When a sheet metal is subjected to both tensile and compressive stresses in a forming process, there is a need to formulate a yield stress function that can accurately account for its strength differential effect in anisotropic yielding. The earliest classical approach is to combine Hill's 1948 quadratic yield stress function with Prager's kinematic hardening concept. Consistent with the requirement that a polynomial stress function admits only even-order shear stress components for an orthotropic sheet metal, the resulting quadratic yield stress function in plane stress has up to five material parameters for on-axis yielding but only one material parameter for off-axis yielding. The latter feature limits its modeling capabilities in general sheet metal forming simulations. In this paper, we present a user-friendly approach of formulating a non-quadratic yield stress function with tension-compression asymmetry by combining Gotoh's 1977 quartic yield stress function with kinematic hardening. The new fourth-order yield stress function in plane stress has up to a total of eleven material constants: seven for on-axis yielding and four for off-axis yielding. The nonlinear parameter identification by least-square minimization with positivity and convexity constraints on the yield stress function is detailed for various sheet metals exhibiting strength differential effects. The results show that the new Gotoh-Prager yield stress function has adequate capabilities for modeling both on-axis and off-axis asymmetric yielding of many orthotropic sheet metals investigated over the years.

This short paper deals with the current research trends of artificial intelligence (AI) in the manufacturing sector and the usage of specialized AI software at the company level before the appearance of publicly available chatbots. Since the research is focused mostly on four main areas of domain specific problems, there are no available data on the actual use of AI in manufacturing companies. The recent iteration of the European Manufacturing Survey (EMS) allowed data collection regarding AI usage in manufacturing companies from a subsample of 386 firms in Croatia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. The results show the use of specialized AI software across six production areas in manufacturing companies, and that company size and role in the supply chain do not contribute to the probability of AI usage.

In the realm of remanufacturing, the strategic choice of globalization stands at a crossroads, promising technological leaps, enhanced value creation, and broader opportunities. This study unveils a sophisticated model that scrutinizes the impact of incentive policies, with a focus on outsourcing subsidies, on the financial outcomes of manufacturers and third-party remanufacturers within the circular economy. Incorporating variables such as pricing strategies, remanufacturing capacity, and warranty costs, the model sets forth distinct objectives and constraints for both parties. The findings highlight the profound influence of these incentives on profitability dynamics. While manufacturers have the potential to amplify both the remanufacturing market and their profit margins through judicious use of these incentives, the success of such endeavors hinges on factors like market demand, astute pricing, and cost optimization. The research delineates three plausible scenarios: (1) manufacturers facing downturns while third-party remanufacturers prosper, (2) a win-win profitability scenario, or (3) a challenging landscape with losses for both. To navigate these outcomes and ensure effective policy implementation, a deep understanding of market intricacies and strategic cost management is paramount. In essence, this study accentuates the importance of meticulously designed policies and decision-making tools in fostering a resilient circular economy and sustainable progression, serving as a beacon for industry stakeholders.

In this paper, a method is presented to determine the individual tire slippages and wheel circumferential forces/torques for vehicles with individually-driven wheels. The method is based on a system of parameters of individual wheels mathematically linked to the vehicle generalized parameters. The paper demonstrates an inverse approach on how the generalized parameters can be used to determine individual wheel parameters when the vehicle generalized parameters are given for a single, generalized wheel, whose kinematics and dynamics are equivalent to those of the vehicle. The method can be applied to improve terrain mobility and energy efficiency of autonomous ground vehicles, including planet rovers whose guidance systems do not take into consideration that the tire slippages and circumferential forces are different or should be different by determining individual parameters of the e-motors to provide maximum mobility or energy efficiency in a straight line motion.

Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic/aluminum alloy (CFRTP/AL) composite laminates have the advantages of low density, high specific strength, and good fatigue resistance, which is a new type of engineering composite material to realize lightweight vehicle body. Heterogeneous interface delamination failure occurs in the forming process of the fiber metal laminates (FMLs). It is necessary to establish an effective finite element simulation strategy to accurately predict the delamination failure behavior of FMLs. In this work, thermoplastic PA6 continuous carbon fiber/AL FMLs were taken as the research object, and the double cantilever beam (DCB) and the end-notched flexure (ENF) experiments were carried out to determine the basic mechanical parameters between the interlayer interfaces of CFRTP/AL. Furthermore, a numerical simulation model based on ABAQUS software was developed to describe the progressive damage failure behavior of the CRFTP/AL in the forming process by using the equivalent modeling strategy of discontinuous micro-shear, which realized the effective prediction of ply directional damage failure of FMLs on the basis of the S-beam model. The results show that the established damage constitutive model and numerical method coupled with cohesive zone model (CZM) can effectively predict the ply directional damage failure behavior of CFRTP/ AL composites during the large deformation forming.

