The past decade has seen a massive increase in interest in legged robots. This was mainly driven by the commercial availability of affordable quadruped platforms as well as the advancements made in legged robot locomotion research. The combination of AI/ML based control, robust perception systems and the availability of lower cost computing hardware has brought these machines out of research labs, into the consumer domain. This paper proposes and explores an approach to learning cloud-based collaborative design in the framework of a new course that introduces engineering students to Industry 4.0. The approach was implemented in the course workshop and was featured by active learning in the FabLab space, the use of the new SaaS CAD platform Onshape, and a challenging collaborative assignment prompting prototype-redesign iterations. We conducted an exploratory case study that evaluated the proposed approach regarding the workshop learning outcomes and the use of the data analytics tools of Onshape. The participants were 18 junior and senior engineering students majoring in mechanical engineering. We collected the educational research data using pre-course and post-workshop questionnaires as well as using the data analytics tools of the Onshape Education Enterprise. Most students highly evaluated the workshop's contribution to fostering their skills in design collaboration, 3D printing, and engineering problem-solving. The data analytics tools of OEE supported the findings from student reflections and provided objective evidence of design, collaboration, and communication processes that occurred in student teams. The researchers considered this study as a step towards the development of the methodology for cloud-based collaborative design education.

In this era of stringent privacy-related laws, the manual collection of fingerprints is a challenging task. This act as a deterrent for collecting large-scale database which is a prerequisite for implementing deep learning approaches in fingerprint-based applications. So, to overcome these challenges researchers came up with various synthetic fingerprint generation approaches using Generative Adversarial networks (GAN). GANs are deep learning-based generative models which help in generating realistic-looking synthetic data. They help in the generation of fingerprints that are comparative in terms of quality, features and characteristics, with that of manually collected samples. The objective of this paper is to review the existing approaches based on GAN that are used for the synthetic generation of fingerprints. Critical investigation of underlying technological details of various GAN variants for generating synthetic datasets and their comparative analysis aims to assist researchers in the generation of apt data for designing advanced applications. Finally, an appraisal of various performance metrics is presented for the evaluation of the synthetic fingerprint quality to facilitate research.

Harvesting and transportation activities represent a large part of forest companies' costs. With distances separating forests to mills increasing with time, companies must find new ways to improve their logistics activities and doing so, reduce their costs and CO2 emissions. The literature review conducted in this article showed that collaboration is a very efficient way to reduce expenses, especially with wood bartering, transport consolidation, backhauling and logistics platforms for sorting, consolidating, and warehousing. Although studies showed that collaboration can generate major financial and environmental benefits, only a few examples of successful partnerships exist. This article thus highlights methods which have the potential to support collaborative logistics in the forest sector, while identifying the lack of documented partnerships examples in the literature.

A new approach to control and interact with autonomous mobile robots via a head-mounted Augmented Reality device is presented. Such robots are often used for highly repetitive tasks, however, in small and medium-sized enterprises, tasks are often non-repetitive. In such cases, the programming of mobile robots is neither time nor cost-efficient. Hence, a direct human-machine interaction was developed, connecting an Omron LD-90 with a Microsoft HoloLens 2 via a cloud-based communication. Users can send inputs to the mobile robot using voice commands or select from a pre-defined set of actions. The robot will execute the task and send feedback to the HoloLens about its position and other status information. The potential of this new communication approach is exemplified using a small shop floor where a forming machine operator has to fulfill a wide range on tasks, where the mobile robot can support the worker.

The use of urinary steroid metabolomics (USM) in combination with machine learning in endocrinology is briefly introduced. We demonstrate the usefulness of the approach for the detection and differential diagnosis of Primary Aldosteronism (PA), which has been addressed in a recent retrospective study. Here, we mainly present results for the application of the prototype based Generalized Matrix Relevance Learning Vector Quantization for the classification of steroid metabolomics profiles. The method allows for the successful diagnosis of PA and provides insights into the importance of the available markers. Moreover, it facilitates the non-invasive identification of a subtype of PA which is associated with adrenal adenoma harboring a particular mutation in the tumor tissue.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture represents a pivotal advancement in modern farming practices. AI has introduced a transformative dimension to conventional agriculture, offering innovative solutions to the multifaceted challenges facing global food production. The pursuit of heightened profitability through increased productivity underscores the necessity for agricultural sustainability and efficiency. This imperative calls for a departure from conventional farming methods and urges transition toward data-driven, intelligent systems. CM farms located 35 km southeast of Lusaka central district of Zambia, a country in sub-Saharan region, currently faces a challenge of inefficient disease detection in their tomato field due to inconsistent visits of the agronomist to provide expert guidance. When available, the agronomist uses manual methods of disease detection of row-by-row field inspection, which is both labor-intensive and laborious. Consequently, a Convolutional Neural Network model to facilitate real-time tomato leaf disease detection was built. A Raspberry pi was fitted with a camera for capturing and sending of tomato leaf images to a web-based application which was built with a cron job for automated mail transmission to the user. Three deep learning models, namely VGG 16, ResNet 50, and GoogleNet V2 were trained using the plant village dataset which also incorporated diseased and non- diseased leaf images from CM farms. Of the three models, ResNet 50 had the highest accuracy level of 95%, compared to GoogleNet V2 and VGG 16 with accuracy of 85% and 63%, respectively. Subsequently, ResNet was adopted t integrated in the web application.

This paper illustrates the benefits of utilizing Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques in designing parts and assemblies used in challenging environments, such as the aviation industry. Specifically, this study used such a method to optimize the design of landing gear for a Robinson R22-Alpha helicopter. To do so, a physical model of the caret in Ansys and the Full Factorial statistical model defined with Minitab were used. Such analysis allowed to explore the correlation between the geometrical and physical properties by using only a few experiments and to make the design data explicit. The implementation of DOE has the potential to maximize data processing capabilities by increasing productivity in many design applications that require large amounts of information.

Experience in teaching up to university level in computer programming has proven to be a challenge due to the fact that many students did not have a proper exposure to programming during high school. There are teaching and learning theories that describes how teachers teach and students receive, process, and retain knowledge during learning. In literature, there is no theory that have been developed for programming adoption. Thus, the study developed theory of programming adoption. In testing the theory of programming adoption, descriptive and explanatory design was used to help test the model whether it fit the theory or not. The study covered programming students where these students were contacted through Google Forms to answer a questionnaire. Quota sampling technique was used because the study wanted to get as many programming students across the world. A total of 237 programming students took part in the survey. SPSS, AMOS and PROCESS macro were used to analyze the study and test the theory. The Theory of Programming Adoption shows that tutorials, project work and accessibility of resources on the internet have a strong significant effect on students' perception with 139.59%, 27.52% and 98.79% respectively. The highest mediating effect was a mediating effect of students' perception in the relationship between project work and programming adoption with a positive coefficient value of.6472, representing 64.72%. As such, the adoption of computer programming will be higher. The researchers recommend that the TPAshould be used to enhance the theoretical knowledge of future studies.
