The accelerated shift towards electrification in the tracked vehicle industry, particularly concerning off-road and military vehicles, poses challenges due to their intensive power consumption and limited charging infrastructures. Addressing these challenges, this paper focuses on the development of an adaptive state-tuned power management system for a series hybrid electric tracked vehicle. The vehicle's architecture includes an electric traction unit and a hybrid powerpack. The core of this research involves designing a dynamic power allocation system that adjusts the power sharing between the battery and a generator set under varying operational conditions. Through a systematic approach, a power management algorithm featuring a hierarchical controller structure to manage the power flow is designed. Simulation tests, both Driver-in-the-Loop (DIL) and Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), were employed to verify the system's performance. Results indicate that the algorithm coordinates power distribution, ensuring optimal performance while adhering to the system's constraints and adapting to immediate power demands, demonstrating its potential for enhancing hybrid vehicle operations in demanding maneuvers.

Product remanufacturing and other End-of-Life (EOL) approaches still remain topical issues in research and policymaking. As observed in the literature, global challenges such as climate change and the subsequent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have contributed to driving this interest. While electric and hybrid vehicles are expected to rise in the vehicle market, electric vehicle batteries remain of interest as they typically account for 30-40% of the value of an electric vehicle. While this is a growing the concern, the end-of-life use of these products remains a concern. Remanufacturing, which prepares end-of-use products and their components for use through a controlled industrial process, bringing it to "as good as new". Thus, remanufacturing can be a suggested end-of-life approach for the electric vehicle battery as well as the remanufacturable components in the electric vehicle. While existing studies show consumer knowledge of environmental issues, there are no studies that assess the environmental knowledge of consumers. This scoping review asks the question: from existing research, what are the environmental considerations and end-of-life approaches considered in consumer uptake of electric vehicles? While the broad focus is on electric vehicles, we narrow this interest to electric vehicle batteries for the reasons of component value. A PRISMA scoping review is conducted, and from this, various relevant themes necessary to investigate consumer acceptance and preferences for electric vehicle battery remanufacturing are identified.

The paper presents many study cases on the effect of shear viscosity on the deformation and jet formation posterior to the impact of copper powder onto copper substrates. Thanks to a physics-based plasticity model dedicated to high strain rates processes, we performed a batch of numerical finite element simulations in order to understand the way copper particle flatten and expulse material outside the zone of contact. We considered a continuous function of viscosity as a first shot followed by other cases where temperature thresholds are considered to enable the action of shear viscosity. In the present paper we are not aiming to compare numerical results to experimental data rather than depicting the influence and the importance of physical parameters such as shear viscosity on the development of jetting in impacted copper.

The paper introduces a method for online detection of root-cause machine and bottleneck identification in manufacturing systems, aiming to enhance reliability and productivity. The study addresses the interconnected nature of manufacturing systems, emphasizing the impact of equipment faults on overall performance of the line. Existing fault propagation methods are discussed, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach considering the entire production process. The proposed root-cause algorithm utilizes a digital shadow concept, analyzing machine states and historical data to identify the primary source of faults. The study focuses on machine workstates, distinguishing between internal and external causes, thus determining the root-cause machine affecting the entire line. A Gantt chart-based approach considers the relative timing of events, enhancing accuracy in root-cause determination. Bottleneck detection methods are presented, including analysis of active periods and an arrow method based on machine blockages and starvations. The study showcases a cloud-based system, LogiX, for real-time data processing and visualization, integrating Industry 4.0 principles. A case study evaluates the proposed methods using an 8-h shift period in a bottle filling&packaging line. Root-cause analysis achieved an 89.23% detection efficiency, demonstrating practical applicability. Bottleneck detection methods, both active period analysis and the arrow method, identified the Labeller as the potential bottleneck. In conclusion, the paper provides a valuable contribution to manufacturing system optimization, offering a systematic on-line approach to root-cause identification and bottleneck detection. The proposed methods exhibit promising results, with potential applications in enhancing overall equipment effectiveness and production efficiency.

