Automating regulations is difficult because they were not drafted for computers. This article suggests decision analysis good practices to structure, analyze and support regulation drafting, namely: structuring rules using a means-ends objectives network, identifying the level at which rules should be set, developing performance measures for each fundamental objective, setting compliance thresholds based on the respective upper-level objectives and trade-offs, and monitoring and adapting rules. The approach is illustrated and validated through its theoretical application to Portuguese rights to light regulation. It proposes specific performance-based metrics on three fundamental objectives from this regulation: direct sunlight;natural daylight;and solar energy. Climate-based daylight simulation methods coupled with Building Information Modeling (BIM) provide the breakthrough to develop better performance-based metrics, rules, and building design optimization.

Disassembly, a key step in remanufacturing, is almost always performed manually due to uncertainties associated with end-of-life products. In some cases, such as EV battery disassembly, the operator could be exposed to safety hazards. Teleoperation is an effective solution to this safety issue. This paper proposes a teleoperated disassembly system that integrates augmented reality (AR) and digital twin technology. The system establishes bidirectional human-in-the-loop communication between the physical system (the teleoperated robot) and the virtual model. Using AR, the system can provide real-time robot status information to the operator by superimposing a virtual robot on the physical robot and displaying relevant data either in the form of text or a line chart. Furthermore, the proposed approach allows operators to enter the control loop when anomalies are detected, enabling them to receive real-time feedback while remotely controlling the robot. Experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of the system in monitoring robot status during complex disassembly and offering a more intuitive approach for remotely controlling the robot, thereby improving the safety and efficiency of disassembly operations.

In this work, a pressure-driven, fully developed flow of electrolyte liquid through an asymmetrically charged contraction-expansion slit microchannel is investigated numerically to understand the electro-viscous effects. A finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the governing equations, such as Poisson's, Nernst-Planck, and Navier-Stokes equations, to obtain the flow fields, i.e., total electrical potential, ion concentration, induced electric field strength, velocity and pressure fields for 3 <= K <= 9, 4 <= S-t <= 16, and 0 <= S-r(= S-b/S-t) <= 2. Results show that the electroviscous correction factor (i.e., ratio of apparent to physical viscosity) increases maximally by 20.78% with overall charge-asymmetry (0 <= S-r <= 2) at K = 3 and S-t = 16.

The bulge test is an experimental technique used in materials science and engineering research to determine the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of thin films or membranes subjected to biaxial stress conditions. It involves subjecting the film to a controlled pressure, which causes it to bulge outward. In this present work, commercially available polyethylene high density (PEHD) films were used for characterization under uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions. The films underwent initial characterization through tensile testing along both the longitudinal direction (MD) and the transverse direction (TD) through tensile testing. Subsequently, they were further characterized using the bulge test. The contrast between the uniaxial and biaxial behavior of the film has highlighted the shortcomings of relying solely on uniaxial tests to evaluate the mechanical properties of the films under realistic operating conditions.

The primary energy transformation in a nuclear power plant involves converting the energy of fission fragments and particles into thermal energy. The temperature of the reactor coolant, typically maintained between 300-400 degrees C, limits efficiency to around 30-35%. The average fission neutrons' energy is approximately 2.0 MeV or 1.55 * 1010 K, is moderated toward 50 meV or 600 K. This study explores the potential of using diamond as both a neutron moderator and an energy converter in direct energy conversion (DEC) devices within nuclear reactors. By incorporating specific dopant isotopes into a diamond pn junction, these devices can withstand the challenging conditions present in nuclear reactors while maintaining excellent neutron moderation capabilities. Geometric considerations indicate positioning DEC devices optimally within the reactor for efficient energy collection. The reactor type and size of DEC device also play roles in maximizing energy harvesting efficiency. While primary charged fission particles cannot be harvested due to their limited range (approximate to 80% of fission energy), uncharged neutrons and gamma photons and their secondary charged particles, can be harvested effectively. Isotopes used as diamond dopants shows that boron-11 or nitrogen-14 to be neutronically compatible in both neutron moderation and low absorption. Diamond p-n junctions proposed as suitable configurations for DEC devices within nuclear reactors due to their high thermal and radiation tolerance. Graphite can serve as conductors for these devices. This research introduces a new direct energy conversion mechanism for part of the nuclear power which may also function as reactor monitoring tools. Further experimentation and testing on research are due.

