As higher education navigates the shift toward digital and remote learning, innovative technological solutions, including robot assistants, are becoming increasingly important. This systematic literature reviewexplores the potential use of robot assistants in higher education. The research method involves a systematic literature review using the Kitchenham approach, focusing on studies conducted from January 2019 to February 2024. The review identifies 30 relevant articles, discovering the utilization of robot assistants in supporting lectures, teaching practices, and improving learning processes. The discussion emphasizes the utilization of robot assistants in higher education, suggesting their transformative potential in providing personalized support. Ongoing exploration is essential for effectively utilizing robot assistants in higher education. However, the findings suggest that addressing the technical limitations of robots, alongside implementing clearer policies and enhancing teacher training, is essential for the effective adoption of these technologies.

Collaborative Annotation (CA) is a literacy strategy that engages students in critical reading, critical thinking, writing and collaboration all in one activity [1]. This collaboration amongst students promotes social engagement with course materials and has been shown to be beneficial to higher education by improving learning comprehension [2] and soft skills amongst students [3]. For our study, we will investigate the benefits that CA provides higher education courses by means of social engagement with boundary objects in assessment. We have designed several pedagogical pipelines which illustrate how to integrate Collaborative Annotation into several types of assignments. Our research is concerned with the impact CA has on students' quality of learning. This study aims to design pipelines to integrate Collaborative Annotation into several assessment contexts for social engagement.

The autonomy of individuals with disabilities is increasingly common through the use of information and communication technologies, granting them some independence to carry out various activities in everyday environments such as homes and workplaces. This project focuses on the development and implementation of a home automation system for individuals with visual disabilities utilizing neural frequencies. Through this system, multiple actions within the home will be facilitated and communicated through a mobile application. The objective of this project was to enhance mobility, autonomy, and user safety within the home by interpreting concentration data, meditation levels, and electromyography signals. Specific desired actions such as controlling the lighting (on/off) and locking/unlocking the entrance door were targeted. As a result, a proper communication was achieved throughout the entire home automation system, demonstrating an efficiency of 98.75% across all the conducted tests. Overall, this work contributes to enabling individuals with visual disabilities to navigate their homeswith greater ease, independence, and enhanced safety by leveraging the interpretation of neural frequencies and other relevant signals.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a common application for Artificial Intelligence. The goal is to provide language teachers with a simple to apply tool for topic model analyses to integrate into their classroom. The project also involves project based learning for students programming the actual AI web application. The original notion is to provide language teacher with AI methodology without requiring any technical knowledge in AI or any programming skills. Natural Language Processing provides various tools for word frequencies, but also topic modelling, allowing to track the relevance of topics over time in the media or in the literature. In collaboration with University of Technology linguistics, we intend to provide a corpus of classical English and German literature, as well as the option of uploading your own corpus which can be obtained from webscraping or other sources. A team of students of the vocational high school TGM Wien specialised in IT and Software Development is working on the design of the interactive GUI for this NLP application, learning in this way the methods of Natural Language Processing and Artrificial Intelligence in a project based setting. For this the statistical programming language R is utilized which already provides packages with implementation for Natural Language Processing and in addition the shiny package which allows to develop interactie web apps without additional web and app programming. A team of teachers supervises and supports the students during the development process, providing expertise in AI and NLP, in web and app programming, as well as server management. Two intended outcomes exist. Ont the one hand, we want our students to learn Natural Language Processing first hand through development of this application. On the other hand, we intend to obtain an interactive AI tool which can assist language teachers and their students on the long term in the classroom. Anatomy teaching forms a fundamental part in undergraduate medical and dental education. Gross anatomy teaching using post-mortem bodies at the same time causes extensive high infrastructural and personnel resources. Dissection rooms and related mortuary facilities are expensive to operate, hence technical capacities are limited by the logistics involved for providing the basis of high-quality teaching. Virtual tools offer a realistic and immersive learning experience, thereby supporting to better prepare students for their hands-on teaching experience, and hence allowing to enhance the dissection course in an effective way. Furthermore, students can translate their knowledge to other fields in medicine such as radiology or surgery. Even though virtual tools cannot replace hands-on-teaching, it was hypothesized that as a result of using virtual tools accompanying teaching, student learning experience and knowledge gain will be enhanced, thus providing a more effective approach towards teaching delivery. The starting point for the here given project was to evaluate emerging virtual technology with the potential to be deployed in anatomy teaching. We assessed three technical scenarios driven by suitable use cases for individual teaching processes, which will aim to enrich the classical way of anatomy teaching approach by taking advantage of virtual tools. Two scenarios are hybrid, one scenario is virtual asynchronous (but can also be used in a classroom lesson). All three scenarios can also be applied to other fields of science teaching, e.g. engineering teaching by simply replacing the content. In this paper we describe the seven-dimensional use case definition, the technical design of the scenarios and first pilot trials.

