The sustainable development goals (SDGs) as specified by the United Nations are a blueprint to make the Earth to be more sustainable by the year 2030. It envisions member nations fighting climate change, achieving gender equality, quality education for all, and access to quality healthcare among the 17 goals laid out. To achieve these goals by the year 2030, member nations have put special schemes in place for citizens while experimenting with newer ways in which a measurable difference can be made. Countries are tapping into ancient wisdom and harnessing newer technologies that use artificial intelligence and machine learning to make the world more liveable. These newer methods would also lower the cost of implementation and hence would be very useful to governments across the world. Of much interest are the applications of machine learning in getting useful information and deploying solutions gained from such information to achieve the goals set by the United Nations for an imperishable future. One such machine learning technique that can be employed is pattern recognition which has applications in various areas that will help in making the environment sustainable, making technology sustainable, and thus, making the Earth a better place to live in. This paper conducts a review of various literature from journals, news articles, and books and examines the way pattern recognition can help in developing sustainably.

Wind energy is gaining significance in the context of evolving sustainability and energy policies. According to GWEC Market Intelligence's forecast, an annual addition of 136 GW is anticipated from 2023 to 2027, reaching a total of 680 GW. The optimistic outlook extends to 2030, surpassing prior projections by 13%. This revision reflects the continuous and escalating potential of wind energy, affirming its pivotal role in the ever-evolving landscape of sustainability and energy policies. With the growing popularity of wind energy, there is a noticeable increase in the number of studies conducted in this field. This study aims to investigate the application of fuzzy methods in the field of wind energy research. The research provides detailed answers to questions about how fuzzy methods are used to address wind energy problems and why they are chosen. Fuzzy logic proves effective in handling uncertainties in wind energy problems and offers solutions to complex issues in this field. A comprehensive literature review indicates that fuzzy methods, along with hybrid approaches, are becoming popular in wind energy studies.

Human-computer interaction has acquired a preponderant role in the domain of the Internet of Things, facilitating the creation of intuitive interfaces and improving user experiences. Despite this, there needs to be more secondary studies characterizing this domain's current state and conceptual structure, leading to a limited understanding of the field. A bibliometric analysis systematically examined 2106 articles published between 2008 and 2023 from Scopus and Web of Science. Publication metadata was analyzed using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer tools to determine significant trends and patterns in the domain. The study results indicate that the annual growth rate of publications was 41.88%, suggesting a growing interest in the field. China led in productivity and funding, followed by the U.S. and the European Union. The research spanned several disciplines, including computer science, engineering, and mathematics, with key research areas focusing on wearables, gamification, and edge computing. The study's main conclusion relates to this domain's rapid growth and multidisciplinary nature, emphasizing user-centered design to address human needs and provide intuitive interactions. It was found that, as the Internet of Things becomes more widespread, human-computer interaction is set to play a critical role in shaping future Internet of Things environments.

Image segmentation is a foundational technique in computer vision with wide-ranging applications, including its critical role in medical imaging for object identification, automatic labeling, and disease diagnosis. Advancements in deep learning have significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of image segmentation, making it an increasingly valuable tool in various domains. Class imbalanced datasets are a frequent problem experienced when trying to train segmentation networks. Class imbalance occurs when some classes (semantic categories) in the image have significantly more instances (pixels) than others. In semantic segmentation, this often happens because certain object categories are more prevalent in the real world or dataset, while others are rarer. When training a deep learning model for semantic segmentation, this imbalance can lead to several problems. In this article, we have experimented with the class weightage parameters of binary focal loss to address the class imbalance problem in semantic segmentation. By utilizing the CANDID-PTX dataset, we have utilized U-Net architecture containing upsampling (encoder) and a downsampling (decoder) network for comparing binary focal loss rates among different alpha and gamma coefficients class weights. Doing so, we found that the adjustment of class weights in the loss function could notably help in resolving the class imbalance problems.