Shimmy dynamics of a dual wheel nose landing gear system with torsional freeplay under stochastic lateral disturbances is studied. Dynamic characteristics of the deterministic case are numerically analyzed, especially the shimmy of the landing gear through bifurcation analysis. Meanwhile, the influences of the freeplay nonlinearity on shimmy behaviours are examined in detail. Impacts of stochastic lateral disturbances on the shimmy of the landing gear system are performed via time history and recurrence plots. Our results show that the interaction between the freeplay nonlinearity and the random load induces a significant reduction in the critical shimmy velocity, which has an adverse impact on the stability of the nose landing gear of an aircraft.

Estuaries are transitional zones between the river and the marine environment and one of the most productive ecosystems in the world because they are home to a wide variety of species. The estuarian environment is very complex due to the influence of waves, tides, river flow and human interventions. The tidal wave propagation from oceans to coasts and estuaries are modified by shallow water friction, basin topography and river discharge. The fresh water discharge and the tidal characteristics are the external forcing factors that affect the estuarian dynamics. Dams prevent water scarcity in non-monsoon periods, but the seasonal flow patterns are severely impacted. Especially the frequency and characteristics of floods on the downstream side get affected. The river discharge reduces the tidal motion by damping and dissipating the energy. So, the hydrodynamic conditions of a particular site are often affected by variation in fresh water input into the estuary and the tidal amplitude variation at the river mouth. For the proper functioning of the estuary, the freshwater inflow is very much essential. In this study, the impact on the Narmada River estuary due to discharge reduction by Sardar Sarovar Dam is investigated using TELEMAC-2D numerical model and extent of tidal intrusion for various discharge rates and tidal conditions along with tidal propagation characteristics in the Narmada estuary is evaluated.

The automotive industry is one of the most competitive branches of industry worldwide, due to its demand for a better product. The concept of quality and conformity is extremely important to get an edge over other competitors in the market, while continuous improvement is one of the keys to adapting and improving in an industry where costs are as important as innovation for new and better products. This paper presents a new End-of-Line (EOL) method developed to enhance the quality control of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. The new method is based on Hysteresis Current loop with two primary settings (open and closed). Through the analysis of the hysteresis current loop, the new method identifies the existence of non-conformities that affect the mechanical functionality of the EGR valves. The method recently implemented at the company involved in this study is having a significant impact on improving its quality control at an irrelevant appraisal cost.

Small submersible drainage pumps discharge leaking water and rainwater in buildings. In an emergency (e.g., heavy rain or accident), monitoring the flow rate in advance is necessary to enable optimal operation, considering the point where the pump operates abnormally when the water level increases rapidly. The final goal of this study is to develop an energy-saving, high-efficiency submersible drainage pump capable of responding to emergencies. In particular, this paper targeted a submersible drainage pump model used in the field. Before the development of driving mode-related technology capable of emergency response, we first tried to find a way to improve the performance characteristics of the existing submersible drainage pump. Rather than designing a new pump, we disassembled the current pump and reverse engineering. Then, numerical simulation was performed to analyze the flow characteristics and efficiency of the pump. Then, experimental measurements validated numerical results for the reliability of the pump. Results revealed that changing the cross-sectional shape of the impeller reduced the power and increased efficiency.

Creeks are complex dynamic systems that serve as a transition zone between terrestrial and marine environments. Thane creek, located adjacent to the cities of Mumbai and Thane at latitude 19.0374 degrees N, longitude 72.9815 degrees E, in the state of Maharashtra, India, is connected to Arabian sea through a wide tidal inlet. The morphological changes occurs as a result of erosion of sediments, subsequent sediment transport and deposition over the Thane creek, which hosts two major ports of India, the Mumbai Port Trust and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. In the present study, a comprehensive hydro-morphodynamic model is applied to simulate complex hydrodynamic and morphodynamics in Thane creek. The bed evolution model relies on a complete description of the flow field through two-way coupling with the flow module. The sediment transport rates are calculated, change in bed levels are predicted and subsequently predicted bed level change is fed back to the hydrodynamic module. The sediment analysis of Thane creek suggests the presence of both silt and clay, hence in addition to the total sediment transport model, a mud transport module is also integrated with the bed evolution model. The importance of mud transport module integration with the bed evolution model in this hydro-morphodynamic set up is evaluated through statistical approaches. The results indicates that the velocity range near Thane creek during neap to neap condition is about 0.15-1.1 m/s. The bed level changes near Thane creek is found to be 0.05-0.15 m/ N-N cycle which is validated with the field measurements.