Metallisation is the process of applying a metallic coating on the surface of a non-metallic component for structural, functional, or decorative purposes. It can be used to replace metallic parts with metallic-coated polymers with the objective of weight and cost reduction, or to extend the field of application of polymeric components granting them thermal or electrical conductivity. For example, it is used in aerospace applications to provide conductivity as protection against lighting strikes. Cold Spray was demonstrated to be suitable for the deposition of metallic coatings on polymer-based substrates without any prior surface treatment. It can be considered as an environmentally friendly alternative for the traditional electroplating metallisation practices and thermal spray coatings technologies as it is a non-combustion process and any unadhered powder residues can be easily disposed of while the metallisation via Cold Spray of thermoplastic polymers was reported by various authors in the last few years, the coating of thermosetting presents additional challenges that have yet to be fully resolved. In this work, a low-pressure Cold Spray system with a maximum pressure of 6 bar was employed to investigate the challenges associated with the metallisation of an epoxy resin.

A computational thermo-fluid dynamic analysis was performed to predict the thermal performance of a three-wheeler electric vehicle (EV) battery pack with thermal interface material. The simulations were performed using OpenFOAM, an open-source finite volume CFD toolbox. A computational domain with twenty Lithium titanate cells, arranged in a four-by-five configuration with appropriate initial and boundary conditions was considered. Three cases were considered, without interface material, with silica gel as the interface material, and with low-density thermal gap filler TC5515 manufactured by DOWSIL as the interface material. The heat generated by the batteries was modeled with the help of a constant single resistance model, considering the battery pack was under a constant current discharge, at a rate of 2C. The temperature distribution in the battery pack with and without interface materials under natural convection was predicted. From the simulations results it is observed that the use of interface materials improved the cooling effect, and reduced the peak temperature. The studies done on the proposed battery pack could lead to the design and development of a lightweight and compact battery pack involving a passive battery thermal management system for three-wheeler EVs.

High levels of vibration and noise usually arise when a railway vehicle negotiates a tight curve. The rolling noise radiated by the vibration of the wheel and rail is generally greater than on straight track. Although models of rolling noise on straight track are well established, much less attention has been given to curved track. The present study introduces a computationally efficient time-domain simulation model that is applied to curved track. To model the track a moving Green's function approach is used but for the wheel, due to its low damping, the impulse response is quite long so a state-space approach is preferred. The current study introduces a novel combination of these two approaches. Additionally, the presence of steady lateral creepage during curving introduces a cross term between the vertical and lateral dynamics in the wheel/rail contact. Moreover, coupling between the two rails through the sleepers and between the two wheels through the axle are considered. The study indicates a significant influence of the lateral contact position and the effect of the steady creepage on the rolling noise in a curve. The inclusion of the coupling between the two sides of the wheel-rail system modifies the results at low frequency.

Global warming and air pollution are the main factors influencing international, national, and local strategies for the transition towards clean technologies to reduce polluting and climate-altering emissions. A further reduction of the latter can be achieved, with the same powertrain technology, by reducing vehicle consumption. One technique is to lighten the vehicle. The goal of this feasibility study is to act on the battery thermal management system to achieve vehicle lightweighting. Specifically, a sedan car with active-cooled batteries was considered as a reference case, and primary lightweighting was achieved through the use of passive cooling methods, i.e., air and Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling systems, followed by secondary lightweighting to re-establish the target range of the reference vehicle by downsizing the batteries. The air-cooled system leads to greater lightweighting, but its field of application is limited to vehicles operating in fleets;this obstacle can be overcome by using a PCM.

Multiphase flow systems, usually a flow system involving multiple phases, have been for decades a phenomenon of particular interest to researchers and scientists globally. This is due to the extensive application of such systems in the physical, chemical, biomedical, and petrochemical industries. In the nuclear power industry, accurate prediction of transient phenomenon occurring in the reactor core, primary and secondary loops involving two-phase flows is paramount for safety analysis and control. The safety system analysis codes used employ the two-fluid model which treats the thermal hydraulic properties of each fluid separately and couples both systems by the introduction of interfacial transfer terms. Understanding of interfacial structures and deducing the interfacial area concentration leads to accurate modeling of the interfacial terms. Since bubbles play a significant role in a two-phase flowthermal-hydraulics properties, the effects of bubble formation and growth on flow properties or system performance cannot be overemphasized. This work therefore introduces an algorithm for detecting bubbles in a two-phase flow using a multiple-layered approach to detect bubbles in layers based on pixel intensity stemming from their relative distance away from the capturing source. Parameters from the detected bubbles serve as the bedrock for the deduction of other secondary parameters needed to accurately deduce the interfacial area concentration and hence the interfacial transfer terms.
