With the standardization of emojis, by the Unicode consortium, their use was quickly adopted in publications on social networks. Since then, several studies have been carried out on the functions of emojis in digital communication. Emojis were assigned meanings of emotion, sentiment, semantics, digital gestures, and syntax. We sought to understand the points of view of authors who defend the existence of emoji grammar or emoji syntax and those who, on the contrary, defend that emojis have a function of digital gestures. The research for this review was conducted using the PRISMA model. In this study, we tried to understand whether social media users have a syntactic concern when using emoji sequences. We only considered studies that work with messages published on social networks, or equivalent data, such as messages exchanged via computer or mobile applications. The literature on the use of emoji sequences on social media distinguishes the use of repeated emojis from the use of non-repeating emojis. In the latter, it is possible to find sequences with syntax features. Although these studies used small corpus sizes, we concluded that some users show syntactic concerns when using emoji sequences. The authors propose to use Emoji Semantic Extractor combined with EmojiNet to search for the existence of syntactic sequences of emojis in large blocks of messages.

Edge cloud technologies have transformed the way enterprises handle data processing, disaster recovery, and data protection. Moving computing resources closer to the network's edge enables the edge cloud to deliver faster processing, lower latency, reliable data recovery and backups, enhanced scalability, and optimized bandwidth utilization. However, in comparison to traditional data-centers, this transition poses additional issues. A comparative analysis of business demands is required to guarantee that edge cloud computing meets specific criteria such as high performance, data protection, and data security. Nonetheless, there are challenges relating to disaster data recovery, network infrastructure, and standardization that must be overcome in order to fully exploit the potential of the edge cloud. In this context, the role of edge cloud solutions in disaster response and emergency management systems, as well as their impact on data backup, resource flexibility, and risk mitigation, requires further investigation. To ensure data security in edge cloud technology, blockchain plays a vital role;however, this architecture has limitations, specifically in disaster recovery scenarios. To address the limitations of blockchain architecture in edge cloud computing and to maintain data privacy and security in the edge cloud, we propose integrating a deep neural network (DNN) based intrusion detection system (IDS) model into the edge cloud architecture. This solution aims to enhance the security of the edge cloud while mitigating latency issues caused by blockchain, particularly in environments with high data recovery and emergency management requirements. We assessed our proposed DNN based IDS model using a publicly available intrusion dataset. Result shows that integrating DNN-based IDS into the edge cloud improves latency issues arising from the blockchain architecture during the data recovery and emergency management scenario.

Visual information means large amounts of data. Therefore, methods of representing images using sparse features are constantly being researched, which are effective in at least two aspects: they enable accurate classification and are lightweight. In the paper, we present a number of this type of sparse features, which arise from various combinations of features originating from the semantic layers of the ResNet-50 network and compressed with one of two dominant component analysis methods. The first is principal component analysis and the second is neighborhood component analysis. The obtained results confirm our initial assumptions that various combinations of features and component analysis enable both classification and content-based image retrieval at the level of the best performing methods.

Fuzzy sets allow elements to have partial membership in a set, represented by a membership value between 0 and 1. This feature enables fuzzy sets to model imprecise or vague concepts. Decomposed fuzzy sets, an extension of fuzzy sets, have introduced a novel perspective in the literature by incorporating the Kano model into risk assessment. These sets have also paved the way for new approaches in decision-making methods, highlighting their functional and dysfunctional elements. In this paper, we propose a distance measure for decomposed fuzzy sets and subsequently extend the TODIM method based on this distance measure to DFSs. Then, we provide a numerical example to illustrate its effectiveness and practicality.

ICTs can play a key role in addressing the challenge of energy access in rural areas of developing countries. It is essential to choose the right technology to suit the context, as these areas have characteristics that must be considered for the correct appropriation of solutions, such as the instability of the network or the age of the devices. The aim of this study is to analyze which devices and which development technologies are the most suitable for the development of digital solutions in rural areas of developing countries. To this end, on the one hand a comparison is made between mobile and fixed terminals, with the result that mobile devices are the most suitable due to penetration figures, availability of mobile networks and affordability. On the other hand, mobile development solutions such as, Native Apps, Hybrid Apps, Mobile Web Apps and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are analyzed. After analyzing the technologies from the user's point of view, considering aspects such as adoption, affordability and usage, it is concluded that the optimal solution is PWA technology, as it combines the favorable aspects of web and application development. Finally, a successful case of the development of an energy access management tool developed with PWA technology for a rural electrification project in Ngabe Bugle, Panama, is presented.