This study is a practical way of teaching software engineering and microbiology in a virtual setting, which is beneficial during natural calamities, including the recent pandemic. This project details how the software engineering students developed a virtual lab for the microbiology students that started as a class project. The benefit of creating the project for the software engineering students was that it helped to develop their soft skills and the details of collecting requirements. Similarly, it allowed the microbiology students to collaborate with software engineering students to educate them on the protocol and eventually practice the MALDI-TOF experiment before they do it in their labs. Input from microbiology students seems crucial in ensuring that the virtual lab accurately reflects the real-world lab environment and meets the needs of those conducting experiments. This study explains how students learned to communicate in developing real-world software as a class project. The study exemplifies how technology can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

We introduce a framework for selecting the number of codebook vectors in a vector quantizer based on local characteristics of the data density, the degree to which the process of VQ distorts the representation of this density, and the theoretical efficiency of estimators of these densities. In our analysis, L-2 theory from kernel density estimation relates the number of VQ prototypes to observed sample size, dimension, and complexity, all of which intuitively influence codebook sizing.

One of the most pressing issues is to assess the feasibility of the given projects to create an information and management system (IMS). To solve this problem, the training procedure of fuzzy cognitive modeling (FCM) was used. Thus, this method allows searching for the best values of factors that reflect the possibility of realization of projects in the case of available resources, in accordance with the contract for the creation of IMS. A learning algorithm is given here, which includes the stage of processing the values of the parameters of the vertices of the graph representing the FCM and the relationships between them. Thus, the values of the vectors consisting of the vertex parameters of the graph representing the FCM were analyzed and if they satisfy all the given constraints, then it was concluded that the developed FCM ensures the realization of the project to create an IMS with the available resources. Otherwise, if at least one value from the vector of the graph's vertex parameters does not satisfy the given constraints, then it is recommended that it is necessary to change the structure of the FCM, that is, to include the vertices of the graph and the connections between them, or to cancel those connections. #CSOC1120.

Considering the great challenge of implementing digital tools to improve collaboration in the value chain and promote the adoption of circularity strategies, as is the case with digital traceability tools and digital product passports. This paper presents an innovative proposal for implementing an industrial data sharing ecosystem, namely an architecture and platform for digital traceability between entities based on Data Spaces. To validate our proposal, a use case scenario was implemented as part of the BioShoes4All project.

Strategic decision-making to invest in building stock energy retrofit is a time-consuming task, requiring a significant amount of complex and technical data with high acquisition costs in its conventional form. Besides cost data of various retrofit alternatives, needing unit-based calculations, the monetary value of resulting benefits, like saved energy, should be considered for making cost-efficient decisions by policymakers. On the other hand, novel techniques for building retrofit are gaining increasing attention due to their vital role in sustaining the built environment and lowering energy consumption, especially in countries like Italy, where a significant share of the residential building stock is outdated. With advancements in data-collection methods and data-driven decision support systems, more data is available, based on which these decisions can be automated and optimized. This research aims to provide a comprehensive framework for an automated cost-benefit analysis for various energy retrofit scenarios given their energy-saving potential, implementation cost, and associated investment payback period. Based on Italian National databases, i.e., CENED (Building Energy Certificate), TABULA, and Superbonus Cost data of the Lombardy Region, this study proposes a building stock clustering using energy labels, building technologies, and construction period to identify building archetypes. Moreover, the maximum investment amount of each cluster (archetype) for different payback periods is calculated using Monte Carlo Simulation and is compared to the estimated retrofit cost based on regional price lists for each archetype. This cost-benefit analysis using estimated retrofit cost and saved energy cost contributes to faster, more objective, factual, and cost-optimized decision-making for urban-level energy retrofit decision-making, highlighting the importance of government funding and subsidies like Superbonus in achieving sustainability, energy efficiency, and de

We are presenting the utilization of mediative fuzzy logic (MFL) in control. MFL was initially put forward with the idea of modeling contradictory knowledge among two or more experts. In this case, an MFL solution could be a better alternative in a control problem. We are extending fuzzy control to the MFL realm for cases where there are at least two experts and fuzzy controller design is based on their knowledge. Simulation results in a nonlinear plant show the feasibility of the proposal by surpassing alternative approaches. This conceptualization and its applications have no been previously presented in the literature.
