This paper presents the outcomes of integrating a new course module into the Bachelor Arts Honours Degree Programme in German Studies at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka during the latest curriculum revision in the Faculty of Humanities. Among several new features introduced during this revision including an English Medium taught course module in each academic year, a new course module bearing four credits was introduced to the third year of study on Computer Assisted Language Teaching. Two batches of students have successfully completed this course unit to date. The batch that graduated has already secured employment mainly in the teaching profession. The paper highlights the results of teacher and student feedback as well as the outcomes of the teaching practice sessions conducted for beginners of German as a Foreign Language in the first year. The analysis of data shows a remarkable increase in the confidence of students to plan lessons and perform teaching tasks by integrating digital tools and an enhanced performance during teaching practice sessions paving way for a successful career in teaching German as a Foreign Language.

We consider the prospects of Functional Data Analysis (FDA) methods for statistical inference based on fuzzy data. To make the FDA-based reasoning efficient, we introduce another representation of fuzzy numbers than the traditionally used one, namely ICr functions. To show that the suggested approach can be effective, we propose a new test designed in the spirit of FDA methods, which has been shown to have good statistical properties.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) heavily disrupts engineering education. While it can promote better learning experiences, it can be misused for plagiarism. There are a number of studies promoting the benefits of generative AI but not many of them are focused on how to mitigate the potential misuses, especially in programming. To employ better policies in plagiarism and AI usage for programming, the study compares student perspectives about eleven conventional plagiarism scenarios to AI-assisted plagiarism scenarios. The study invites 87 programming students (CS1, introductory programming and CS2, data structure) as respondents while 66 of them accept the invitation. Respondents see AI assistance comparable to that of a colleague in the context of programming plagiarism. General policies of programming plagiarism can be easily expanded to cover AI-assisted plagiarism. CS1 students think that asking AI to fix troublesome code is more unacceptable than asking a colleague. CS2 students think subscribing to AI service to write the code is less unacceptable than paying a colleague to do so. CS2 students have better awareness of plagiarism in discussing how to approach a task and discussing code. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Challenge-based learning is a dynamic strategy that promotes concept integration by resolving a global, high-impact problem. It encourages/fosters the development of soft skills such as leadership, critical thinking, decision-making, and social and ethical awareness. The Tec-Chihuahua team's participation in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, a unique and innovative approach, has been the flagship project of the Biotechnology Engineering program of Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Chihuahua since 2015. This interdisciplinary project has led to significant achievements, including one bronze medal, three consecutive gold medals, the Best Entrepreneurship Award, and Honorable Mention for Biosafety and Biosecurity. It has also profoundly impacted the development of students’ competencies. The insight survey revealed that participating in the team helped the members acquire leadership skills, adaptability, communication, and decision-making, enhancing their performance as students and professionals and opening doors for their future academic and professional opportunities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Until the early 2020s, conventional face-to-face lectures were the set standard for imparting knowledge to a large crowd of students at universities. However, when the pandemic as a drastic event changed the world overnight, attempts were made to digitize the teaching-learning processes in order to keep teaching going. Arguably, this led to some beneficial new approaches, while several valued teaching elements could not be pursued at least temporarily. Looking back at the pandemic, we investigate what are key factors that determine if students perceive digital media and learning elements as beneficial, and whether and how their significance changed from 2020 to 2023. Answers to these questions might help shaping learning and teaching in a post-pandemic era. To answer these questions, we launched a survey in two waves - one right after the first pandemic term and another one after the first post-pandemic term. For this purpose, student attitudes around topics of digital teaching and online lecturing were queried;among other things, also with regard to their motivation and awareness. As a result, shifts in students' interests in digital teaching-learning settings and their choices in digital learning opportunities can be observed. These findings are used to derive some hypotheses how future teaching concepts might look like that better respond to students' needs.

