Medical data stands out as one of the most valuable sources of information in contemporary data mining research. These datasets encapsulate diverse information, from patient records to current situations. Simultaneously, this wealth of information poses a challenge for data mining due to its diversity and the requirement for context to discern which data holds value and what conclusions truly contribute to generating new knowledge. In this work, we leverage a database of medical records from patients' visits to several hospitals across several years, enhancing it with hospital information and a disease ontology. This allows us to identify a medical diagnosis at various levels of semantic depth. Based on this information, we propose information mining centered around extracting association rules at progressive specific levels concerning diagnoses. Subsequently, we present the initial results of this study for different sets of diseases and suggest the most relevant steps for development based on these outcomes.

The paper provides an overview of advancements in bird detection and recognition systems using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It highlights the increasing adoption of wind farms amid rising electricity demand, underscoring their environmental impact on avian species. To address these ecological challenges, the development of bird recognition solutions is crucial. The paper analyzes various techniques, including radar systems, sound recognition, Convolutional Neural networks (CNNs), electromagnetic detection, YOLOv5, and color segmentation, discussing their features, computational costs, and constraints. It concludes that while deep learning models offer superior results, they need a balance between accuracy and speed, alongside training with large and representative datasets. Ultimately, the paper aims to contribute to efforts aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of wind farms on bird populations through advanced technologies. Additionally, through this paper we intend to shed light over the state of the art on bird detection systems and provide insights that intends to solve some of these drawbacks.

Precision agriculture allows for the sustainable improvement of agricultural products by introducing technologies that provide crop-specific data, which supervised algorithms can process. However, supervised algorithms require expert-labeled data, which can be highly expensive in agricultural applications. Given this problem, active learning (AL) arises as an alternative to reduce the need to annotate training examples manually. This paper analyzes the use of AL in classifying agricultural crop images. To evaluate AL, two datasets with information on fruit and vegetable images were used on two neural network-based algorithms. The classification results indicate that AL reduced the number of training examples to achieve a given performance. Additionally, the pseudo-labels of the supervised algorithms, a stopping criterion, and the explainability of the predictions were analyzed. These analyses allowed to assess the applicability of AL in agriculture to understand the learning process of the supervised algorithms.

Bankrupt companies are entitled to pay back creditors a fraction of their debts during business failure resulting in substantial monetary losses for customers. Thus, companies seek bankruptcy protection to reassess capital and develop plans to support creditors. Hence, predicting bankruptcy is critical for stakeholders (e.g., banking industry, creditors). Researchers have predicted bankruptcy based on data (e.g., financial, non-financial, economic, and market variables) and have adopted a range of models (e.g., statistical, financial, machine learning, and deep learning). However, its full potential of selecting a subset of variables and using selected machine learning models on real datasets is yet to be explored. Here, we collected bankruptcy data from 1999 to 2009 on Taiwan's economy. Here, we employ four methods (e.g., variance threshold, recursive feature elimination, logistic stepwise, and consideration of economic factors) to shortlist variables. Further, we deploy four ML models (e.g., logistic regression, random forest (RF), gradient boosting, and XGBoost). Key findings indicated that XGBoost (97% accuracy) and RF (96% accuracy) perform best when the SMOTE algorithm addresses data imbalance. As per the RF classifier, variables including net income to stockholder's equity, net value growth rate, borrowing dependency, and persistent EPS in the last four seasons ranked higher for bankruptcy prediction. Our model is easy to adopt and performs better to present bankrupt and non-bankrupt firms' discrepancies. The results discussed here should be useful to decision-makers (e.g., bankers, policy analysts, and economic and financial agencies) across the world and they would benefit by launching preventative measures to avoid financial loss.

