Ring damped wheels have been widely applied on metro vehicles. However, mechanisms by which vibration and sound radiation are reduced with the ring damper have not been fully understood. The optimization of damper is much concerned in academic and industrial fields. This study conducts a series of tests in lab to study the influence of preload and the damper types, on the effect of vibration reduction. The preload is changed by inserting plug-pages between the two ends of the ring, and the damper types include ring, ring attached with rubber layer, and ring attached with rubber layer and additional mass. Through analyzing the vibration characteristics, it is found that the damping ratios of the axial and radial wheel modes change to different degree, making some difference in the overall vibration level.

In the coming decades, a primary challenge for the global economy lies in reconciling economic growth with environmental sustainability and the responsible consumption of natural resources. The transition from a linear economy to a circular one has gained recognition as a pivotal strategy for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Industrial Symbiosis (IS) emerges as a crucial tool in this transition, fostering a circular economy at both national and global levels. IS represents an innovative approach to minimize raw material extraction and optimize resource utilization. Despite recognized environmental, economic, and social benefits, various barriers hinder IS implementation, particularly in manufacturing environments and few detailed case studies in scientific literature have been reported. This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap by systematically analyzing 16 selected articles on IS in manufacturing systems. The analysis categorizes case studies by various parameters, including publication year, manufacturing sector, country, entities involved, IS network characteristics, and exchange methods. It also highlights key trends, barriers, and drivers for IS implementation. The study reveals an increasing interest in IS since 2011, emphasizing its potential to address sustainability challenges while fostering economic growth. It underscores the importance of clear legislation, economic incentives, and knowledge dissemination to facilitate IS adoption. In conclusion, industrial symbiosis and the circular economy are vital strategies to achieve sustainable resource management and economic resilience. Overcoming barriers and promoting IS practices are essential steps towards a more sustainable future.

Optimizing heat treatment processes is crucial for achieving optimal product quality within economically and environmentally effective ways. Non-uniformities in heat treatments can have detrimental effects on product quality, resulting in substantial losses in manufacturing efficiency. To optimize these heat treatment processes, this study employs nonlinear least square minimization with the Gauss-Newton algorithm to solve inverse boundary design problems. A vacuum batch furnace has been considered where the desired heat treatment is imposed at the specific locations referred to as design points within the workpiece. Two heater layouts were analyzed, and the required furnace heater temperatures have been successfully determined to achieve the desired heat treatment for both layouts. The findings highlight that ensuring uniform treatment at the design points requires nonuniform heater temperatures. Our analyses reveal that inverse solutions for heat treatment processes provide valuable tools for obtaining a range of desired treatments while highlighting the trade-offs between treatment effectiveness and practical implementation.

Industry 4.0 brought modernization to the productive system through the network integration of the constituent entities that, combined with the evolution of information technologies, allowed an increase in productivity, product quality, production cost optimization, and product customization to customer needs. In this paper a model was created using the open-source tool Knime that, based on a set of data provided by Bosch, parameterized the model with several pre-processing techniques, resource selection, and minimization of over-fitting, allowing the development of a final improved model for internal product failure prediction at Bosch production line. The study shows that model efficiency improved with the application of resource selection and reduction techniques, with Logistic Regression and PCA resource selection techniques standing out, obtaining a Recall of 100% and precision and accuracy, both with 99.43%.

The DLFR reactor is a pre-conceptual design for a lead-cooled fast reactor developed by the Westinghouse Electric Company. The reactor is a demonstration version of the project and it is intended to prove the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the technology, prior to commercial deployment. For the purpose of this paper, a DLFR reactor core model was created in OpenMC software, through which the effects of two fuel types - uranium dioxide and uranium nitride on the neutronic parameters were studied. Moreover, the paper presents a number of advantages of fast reactors over the more commonly used thermal reactors. A series of simulations were carried out using the Monte Carlo method for two fuel configurations of the DLFR reactor core. The output data analyzed included the effective neutron multiplication factor, neutron flux as a function of neutron energy, conversion ratio, and isotope mass change as a function of time and burnup. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that uranium nitride is a promising alternative fuel relative to uranium dioxide, feasible for use in new types of nuclear reactors. In addition, it has been shown that minor actinide production is significantly lower in fast reactors compared to thermal reactors. This indicates that the greater use of fast-spectrum reactors can contribute significantly to reducing the long-lived nuclear waste disposal problem.