This paper focuses on creating a dataset in an agricultural domain to understand and analyze sentiments related to pesticides, pests and crop disease. Collecting data allows us to gain insights into the opinions, attitudes, and experiences of farmers, agricultural experts, and consumers. Therefore, we collected data from social media and online platforms based on a list of keywords extracted from the AGROVOC multilingual controlled thesaurus. We have obtained two datasets: the first comprises 1617 tweets regarding pests and crop diseases from Twitter, while the second consists of 10 181 reviews on pesticide products from Amazon. Aspect extraction has been employed, identifying and extracting specific features or aspects discussed in reviews or tweets. This process enables a more granular and detailed data analysis by allowing us to go deeper into the data and understand the sentiment associated with each aspect rather than the overall sentiment. We identified eight aspects within the Amazon dataset, including "price", "package", "toxicity", etc. Similarly, we extracted relevant aspects from our Twitter dataset, resulting in five aspects such as: "pests", "safety", "toxicity", etc. Then, the data will be pre-annotated in collaboration with agricultural domain experts from INAT. This data will be used for future analyses and will inform the purchasing decisions of various decision-makers.

This study addresses the inadequate integration of Sustainable Development Goals in architectural engineering education. Current programs often prioritize technical skills, neglecting the broader societal and environmental implications of architectural and engineering practices. To bridge this gap, this research proposes a framework that leverages design studio activities, incorporating an integrated design process and an analytical mapping tool. This framework was implemented in two undergraduate design projects, guiding students to identify relevant SDGs, assess integration levels, and incorporate appropriate design features. The findings underscore the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world application for enriching curricula and aligning with the global SDGs outlined in Agenda 2030. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In the context of digitization of education, it is important to take into account not only the individual characteristics of students, but also their abilities and skills in using technology. Therefore, there is a need to develop an optimal strategy for supporting students in a virtual learning environment. The purpose of the research is to develop the effective strategies that will help students to adapt successfully to virtual learning and achieve high results. This involves studying the needs and challenges faced by students in a virtual learning environment, analysis of the existing support strategies and their efficiency in virtual learning, and modification of the existing support strategies, taking into account the unique features of the virtual learning environment, as well as using artificial intelligence tools. Based on the analysis of existing support strategies and determination of their effectiveness in virtual learning, the authors substantiated the methodological features and requirements for the development of student support strategies in the virtual learning environment. The study of effective methods of adapting the educational content for the online format and the conditions for building strategies to support students in the process of learning the material was conducted. The analysis of the possibilities of online support for students, including remote advisory support, online resources, and other forms of support, was conducted. The importance of constant monitoring and updating of support strategies is determined, taking into consideration the dynamism of the educational digital environment.

The overall objective of this research is to reduce the high drop-out rates observed during the first semester of the engineering program Product Development and Robotics at School of Engineering. The study commenced by delineating the specific reasons for individual student withdrawals, subsequently identifying those factors directly related to the academic process, including both the formal and informal structures of the courses offered in the first semester, as well as the course content. The aim was to identify gaps that could be rectified to maintain the engagement and motivation of students who are inclined to persist, thereby facilitating their ability to meet program requirements in a timely manner. Concurrently, the research conducted a more thorough examination of foundational courses, such as higher mathematics and physics, which are frequently cited by students as reasons for discontinuing their studies. In the context of this experiment, feedback was systematically gathered from students across all courses before the implementation of CDIO, identifying the core challenges encountered in foundational courses, the implementation phase concentrated on physics – one of the two principal foundational courses alongside higher mathematics. By incorporating the CDIO recommendations, along with other pedagogical enhancements, into physics course, significant advancements were achieved in terms of student pass rates. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This article advocates for a student-centric approach in instructional design, proposing integrating user experience (UX) design principles into curricula development. This integration aims to enhance the effectiveness of curricula, particularly in the design of individual learning units (LUs). Traditionally, curricula are built using a top-down approach, prioritising stakeholder input and educational standards. However, this can lead to LUs obstructing student learning due to a disconnect between their intended purpose and student experience. The author proposes a method for evaluating LU quality based on student experience to address this. This method utilises student journey maps to assess how well the curriculum aligns with student expectations throughout their learning journey. By pinpointing areas where student needs aren’t being met, the journey maps reveal opportunities for improvement in curriculum design. The pilot study’s results suggest that the method can effectively identify areas for improvement, making it a valuable tool for educators to enhance their teaching practices. This practical application of UX design methodologies in instructional design significantly contributes to the field by demonstrating their value in improving the quality and effectiveness of curricula. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