In this paper, neural network (NN) adaptive tracking control for uncertain nonlinear systems is proposed to attenuate the effects caused by unmodeled dynamics, disturbances and variable operating conditions of a wheeled mobile robot with mecanum wheels. A NN with basic sigmoid functions is used to compensate for the nonlinearity and variable operating conditions of the robot. There are two features in our approach. The first one is that the drive structure of a Mecanum wheeled mobile robot with four wheels has 3 degrees of freedom and four drive modules, it is an object of an over-actuated type, the missing moment is determined on the basis of the power balance of the drive systems. The second one is that experiments are performed to clarify the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed method.

The evaluation of learning objectives, teaching-learning activities and learning outcome monitoring is the fundamental basis for their further iterative improvement. This paper outlines the development of a mixed-method evaluation instrument designed for cross-reality laboratories. The instrument measures the dimensions of Constructive Alignment (a framework for creating high quality teaching and learning at university level), effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal. In addition, the instrument measures how the laboratory addresses learning outcomes relevant to Work 4.0. For this, 88 initial quantitative items were reduced to 40 through a process involving pre-face validity testing, pre-pilot testing, and pre-pre-testing. The pre-face validity test considered both expert and student feedback. A statistical analysis of the results of a pre-pre-test was carried out to remove further questions from the questionnaire. For this purpose, the Cronbach's alpha as well as the pairwise correlation of the pre-pre-test results were calculated. In the questionnaire's continuing development, the number of questions will be further reduced.

Fraud detection on ID card remote presentation helps determine if a government-issued ID card has been doctored before enabling the user to perform banking and e-commerce activities from home. In the literature, using a semantic segmentation stage before the Fraud Detection Network (FDN) is a common practice. In this way the FDN focuses only on the contents of the ID card to make a prediction. However, this work aims to study whether a different kind of segmentation could allow the FDN using more contextual information of the background to improve performance. We separately trained and tested two FDN architectures with four types of cropping and segmentation. Our models obtained BPCER100 scores of 5.40% and 3.12% respectively. The best performing network achieved that score training with cropped images, which contain a small portion of the background. This indicates that contextual information can increase performance and reduces processing time by using detection networks instead of semantic segmentation.

The big data software stack based on Apache Spark and Hadoop has become mission critical in many enterprises. Performance of Spark and Hadoop jobs depends on a large number of configuration settings. Manual tuning is expensive and brittle. There have been prior efforts to develop on-line and off-line automatic tuning approaches to make the big data stack less dependent on manual tuning. These, however, demonstrated only modest performance improvements with very simple, single-user workloads on small data sets. This paper presents KERMIT-the autonomic architecture for big data capable of automatically tuning Apache Spark and Hadoop on-line, and achieving performance results 30% faster than rule-of-thumb tuning by a human administrator and up to 92% as fast as the fastest possible tuning established by performing an exhaustive search of the tuning parameter space. KERMIT can detect important workload changes with up to 99% accuracy, and predict future workload types with up to 96% accuracy. It is capable of identifying and classifying complex multi-user workloads without being explicitly trained on examples of these workloads. It does not rely on the past workload history to predict the future workload classes and their associated performance. KERMIT can identify and learn new workload classes, and adapt to workload drift, without human intervention.

This paper illustrates the benefits of utilizing Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques in designing parts and assemblies used in challenging environments, such as the aviation industry. Specifically, this study used such a method to optimize the design of landing gear for a Robinson R22-Alpha helicopter. To do so, a physical model of the caret in Ansys and the Full Factorial statistical model defined with Minitab were used. Such analysis allowed to explore the correlation between the geometrical and physical properties by using only a few experiments and to make the design data explicit. The implementation of DOE has the potential to maximize data processing capabilities by increasing productivity in many design applications that require large amounts of information.
