Social networks have become a major source for the expression and dissemination of information and news in various languages. Users can express their opinions and sentiments towards different topics through written comments in dialectal languages. The objective of this work is to build a multi-class sentiment analysis model for Tunisian dialect comments scraped from social media websites, based on a lexical ontology and deep learning models. First, we created the TDCOR_Train, a multi-domain Tunisian Arabic dialect dataset. Subsequently, we developed the TDSO lexical ontology, which will be projected to automatically annotate each comment as positive, negative, or neutral. Further-more, we trained four deep learning models, namely Convolutional Neural networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bi-LSTM, and RCNN (RNN + CNN) on the annotated dataset. Both RCNN and Bi-LSTM produced the best results, achieving accuracy rates of 81.27 and 82.01. To assess the performance of our sentiment analysis method, we fine-tuned the bert-base-arabertv02 transfer transformer which returned an accuracy rate of 81.17. Moreover, all models exceeded the accuracy rate of 85.00 when evaluated on two test corpora, the first is TSAC_New, and the second is TSAC_New_TDSO, which is TSAC_New dataset auto-annotated by the TDSO lexical ontology.

This study investigates the proliferation of hate speech on Twitter (now known as X) within the Portuguese-speaking community, utilizing Social Network Analysis (SNA) to examine tweets from 2021 to 2022 flagged for hate speech content. Our analysis, grounded in a dataset annotated for direct and indirect hate speech, offensive speech, and counter-speech, aims to unravel the linguistic patterns and the specific targets of online hate. Employing network science methodologies, we dissect the structural dynamics of these interactions, focusing on the influence of central nodes and the formation of communities that facilitate the spread of hate speech. Key findings highlight a prominent volume of hate speech directed towards minority and vulnerable groups, with significant discourse around LGBT rights, racism, xenophobia, and discrimination against the Roma. The study underscores the critical role of online communities and influencers in the dissemination of hate speech and suggests a pressing need for effective monitoring and intervention strategies. Our research contributes to understanding the complexities of online hate speech and offers insights for developing tools to counteract its spread, aiming to foster a safer and more inclusive online discourse.

Tutorial sessions led by student tutors are an essential part of teaching in large classes to provide personal support and to guide learning. Although universities offer training and educators usually conduct regular meetings to assist tutors, the actual use of technology in tutors’ teaching practice is mostly unknown. This paper presents insights from an online survey (N = 52) to reveal needs and current usage of educational technology in tutors’ teaching practice from different disciplines and universities in Germany. The results show that technology is not widely used to improve their teaching or to gather useful information about their group in a structured way. Additionally, helpful information about the students is not always provided. The potential of educational technology to enhance tutorial sessions remains largely untapped. Technology-driven ideas are discussed. Based on these results, the goal is to develop tailored technology-enhanced support and provide relevant information to tutors in the future. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies presents a significant advancement in enhancing safety in traffic, workplace, and healthcare environments. This study explores the application of AI-driven computer vision algorithms in UAVs to detect and mitigate risks associated with substance abuse, fatigue, and health impairments. Utilizing sophisticated image processing techniques, such as edge detection and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms, drones are equipped to autonomously monitor and analyze ocular characteristics and facial expressions of individuals. The research employs a mobile phone camera and Python-based libraries to conduct real-time assessments, providing critical data to medical and industrial professionals. The study demonstrates the potential of drones to enhance safety by checking sobriety and monitoring worker health. The experimental setup includes a detailed workflow for real-time video detection and facial analysis, leveraging pre-trained models and convolutional neural networks. The results confirm the effectiveness of this approach, highlighting significant progress in AI and UAV technology. Future work aims to transition these innovations from laboratory conditions to practical, real-world applications, continuously enhancing the algorithms and expanding their applicability across various safety-critical scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

We propose two practical procedures to construct fuzzy confidence intervals with fuzzy observations. These procedures use the fuzzy extensions of the quantile function and the concept of fuzzy empirical distribution. With bootstrapping techniques, we first compute fuzzy empirical distributions of the parameter of interest. We then build fuzzy confidence intervals by either finding the fuzzy quantiles of the distribution directly or using the fuzzy quantile function to find the relevant fuzzy quantiles. Our methods are illustrated through a numerical application. We construct fuzzy confidence intervals with the advocated methods and compare them to the fuzzy traditional way of creating such intervals and their construction using the likelihood ratio as in Berkachy and Donze [2].

