The progress in sheet metal forming owes a lot to cutting-edge tools, especially in the vast field of finite element simulations. These simulations are a game-changer for delving into numerical investigations. To ensure the reliability and quality of results, it's crucial to accurately model material behavior throughout the forming process. This involves characterizing and determining the material properties under scrutiny and translating them into numerical material models. In the business of creating a ferritic steel matrix reinforced with brittle ceramic particles like TiB2, the need to know how these materials behave under different loads is necessary. This understanding is gold when it comes to modeling their mechanical properties and predicting how they'll shape up. This study describes new ground by applying a 12% TiB2 content Fe-TiB2 composite to the shearing process. A user interface material subroutine (VUMAT) is performed. The focal point of this investigation resides in the anticipation of how specific pivotal process parameters, such as the thickness of the blank and the applied holding load, influence the quality attributes of the final product. Additionally, the objective is to show the shearing deformation capabilities of Fe-TiB2 composite and to represent its performance.

Titanium alloys, namely Ti-6Al-7Nb, have found growing importance in biomedical industry applications. CNC machining plays a decisive role in the production of these components. Thiswork presents amethod for the classification of shape and evaluation of morphology and size of Ti-6Al-7Nb segmented chip, turned with different cutting parameters. The method is based on the association of optical microscopy and digital image processing and analysis. Theoretical morphological data have been comparedwith the experimental image data obtained by digital microscopy. There was a remarkable shift of teeth morphology by increasing the cutting speed from 30 to 90 m/min. This suggests that for the cutting conditions tested for Ti-6Al-7Nb, increasing cutting speed will intensify the thermal effect responsible for the formation of narrow deformation zones which will promote the appearance of tooth morphologies. The advantage of the approach is its effectiveness in inspecting the evolution of chip segmentation geometry during the machining process.

The versatility of customer demand in addition to globalization involves companies to focus on how to improve their global performance. Industry 4.0 concepts are used by large companies for increasing their performance. Despite the success of these concepts, SMEs are reluctant to exploit them for their digital transformation. Nevertheless, human-machine collaboration by combining sustainability aspects with these new technologies corresponds to a solution for their performance improvement. This paper focuses on the use of computer vision and mobile robots for optimizing a production manufacturing through lean manufacturing methodology exploitation. Indeed, in a production line, products or raw materials transportation corresponds to a waste. A literature review based on organizational methods, industry 4.0 and vision including artificial intelligence tools allows to find concepts that will contribute to develop the solution for SMEs. This paper proposes a sustainable methodology, supported by an intelligent tool to reduce in SMEs, this motion waste and increase the operator's well-being at work. An illustration based on an electronics card SME is presented to validate the concepts and tool that have been elaborated.

Hot ring rolling is a production method to manufacture seamless rings. It is a complex incremental metal-forming process where reduction of cross-section leads to increase in diameter of the ring via circumferential extrusion. High degree of non-linearity and asymmetry is associated with the process. The process results in non-uniform distribution of temperature and plastic strain in the ring cross-section, and this in turn significantly affects the deformation behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Form defect like fishtail defect is also a major concern and incurs loss in terms of labor and machining cost. In this study, rolling of Ti-6Al-4V rings is studied with the help of three-dimensional coupled thermo-mechanical finite element model established using ABAQUS/Explicit environment-based dynamic explicit code. The major parameters taken into consideration for the study are main roll speed (rpm), main roll feed (mm/s), and coefficient of friction. Each parameter was studied at two levels. Twenty simulations with different combinations of major parameters were developed via Central Composite Design (CCD). Coefficient of Variation (CoV) was used as a heterogeneity index to ascertain heterogeneity in equivalent plastic strain (PEEQ) and temperature distribution in the ring. Fishtail defect was quantified using fishtail coefficient as an index. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to ascertain the impact of significant factors and interactions between different parameters affecting the ring rolling process. ANOVA technique requires unrestricted range of (-infinity,infinity) for analysis. Hence, logit transformation is used to transform fishtail coefficient present in the range 0-1 to an unrestricted real number range (-infinity, infinity). Main roll feed rate was found to be the most significant factor affecting CoV (PEEQ), CoV (temperature) and logit transformation of fishtail coefficient and has an inverse correlation and quadratic relationship with

