Injection molding is one of the most widely used processes for production of plastic parts. It allows manufacturing of products of various shapes and sizes with high efficiency and production rates. However, setting up process parameters for manufacturing high-quality items and no in-process variation is often a tricky task, which is usually solved using the trial-and-error method and the experience of injection molding machine operators. Such an approach has several disadvantages, as it requires a significant amount of time, also it might lead to production of scrap. An intelligent monitoring and control system for thermoplastics injection molding can be implemented to avoid this. The article presents a conceptual framework for development of such system using a systems engineering (SE) approach. The system would allow the collection, storage and analysis of injection molding process data in order to predict the quality of produced parts without the need for the application of the trial-and-error method. Machine Learning methods are proposed to be a part of the computational core. The article lists stakeholders' needs relevant for the system, defines the problem at hand, introduces what needs to be done and what has been done to find a relevant solution. Lack of use of the SE during design and development of similar systems might lead to creation of a system that is not workable, lacks required functionality or parts of it fail to work together.

With the increase in operating speed, aerodynamic noise become the technical bottleneck restricting the development of the high-speed railway. This paper reviews the research on the aerodynamic noise of high-speed trains from the perspectives of prediction, mechanism analysis and noise control methods. In terms of prediction methods, the research on the aerodynamic noise of high-speed trains is mainly based on static and dynamic trains, and the wind tunnel test and the field tests are the typical corresponding experimental methods, respectively. Based on the flow-filed simulation, the FW-H equation, the APE equation, and other calculation methods are mainly applied to predict the far and near field noise accurately in simulation. The regions with severe flow separation, such as bogies and pantographs, etc., are identified as the primary noise sources. In terms of mechanism analysis, unsteady flow statistics are helpful in identifying sound sources empirically. Furthermore, the sound source term based on the aerodynamic noise calculation methods can theoretically characterize the sound source characteristics. The reduced-order method, coherence analysis and other statistical analysis methods are applied to clarify the relationship between the flow field. The aerodynamic noise can be optimized by passive control methods, such as the bogie cavity fairing, and active control methods, such as the airflow jet. The noise control methods can be further optimized combined with parametric modeling, genetic algorithm and other methods, which deserve more attention.

In the context of industrial production, the cutting problem exists in many technical disciplines. A two-dimensional stock cutting problem (2DCSP) aims to minimize the scrap that are cut from a set of rectangular stocks. Due to its NP-hard nature, the research is structured in four parts as: Rule-based approach (Part I), AI-based approach (Part II), Hybrid approach considering rule-based, AI-based, and brute force approaches (Part III), and comparison of efficiency and effectiveness of the approaches (Part IV). As being the first part of the comprehensive research, this paper aims to introduce the industrial applications of the problem and basics of the approaches in concern. A rule-based approach is applied to solve a 2DCSP for Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The promising component placement results are discussed in terms of practical application and directions for future studies are provided.

Tunisia is a very important producer of phosphate, which is mainly used in the chemical industries. However, the extraction and processing of phosphate generates a significant amount of waste. Their accumulation can lead to adverse effects on human health, biodiversity, and aquatic ecosystems. The Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG) is a Tunisian company specializing in the exploitation and production of phosphate. It operates mainly in the mining region of Gafsa-Metlaoui. Our work is located in the mining region of Metlaoui which is located in the southwest of Tunisia, Governate of Gafsa. The discharge of Metlaoui phosphate waste after sludge treatment is a major environmental problem. To limit this industrial pollution, it is essential to find valuable materials in this waste, which forms a complex mixture. The objective of this work is to perform physicochemical research on ore waste, sludge from Metlaoui phosphate laundries, as well as looking for main materials used in the manufacture of cement and plasters.

Wheel/rail rolling noise is considered to be one of the most important sources of railway noise, even for high-speed railways. In order to accurately predict wheel-rail noise, representative prediction program has been developed and applied. The authors have also developed a wheel/rail rolling noise prediction program, taking more account of characteristics of high-speed slab railway tracks, having sufficient computational efficiency to handle engineering problems. This paper introduces the calculation methods, operation mechanism and characteristics of this program. Typical results are given and compared with measurement.