Digital learning requires specialized archives and websites that guide learners through its structured content, multiple links to archives and additional materials, interactive elements, and knowledge-testing tools. Тhe creation of a website has various stages of design, implementation, testing and administration, including modern standards and guidelines with different orientations. In the last few years, accessibility is also often required in web development, especially for public service sites and educational platforms. In the process of planning and development, we think of the structure, taxonomy, design and functionalities, as well as the specificity of the objects, the learning objectives and the characteristics of the learners. The report presents an analysis of digital archives and training modules related to cultural heritage. Taking into account the specificity of cultural heritage objects through their descriptions and ontologies and good practices for design and accessibility. Several web platforms related to culture and folklore are analyzed with predefined criteria. Specifications for a web-based social-oriented application in the field of education and cultural heritage are systematized. The paper also presents a model for structuring and categorizing the content of a system of developed learning modules. Particular interest is paid to the relationship and correspondence between object metadata and the category structure in the taxonomic model, as well as learning modules in a linear structure and a glossary showing the relationships between terms and lessons. The model includes opportunities for personalization of the training and taking into account various limitations of the visitors - visual, auditory, cognitive, physical, and temporary. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The escalating problem of e-waste, highlighted by projections of its significant increase by 2045, underscores the urgency of integrating sustainable practices into engineering education. This study evaluates the impact of a learner-centered design approach in educational robotics activities on students’ environmental awareness and the development of skills necessary for sustainable product design. On the one hand, this research aimed to develop technical skills and an understanding of ecological design through hands-on activities by involving 82 students in dedicated robotics workshops. The methodology combined quantitative and qualitative data, including surveys and student-produced artefacts, to assess changes in students’ self-efficacy regarding robotics and their understanding of sustainability. The core of the study was to determine how educational robotics could influence students’ knowledge of recycling and sustainable design. On the other hand, the research provided a framework for students to exercise their creativity and design their own potential solutions to solve the E-waste problem and support the SDGs. This research study underscores the effectiveness of a constructivist approach in education, where learning is an active, experiential process that prepares students to meet the demands of contemporary environmental and technological challenges. The findings suggest that such activities enhance creativity and environmental consciousness, with students developing prototypes that address real-world problems. This experiential learning not only improved their self-efficacy in handling technology but also motivated them to become proactive contributors to a sustainable future. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The aim of the study was to evaluate maritime problem-based learning (PBL) and how it can enhance student engagement and competences in maritime education and training. Maritime study programmes are interdisciplinary and must provide both technical and non-technical soft skills for future maritime professionals. PBL as a teaching and learning method can integrate knowledge, skills, and soft skills in real-life tasks, but it can present challenges. PBL performance in maritime courses was evaluated in a project that involved 20 teachers and over 300 students from different maritime courses in the Estonian Maritime Academy. PBL was effective in integrating maritime knowledge and skills, and enhancing students' problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and self-leadership skills. PBL is not the best method for constructing a theoretical knowledge base in maritime. PBL increased students' learning motivation and teachers' collaboration. PBL is a suitable and beneficial teaching and learning method for maritime education and training, as it will prepare future maritime specialists with the competences they need for the industry. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Students’ conceptual difficulties have been characterized in many fields of knowledge. However, the relevant research literature is limited in the case of analog and digital circuits. This gap should be addressed in light of the central role played by electronic circuits in electrical engineering and related disciplines. Therefore, the study aimed to identify undergraduate engineering students’ conceptual difficulties in analog and digital circuits. The study took place at two leading universities in Israel. Over 300 exams in electronic circuits (solved by undergraduate students) were analyzed. Based on this analysis, a list of core concepts in analog and digital circuits that caused conceptual difficulties was generated. In addition, a problem based on these concepts was created. Thirty electrical engineering students who completed introductory courses in electronic circuits were interviewed. In these think-aloud interviews, the students explained the above-mentioned concepts and solved the problem. The data underwent content analysis by two engineering education experts. According to the findings, students’ difficulties are mainly in the basic concepts of operating point, feedback and gain. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