Since the beginning of nuclear industry, corrosion issues have been a major concern. Less than two years after start-up, stress corrosion cracking occurred on the stainless steel tubing of the steam generator of the prototype for the Nautilus in USA (1953);more recently, in 2022, several French Pressurized Water Reactors were shut down due to stress corrosion cracking of stainless steels pipes in a safety injection circuit. We propose to underline the complex corrosion mechanisms linked to the nuclear reactor environments (high temperature and high-pressure water environments) and to present briefly the three main corrosion phenomena occurring in Light Water Reactors (LWRs), after a short overview of the LWR materials: (i) general corrosion of zirconium cladding which limits the life-time of fuel elements to generally 3 cycles;(ii) flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) of carbon steel components, which is the only corrosion phenomenon that has led to several deaths in LWRs;(iii) stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of nickel base alloys ("the Coriou effect") and of stainless steels including irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking;SCC of nickel base alloys has led to the replacement of major components like steam generators or pressurized vessel heads. Finally, the corrosion future will be discussed as LWRs are extending their period of operation up to 60 / 80 years, and even more.

This study aims to quantify the contribution of iron-based Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) in concrete beams reinforcement, using Finite Elements Method (FEM) numerical simulations. In order to achieve this, several steps have been carried out. First, a calibration process to adjust Auricchio and Petrini model to the available experimental data on the Fe-32Mn-6Si has been performed. Then, numerical simulations on both concrete beams reinforced by SMA and conventional steel have been done on Abaqus. The results highlighted the advantages of prestressed beams with SMA reinforcement over prestressed beams with conventional steel reinforcement. It showed that the stresses in concrete could be reduced down to 29% just by heating the reinforcement up to 107 degrees C. This in-depth analysis offers important perspectives for optimizing prestressed structures in civil engineering.

Porosity has long been observed in manufacturing metal alloys, which is much more frequent in additively manufactured (AM) alloys than in those manufactured by traditional methods such as cast and wrought. The common origin of porosity is strongly depending on specific manufacturing process parameters and conditions. In general, pore structures can originate from a variety of factors, including trapped gas, incomplete fusion, cooling rate, feedstock quality, processing parameters and conditions, etc. By carefully controlling the manufacturing process and conditions, the porosity in AM-alloys can be mitigated. Besides, post-AM treatment, e.g., hot isostatic pressing and/or cold working, can reduce the porosity (in both the size and density) through plastic deformation and materials flow. Here, we present a glimpse on porosity and its effect on mechanical performance of AM alloys. Mitigation and closure of porous structures will also be discussed mainly based on recent observations in aluminum- and nickel-based AM alloys, representing high-temperature high-strength and low-density applications, respectively.

Federated learning is a collaborative machine learning approach that allows multiple parties to train a model without exchanging sensitive data. In manufacturing, where different parties may have proprietary or sensitive data that cannot be shared, this is especially useful. However, traditional federated learning approaches (as proposed by McMahan et al.) do not consider the differences in data and computing resources across different parties, leading to sub-optimal model performance. Personalized federated learning addresses this issue by allowing each party to contribute to the model training according to its specific data and resources. Furthermore, most common approaches only consider a limited set of data and a short period of time, without considering the system's long-term usefulness. It is important to consider the integration of new clients and the continuous change of data, which could result in the addition of new classes. This paper will explore the potential of federated learning in manufacturing and present a flexible and expandable approach, focusing on mapping newcomer clients based on activation strength of weights.

Evaluating braking system limits is crucial in designing heavy-duty trucks, often requiring extensive time and resources through field and dynamometer testing. To reduce these demands, modeling approaches have been widely adopted. However, it faces challenges in complex configurations like fuel cell trucks due to interactions between brake and energy systems, particularly regenerative braking, a feature absent in conventional heavy-duty trucks. This paper presents a model that simplifies the representation of these systems in fuel cell trucks, using data-driven models based on field tests. It details constructing and validating a comprehensive brake system model specifically for downhill scenarios in fuel cell trucks, achieving around 99% accuracy in predicting brake limits.

High-rise buildings have become normalized for urban cities as it minimizes the available land used to house many tenants. The stability of the buildings is often subjected to extraneous loading from the wind and ground. When the excitation frequency matches one of the modes of the building, resonance occurs which causes large deformations. As a result, catastrophic damages and failures can occur when buildings are allowed to be excited for long periods. Damping mechanisms are widely adopted in industrial applications for their ability to minimize unwanted vibrations, increase a system's stability, and shift the natural frequency. A two-story building model was developed, and its natural frequencies were studied using finite element analysis techniques. Afterward, a vibration absorber was created to minimize the structural failure with a tuned mass damper. The effectiveness of the absorber was compared both analytically and computationally. A multi-modal vibration absorber can be employed for high-rise buildings to minimize the damage from natural effects such as earthquakes and strong winds.