In creation of three-dimensional shapes, such as tray packages, from plastic film with thermoforming process, the operation of the forming tool and the heating arrangement play a key role. The previous research information related to the monitoring of thermoforming of plastic film materials needs to be supplemented to enable more sophisticated process evaluation. During the commissioning of the new mould tool, its operation was ensured by monitoring the work cycle with a thermal camera and by making dimensional measurements for the end-products. In trial runs, tray packages were produced from two sample materials: monolayer PET-film and multilayer PP-film. Operation of mould design from the processing perspective, reproducibility of shapes and thickness distribution were observed as part of the package quality evaluation. The objective of the study was to understand the operation of the manufacturing process and the behaviour of the formed material more comprehensively by monitoring the system features related to heating. Respectively, utilization possibilities of the thermal camera were studied in terms of production speed increase. The versatile measurement data obtained with the properly adjusted thermal camera monitoring setup proved to be useful for adjusting the thermoforming process and in the evaluation of the forming tool operation.

Heat is the world's largest energy end use, accounting for almost half of global energy consumption in 2021. For most major industrial heat applications, nuclear energy is the only credible non-carbon option. One attractive use for nuclear generated heat is desalination because the process requires lower-temperature heat than other industrial processes. As such, heat from light water reactors is suitable for desalination. The NDP-400 (Nuclear Desalination Plant) is a small advanced integral reactor that produces 400MWof thermal power at a system pressure of 15 bar. The reactor's coolant temperature is below 200 degrees C, which is relatively low compared with those of conventional pressurized water reactors (PWRs) for heat production. The NDP-400 offers economic benefits through system simplification-it has compact printed circuit heat exchangers, a reduced component size, and a lightweight design made possible by the low system pressure. Many of the main components and reactor core of the NDP-400 have been proven in the development of Korea's SMART. The fuel cycle is 36 months, and the core power peaks and power distributions are comparable to conventional PWRs. Safety features include a multi-loop system, gravity-driven safety injection system, and low system pressure. These features maximize the inherent safety of the NDP-400.

The design of rotating systems presents a formidable challenge due to the multitude of conflicting design considerations that must be addressed. In this investigation, the design of an automotive turbocharger functioning as a rotor system is conceptualized using the finite element method and framed as a non-linearly constrained optimization dilemma. The objective function is articulated as the total mass of the system. The constraint functions, which are imperative for compliance, are devised to mitigate vibration magnitude, confine bending stress within the shaft, and maintain the stability of the rotor system. To tackle this intricate difficulty, a new Hybrid DEJA algorithm is introduced, leveraging the fusion of Differential Evolution (DE) and Jaya (JA) methodologies. The JA framework is combined with a mutation operator into DE algorithm, to extend both exploration and exploitation throughout search process. Additionally, the crossover probability is stochastically generated for each iteration to sustain population diversity. A notable advantage of the proposed Hybrid DEJA lies in its freedom from specific control parameters. Furthermore, numerical findings underscore the superior performance of DEJA in terms of solution precision and computational efficiency compared to conventional DE and JA algorithms.

Modern cooling system design is challenging because of increasingly stringent requirements, such as high compactness, reduced cost, and limited space envelopes. Providing a subcooled boiling flow in thermally highly loaded regions became popular compared to pure single-phase convection as it significantly enhances the heat transfer rate. Though nucleate boiling increases the cooling effect, the subsequent film boiling decreases the heat transfer drastically. Therefore, it is essential to understand the boiling characteristics of a given cooling system. Experimental investigations for boiling are highly challenging, and numerical simulations provide a comparably more straightforward and fast solution. In the present work, a semi-mechanistic wall boiling model implemented in Ansys Fluent software captures the complex phenomena associated with the two-phase flow heat transfer. Heat transfer augmentation at the wall is modeled by empirical correlations proposed by Chen et al. The semi-mechanistic boiling model is implemented within the single momentum mixture multiphase model. The wall heat flux is partitioned according to Kutateladze following an asymptotic power law. Nucleate boiling heat flux contribution is modeled following Foster and Zuber. The new implementation is validated using data from experiments of water flowing over a heated plate in a channel. A sensitivity study is conducted for the different controlling parameters for the semi-mechanistic boiling model, such as superposition constant, evaporation frequency, and optimum settings captured. A mesh sensitivity study is also conducted. The numerical results show a reasonable match with the experimental with a maximum error of about 10% for a few data points at high temperatures.

The study of an automated system for intralogistics requires an important use of time and resources, starting from the input data analysis up to the definition of the technical solution. While many commercial tools are available for testing and optimizing the plant performance during the advanced design stages, little work has been done concerning the workflow to be followed at the pre-sales design phase. In this context, the present paper focuses on the definition of the best practices for the correct preliminary definition of a robotic cell for palletization. To simplify and speed up the pre-sales feasibility study and estimate the performance of the proposed robotic system, an engineering approach based on a simplified theoretical model is reported and integrated within a dynamic calculation table. As the main output, the proposed tool calculates the robot saturation which is a key index for the plant preliminary definition.