Drying involves the concurrent transfer of heat, mass, and momentum. Temperature, concentration, and velocity gradients serve as the driving factors for heat, mass, and momentum transfer, respectively. Researchers have recently endeavoured to develop computational models that integrate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) into the drying process. However, these models were specifically designed for convective drying of individual samples and did not account for the effects of non-uniformity in process parameters, such as air velocity and temperature, when drying multiple samples simultaneously. In this research, we have conducted simulations of a 2D and 3D CFD integrated drying model for multiple samples. Our aim was to assess the uniformity of air velocity, sample temperature, and moisture content at various positions and arrangements of the samples in the drying chamber. Increasing the air velocity had a significant impact on moisture removal and maintaining consistent temperatures among the samples. Furthermore, the position of the samples has an obvious influence on the drying rate. For instance, the sample closest to hot air inlet experiencing faster moisture loss compared to those positioned towards the air exit. Additionally, there was noticeable non-uniformity in air velocity across the drying chamber and sample temperature, as indicated by the Coefficient of Variation (COV). These findings provide valuable insights to optimize drying conditions for improved energy efficiency and reduced quality degradation.

Local scour around bridge piers is a significant factor that affects the stability of a bridge structure. Accurate pier scour depth estimation is important for safe and economical bridge design, which requires understanding the complex three-dimensional flow field around a pier and associated sediment transport. Scour depth around a pier is related to the flow, sediment, and pier characteristics. Several empirical equations are available in the literature to calculate the design scour depth, but accurate estimation is not possible due to the complexity of the scouring process. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) can be an alternative tool for modeling the scour process and estimating scour depth. This study investigates the application of ANNs to estimate the maximum scour depth around different-shaped bridge piers (uniform and non-uniform piers). The feed-forward back-propagation neural network is used to develop the scour models. Dimensionless independent variables are supplied to the ANN models to obtain the maximum scour depth at different-shaped piers. For uniform piers, the RMSE values are 0.172 and 0.205 during model calibration and validation, respectively, and the corresponding R-2 values are 0.888 and 0.834. Further, an ANN model is developed to predict the scour depth at non-uniform piers. The RMSE values are 0.333 and 0.625 during calibration and validation, respectively, and the corresponding R-2 values are 0.973 and 0.897. About 95% of the datasets are confined within the margin of +/- 25% error. It is concluded that the ANN can predict the local scour depth accurately for different-shaped bridge piers.

In a paradigm increasingly marked by the emergence and use of new technologies, economic flourishing is no longer enough to fill all of society's concerns. The three dimensions of sustainability are increasingly in people's consciousness. In parallel, the United Nations (UN) has launched a set of 17 sustainable development goals that aim to provide a more prosperous future for all societies. Future digital switchover projects should not be blind to this "sustainable" impact. In this sense and given that several works have already appeared that expose the technological benefits considering the 17 UN goals, this work aims to provide a systematization of the main impacts of the most popular emerging technologies on the SDG, to help in the planning of the digitalization processes. Predictive capability by Artificial Intelligence, the ability to connect and provide real-time data, achieved by the Internet of Things, and data security achieved by the Blockchain prove to be advantages in terms of sustainability and can be pillars of support for the digital transition.

Belt drive systems are integral to many industrial machines, but their deterioration can compromise product quality and lead to mechanical damage. Traditional belt health assessment methods often suffer from limited accuracy or require manual intervention. This research proposes a novel approach to belt drive system health assessment and predictive maintenance (PdM). By integrating physical friction models with data-driven techniques, we achieve accurate and interpretable health assessments for timing belts within permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). Our method avoids the need for additional sensors, ensuring cost-effectiveness. It also merges predictive analytics, identifying potential failures, with prescriptive analytics, suggesting the most effective maintenance actions. This combined approach helps to minimize downtime, optimize component lifespans, and reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns. The proposed methodology offers a compelling solution for industries seeking to enhance the reliability and efficiency of their belt-driven machinery.

Inland navigation requires a stable navigational path with least available water depth (LAD). River confluence is an important feature of a river network where two flows merge with different flow characteristics. It is the site of the natural scour phenomenon. The eroded sediment is deposited as a bar at the inner bank, reducing effective navigational width, particularly in the dry season. Existing river training works like vanes or piles installed in the main channel are problematic for navigation. Hence, in the present study, introducing a spur dike in the lateral channel is proposed to control bar formation and blockage ratio (W-b/W-d, bar width/downstream channel width). Experiments are conducted on a mobile bed model with a confluence angle (theta) of 90 degrees. The results show a reduction in bar volume and blockage ratio by 38.5% and 22.4%, respectively, at river confluence using a 60 degrees downstream-oriented (theta(s)) spur dike with an effective length of (L-eff) 0.2W(l) (W-l is the lateral channel width), placed at a distance of 6L(eff) in the lateral channel from the inner corner of river junction.