Numerical simulations of the noise radiated by a train bogie under the leading car of a high-speed train are carried out using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA). In order to reduce the grid size and increase the grid quality, a hybrid grid is used to discretize the computational domain. The Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation method with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is used to simulate the unsteady flow field. The aerodynamic results show that the shear layer detached from upstream of the bogie cavity is critical for the aerodynamic noise generation of the leading car. The time-varying surface pressure is collected during the unsteady simulation and then used as input for the far field noise calculation, which uses the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation. The one-third octave noise spectra show broadband characteristics with the contribution from low frequencies being dominant. The results show that the bogie cavity contributes more to the sound power than the bogie itself.

In recent years, the traditional manufacturing industry has been affected by the advent of Industry 4.0. Robotic systems have become a standard tool in modern manufacturing, due to their unique characteristics, such as repeatability, precision, speed, and high payload. However, robotics manipulators suffer from low reliability. Low reliability increases the probability of disruption in manufacturing processes, maximizing in this way the downtime and the maintenance costs. Consequently, for complex systems, like robots which consist of a lot of interdependent components, with various failures, it is critical to develop effective reliability assessment techniques to ensure high performance. Until now, there are several reliability assessment methods, but they are mostly time-consuming and expert-knowledge-intensive processes. This research develops a model-based approach for the reliability calculation of a robotic cell pinpointing the simplifications that are taking into account. Furthermore, a data-driven approach is proposed with the aim to enhance the results of the model-based approach and to improve the reliability of the robotic system towards the new directions that Industry 4.0 technologies can offer, by predicting the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of critical components, using real-time data, thanks to the Digital Twin (DT).

This study presents the empirical mode decomposition method (EMD) for vehicle vibration and a correlation detection approach for input from road and vehicle body vibration using the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). Although the magnitude squared coherence is commonly used to examine the correlation of vehicle vibration with road input, it is not suitable for non-stationary vibration. On the other hand, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) which consists of EMD and the Hilbert transform is proposed. This method is suitable for transient vibration analysis, while the drawbacks to intermittence signals are suggested. Vehicle vibration signals include intermittence signals in some cases. In this study, the masking EMD which adapts the mask signal to the amplitude of the target signal was applied to vehicle vibration to alleviate the drawbacks. By this method, the correlation analysis by HHT demonstrates higher temporal resolution compared to the continuous wavelet transform. Thus, it becomes possible to identify the components that caused vibrations at the moments when the passengers felt comfortable or uncomfortable, and to analyze the characteristics of the vibrations.

Saudi Arabia has developed a plan to reach carbon neutrality following The Paris Agreement and hydrogen fuel is an essential part of that plan. It has also established its Saudi National Atomic Energy Project (SNAEP) and is looking towards adding nuclear power to the energy mix. This paper begins by exploring the energy landscape in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, it elaborates on different methods to produce hydrogen, and specifically how nuclear energy can be utilized to produce hydrogen. The feasibility study provides an economic assessment that compares the operation cost of producing hydrogen using different technologies and energy sources. It was concluded that using nuclear energy in producing hydrogen gives the lowest levelized cost of hydrogen compared to other clean sources. Furthermore, it was found that implementing a high temperature electrolysis process that uses electricity from a nuclear power plant along with heat can lead to higher economic and technical efficiencies compared to other electrolysis processes because it uses 26% less electricity. With the construction of a nuclear power plant in Saudi Arabia, the country has the chance to build a hydrogen production infrastructure with advanced technologies that might greatly aid in optimizing its position as a worldwide energy leader.

In recent years, with the development of wheel-side motors and hub motors, distributed electric drive vehicles, gradually enter the electric vehicle *** force are often derived from rule-based model in the past. However, distributed electric drive vehicles have a higher degree of freedom put forward new control requirements. This puts forward higher requirements for the accuracy of the tire force model. Rule-based model cannot meet the requirements quite well. Because of this, our study established a tire force residual correction framework for distributed electric drive vehicles. The framework consists of a neural network model (MLP, MLP-seq, and MLP-mixer) and a physical rule-based model. The framework was proved in the study to output a more accurate force estimation which will help dynamic modeling and control tasks.
