Latent Heat Storage Units (LHSUs) that uses Phase Change Material (PCM), whereas the incoming water conditions play a primary role in the charging and discharging of the storage system. In this particular application, it is also crucial to emphasize that enhancing storage capabilities heavily relies on addressing the low thermal performances exhibited by most PCMs. Consequently, materials that boost thermal conductivity, like porous metal foams (specifically, aluminum foam with 20 PPIs and 0.88 porosity), geometry modifications, and dispersion of nano-sized powders (specifically, MWCNT-0.04) into paraffin (specifically, RT82), have been utilized in PCM-based energy storage systems to improve their performances. The predictive model for PCM melting/ solidification has been built up with references to the enthalpy-porosity approach. The research outcomes have been consolidated to encompass aspects such as the liquid phase ratio, temperature variations, energy storage/harvesting rates, and dimensionless factors across different altered Stefan numbers. These modified Stefan numbers represent diverse incoming water conditions, serving as input parameters for assessing the thermal performance metrics, including melting/solidification durations and stored/released energy quantities. Also, the addition of both techniques in the DPHX reduces melting/solidification time and increases the rate of energy storage/harvesting when compared to DPHX with pure PCM. Finally, it is shown that the average storage/harvesting heat rate for DPHX with nanoparticles and metal foams is higher than Pure PCM while the average storage/harvesting heat rate for HTF with a higher Ste number, say different water flow conditions.

An impact of a bubble induced by a submerged pulsed laser is utilized for improvement of fatigue strength of metallic materials. As the bubble induced by the pulsed laser behaves like a cavitation bubble, the laser induced bubble is called as "laser cavitation". The mechanical surface treatment using the laser cavitation impact is named as "laser cavitation peening". At laser cavitation peening, the impact induced by laser cavitation collapse strongly depends on the bubble geometry. There are two typical mode at the bubble collapse. One mode is "microjet mode", at which bubble develops near the target and is collapsed with generating a microjet in the bubble. The other mode is "hemispherical mode", at which a hemispherical bubble develops on the target surface and is collapsed on the surface. As the bubble collapse of microjet mode is interesting phenomenon, a lot of researchers investigate "microjet mode". However, impact induced by "hemispherical mode" is significantly larger than that of "microjet mode". In the present paper, to optimize laser cavitation peening condition, a fluid/material coupled numerical simulation of a bubble collapse near a wall was carried out changing with standoff distance from wall. It was revealed that the equivalent stress induced by hemispherical mode was larger than that of microjet mode.

One of the methods used today to improve processes in companies is Six Sigma. Within the application of this philosophy, machine learning methods are increasingly employed to analyse established procedures. In this article, the aim is to examine the present status of the use of supervised machine learning methods in the management of production process optimisation projects based on the Six Sigma approach. The analysis is presented based on a relevant literature review of applied/proposed machine learning methods in Six Sigma implementation. The work carried out included a literature review based on a search of significant databases on the issues presented. The research methodology was carried out in the following phases: 1) Identifying data sources and keywords combination;2) Determining the term;3) Searching the relevant websites;4) Evaluating the review and summarizing the results of the searches carried out in the databases Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science between 2017 and 2022. Keywords and their possible combinations were defined for each machine learning method in combination with the term "Six Sigma." As a result of the research, MLs used in Six Sigma projects have been identified and linked to several areas of industrial substitution. The analyses produce identified targets suitable for regression and classification methods.

The effect of a first order exothermic chemical reaction on the mixed flow in a vertical channel filled by a bidisperse porous medium was studied. The dimensionless governing ordinary differential equations have been solved numerically. It is found that dual solutions exist for both velocity and temperature. Graphical results showing profiles of temperature and velocities as well as the existence domain of the dual solutions are included.

Most of the alluvial channels have bedform formations that develop over time and place due to changes in flow characteristics and surrounding environments. They have a big impact on the river's flow and sediment transport. Bed load and suspended load movement in alluvial streams lead to the production of bedforms and they vary geometrically in size and shape. Several experiments and studies have been conducted to get an insight into the relationship between fluid hydrodynamics and bedform dynamics. The impact of 3-D bedform shape on turbulent flow and sediment transport is still being investigated in different scenarios. With a comprehensive review, this work seeks to give extensive information and essential aspects of the bedform of turbulent flow across alluvial bedforms. The current research focuses on five particular topics and explores various features of bedforms and research possibilities such as hydrodynamics and the emergence of low-angle dunes, dune three-dimensionality, and its influence on the fluid dynamics, superimposition of bedforms, and the impact of suspended sediment on the dune flow field and morphology and the effect of downward seepage on the bed morphology and flow dynamics.

The flood forecasting framework links to weather, hydrologic and hydraulic models. The weather forecast errors that are due to errors associated with observation, initial conditions, and model uncertainties can be addressed by deploying ensemble weather forecasts and post-processing techniques. On a global level, in order to increase the prediction of high-impact weather, at a lead time of 114 days, under the World Meteorological Organization, TIGGE facilitates access to medium-range forecasts from various centers across the globe. However, the observed data for extreme rainfall remains limited due to the low frequency of occurrence, which makes the post-processing of the ensemble forecasts difficult. Therefore, in this study, the predictive performance of raw ensemble forecast in the short term is examined for the flood-prone Adyar River basin that comprises the highly urbanized Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. An existing hydrologic model is set up and calibrated for the entire basin for generating runoff response for a predicted rainfall, while a hydraulic model is used for the CMA for simulating the resulting flood. In this regard, a state-of-the-art local-inertial hydraulic model that runs on a course numerical grid, while still capturing the small urban features using sub-grids is employed to simulate the complex flood pattern in the highly urbanized CMA. The computationally efficient and reliable hydraulic model successfully simulates flood scenarios for all the ensemble members and eventually, flood hazard probability maps are generated for short-term forecasts. The obtained flood hazard maps are then compared with those the observed rainfall to realize the performance of raw ensemble forecasts in flood hazard mapping. The study shows that TIGGE ensemble forecasts can be utilized for predicting flood inundation in Chennai City with a reasonable lead time for issuing early warnings.

The increasing number of Industry 4.0 services adds further complexity to software, enabling more control loops throughout the production system. To address the organizational and technological challenges under uncertain production conditions, this paper proposes a holistic framework for production planning. It consists of a software-oriented planning architecture and an iterative planning behavior that enables continuous adjustments based on the current state of the production system and products. Principles of organizational, multi-stage production planning and technological, zero-defect manufacturing are considered in combination. Necessary engineering services can be extended by automatically integrating self-describing software services into production system-wide engineering control loops. In a first implementation step, general functionality can be demonstrated by continuous production plan and process-program generation and adaptation with simulative validation for individually configurable products based on the production system state and target goals. The gap between organizational and technological planning is further closed.