This study compares several hybrid dynamic models built with offline data to optimize nanobody production in Escherichia coli. These models combine the insights of mechanistic knowledge and Machine Learning algorithms (ML). Four ML algorithms were tested: Support Vector Regressor (SVR), Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT) and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN). The efficacy of each model was analyzed with three metrics: mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE). Results demonstrate that the radial basis function (RBF) SVR model performed best simulations, with a NRMSE between 0.063 and 0.665. The insights gained are pivotal for advancing computational modeling techniques in biomanufacturing, with a specific emphasis on the production of recombinant therapeutic proteins, such as nanobodies, using bacterial hosts.

Employing a stochastic cost frontier model based on Battese and Coelli (Empirical Economics 20:325-332, 1995), this study assesses cost efficiency and examines the impact of digital banking on Taiwan's banking industry, utilizing data from 16 banks spanning 2018 to 2021. Digital banking, characterized by digital account openings and digital transaction volume, is scrutinized. Results indicate a positive correlation between digital accounts and enhanced cost efficiency. However, the influence of digital transaction volumes exhibits mixed effects, signaling a lag in financial innovation and digital service expansion among public sector banks compared to their private counterparts. Analysis of the technical gap ratio and metafrontier cost efficiency unveils a shift toward proactive digital transformation in private banks from 2020 to 2021, emphasizing the growing imperative for digital adaptation accentuated by the pandemic.

The growing demand for recombinant-based products has increased rapidly in recent years. One of the current market scopes is the production of recombinant scorpion antivenoms in E. coli. However, there are limitations in real-time quantification of Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs), such as recombinant proteins or biomass concentrations. Soft sensors merge as an alternative to solve this problem. In this work, six data-driven soft sensors were developed for online monitoring of the recombinant protein concentration. First, feature selection methods were tested to determine the relevant online variables to train the soft sensors. Then, the protein experimental dataset was augmented using a hybrid model. The K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) Support Vector Machine (SVM) obtained the best results with R-2 values higher than 0.996, RMSE and MAE values less than 0.058 and 0.051. However, the KNN soft sensor was computed in less time than the RBF SVM soft sensor. These results show the feasibility of KNN and RBF soft sensors for real-time monitoring of recombinant scorpion antivenoms.

This paper focuses on the development of two prediction models for a solar photovoltaic system that is part of a multimachine industrial manufacturing plant. These models are part of the set of models that form the digital twin of their physical counterparts, which will be used to perform control and optimization strategies to maximize the use of renewable energy sources within a Digital Twin (DT) architecture. The first model is based on a fuzzy neural network and the second one is a Gaussian regression model. The obtained models present a good performance in the prediction of the nonlinear dynamic over the entire operating range in the system.

The interpretation of the classification result obtained with a fuzzy decision tree is a not-so-easy task as the meaning of the obtained degrees of membership may depend on the type of fuzzy partition involved, ranging from probabilistic to possibilistic readings. Hybrid probabilistic-possibilistic mixtures can provide an interesting way to clarify the underlying components of such a classification result. In this paper, based on the hybrid-mixture model, a new approach is proposed to analyse the result of the classification with a fuzzy decision tree that enhance the explainability of this model.

The research work carried out answers the following question, how are the elements of audiovisual language presented in the scenes of the episode "Face Off" of the series Breaking Bad, season 4 (2022)? The objective is to analyze the audiovisual language of the series "Breaking Bad", the thirteenth episode "Face to Face" of the fourth season, created by Vince Gilligan in 2008. The methodology applied in this research is qualitative, with a phenomenological approach, making use of the method of content analysis and observation sheets to process the data, which resulted in the greater use of open shots and joint shots in almost half of the 63 scenes, where normal angles and the still camera predominate. In addition, the greatest use is made of artificial lights, intangible lights, side, filler and base lights. On the other hand, the images are saturated and with a nuance that leans toward warm, using interior and exterior scenery, both natural and artificial. On the other hand, the use of garments surpasses the use of makeup, performances by non-professional stars, actors and performers. In terms of sound, the use of voices is quite noticeable, while asynchronous, synchronous, spatial and studio sounds appear to a lesser extent. In conclusion, the Breaking Bad series makes correct use of image and sound, generating harmony and dynamism in them.