Construction of urban road tunnels is very beneficial for traffic conditions in the urban road network, and also allows a better development of urban space. However, the use of tunnels is subjected to a number of technical requirements specified in the relevant legislation. One of them is the demand for effective air exchange to comply with standards for the permissible concentration of harmful substances and good visibility. In shorter tunnels, natural ventilation may be used, with the driving force being the pressure differential at the tunnel portals and the movement of vehicles inside. The paper proposes a theoretical model to estimate the level of pollutants in a tunnel with natural ventilation depending on the traffic condition. The results indicate that although in longer tunnels the installation of a mechanical ventilation system is mandatory, the periods during which natural ventilation alone can provide sufficient internal environmental conditions are relatively long.

The paper discusses developing a new optional course at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), Estonia inspired by international competition focused on autonomous driving algorithms. As a part of the curriculum, the course was designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical skills, fostering interdisciplinary understanding and preparing students for the competition. The course structure combines traditional and active learning methods, emphasizing collaborative group work and independent problem-solving. The course outcomes cover key mechatronics concepts, including control algorithms, feedback systems, and image processing. Students work with a custom mobile platform designed for the course. Feedback indicates positive evaluations of the course content and structure. The course successfully aids students in recognizing interdisciplinary connections of educational mobile robotic platforms within mechatronics, simplifying navigation through the learning process. Challenges identified include the course duration and the fragility of platform components, prompting suggestions for more examples, longer sessions, and platform improvements. The paper concludes that the course achieves its goals, guiding students in recognizing interdisciplinary connections and cultivating a holistic understanding of mechatronics.

The authors present the conceptual and methodological background of a sample survey aimed at identifying the educational needs of class teachers at the secondary level (ISCED 2;ISCED 3) of education in Slovakia. The results of the main phase of the sample survey will be the basis for the design of the content of the Classroom Management course and the related textbook and web portal. The paper summarizes the results of the pilot testing of the developed measurement instrument, the purpose of which was to assess its reliability and to identify suspect items through reliability/item analysis. The overall reliability of the questionnaire was calculated using Cronbach alpha, standardized reliability coefficient and correlation. The results obtained show the high internal consistency of the developed measurement instrument and guarantee a trustworthy research data collection, which will be followed.

The complex history of the South African higher education sector has led to a growing need for universities to engage in humanistic approaches to teaching and learning. This paper discusses ways in which key agents including academics can challenge the status quo in higher education and promote collaborative and transformative practice. Universities in modern society aim to educate and develop students to cope with the complexities of the economy and social change, and to produce new knowledge, while strengthening a commitment to society and democracy. Owing to the current low pass rate of students in the South African higher education sector, there has been a growing call to rethink ways of learning and teaching to ensure greater success for the diverse student body. Students enter university with rich histories, experiences, knowledge, and ways of viewing reality and require enabling environments to develop their identity and succeed at university. The authors acknowledge that students need these supportive spaces to navigate their way through university. Using a collaborative auto-ethnography inquiry approach, we reflect on how our experiences shape our practice in higher education. We value a social constructivist approach where learning is constructed through interaction, and not solely transmitted through instruction. The principles of Communities of Practice (CoP), Paulo Freire's idea of a Humanizing Pedagogy (1970) and ideas on Critical Reflexivity in teaching and learning are adopted as a framework underpinning our reflections. The discussion is located within these tenets to explore the significance of collaborative approaches to teaching and learning in higher education in South Africa, and more specifically in a University of Technology. This paper argues that it is important to authentically engage with practices from the past, reflect on them and look towards future practices to provide quality educational experiences for students.
