In computer science education, various teaching and learning methods exist to teach novice students programming. However, students' source code primarily serves as the basis for grading. Usually, it is not considered to identify key concepts and skills required to complete the course and understand the student's learning process. This paper presents a system that automatically analyzes source code and identifies the most relevant concepts for first-semester students to pass a university-level programming course. This system uses different tools to detect errors and vulnerabilities, calculate metrics, and generate 55 code-related features from the students' source codes. The source code submissions of 1,346 students in two cohorts have been considered. Further, an expert study evaluated which of those features can be assigned to concrete programming concepts and how relevant these concepts are for programming education. Furthermore, we used machine learning methods to analyze the most challenging concepts, where students tend to produce the highest number of errors during their learning process. Our findings indicate that understanding and applying dynamic memory significantly impacts the students' course success. This study provides empirical evidence of the most important programming concepts in C within the CS1 course. Educators can use these results to optimize teaching materials and increase assistance for challenging and crucial concepts, which might reduce the student dropout rate. Our approach further shows how a code-driven approach can be used to analyze a university-level programming course and get insights into its academic success.

This study evaluates the entrepreneurial mindset (EM) among Indian engineering students and assesses the effectiveness of existing measurement frameworks in the Indian context. EM is recognized as a valuable asset for engineering students, enabling them to tackle global challenges and gain a competitive advantage. Incorporating entrepreneurship education is a common practice worldwide to cultivate EM in learners. However, assessing EM development is challenging due to its complexity. The study applies EM measurement frameworks, validated in Western education systems, to assess EM of engineering students at a small private university in India. Quantitative assessments through online surveys are conducted at various points in the students' engineering course through first and second year of engineering. This study recognizes the significance of measuring entrepreneurial mindset in preparing engineering students to address contemporary engineering challenges and foster such mindset for creating innovative solutions. To enhance the EM, it was found necessary to evaluate it in terms of students' self-reported values for parameters such as growth mindset, altruism, empathy, help-seeking, ideation, interest, open-mindedness, entrepreneurial interest, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy arising in Indian educational ecosystem context. This research thus seeks to provide insights into the EM of UG engineering students at a small university in North India, while discussing the applicability of existing EM measurement frameworks to this research.

This paper presents the results of a new teaching approach applied to a postgraduate programme conducted at a state university in Sri Lanka. The study reviews the change of teaching approaches from the onsite delivery to virtual learning during the pandemic and how it evolved in the post-pandemic era. Albeit remote learning was imperative during the pandemic, the universities were given the flexibility to decide on the mode of delivery and redesign their teaching approaches once the world returned to new normal. With the novel experience gained through virtual teaching and learning during Covid-19, higher education institutions across the world did not fully return to analogue teaching as before. The numerous advantages of virtual delivery resulted in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes continuing with the online teaching or adopting the blended mode. This study presents the results of conducting Master of Arts in Linguistics programme in different modes, how the teaching approaches changed over the years during pre-pandemic, pandemic as well as post-pandemic eras. The research design contained mixed method approach which included a survey and recorded feedback obtained during the sessions. The new learner centred approach adopted during the post-pandemic times yielded more benefits and positive feedback when analysing the survey results and the comments given by the students.

High dropout rates are a common challenge in higher education, particularly in computer science degree programs. These dropouts impede our ability to produce a greater number of graduates in this highly demanded field due to the limitation of the capacity of students enrolled in the first semester. Identifying the reasons behind dropout is a complex task, as the individuals involved are often inaccessible or unwilling to reflect on their lack of success. This paper aims to investigate the factors contributing to dropout rates in computer science degree programs. Through a comprehensive literature survey and qualitative interviews, we have identified the underlying causes of dropout in our computer science bachelor's degree program. Our findings reveal a range of reasons, with time constraints and misaligned expectations of the degree program emerging as the most frequently mentioned factors in our interviews. Based on these insights, we present several recommendations aimed at reducing the dropout rate.

Experimentation in physics and engineering is undeniably vital for improving the understanding of physical laws and engaging students in the scientific process. Following the guidelines established by the American Association of Physics Teachers, the objectives of introducing students to the physics laboratory include teaching them the art of experimentation, fostering analytical and experimental skills, developing conceptual knowledge, establishing the foundations of physics knowledge, and cultivating collaborative learning abilities. This study aims to demonstrate the implementation of a light laboratory designed for K-5 and K-6 students, as well as educators. Apart of the laboratory materials was presented to science teachers through a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). The findings from both laboratories are evaluated based on the comprehension of fundamental laws of light by teachers and students. The educators who participated in the course implemented the experiments in their classrooms and introduced their students to the culture of experimental physics. This research suggests that the educational process of designing an online course on the topic of light can offer original experimental and educational ideas to science teachers, which can be readily tested in classrooms and shared within the broader Physics and Engineering Education community. Specifically, the objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of incorporating innovative learning approaches, such as hands-on experimental teaching using the learning-by-doing method, across essential curricular areas. The students who participated in the online lab gained a deep understanding of the concepts taught in light and optics and were able to successfully apply these concepts.

Digitization and networking have rapidly advanced across society and the economy, necessitating an increase in students' acquisition of theoretical and technical skills. Information and communication technology systems and technologies, along with their applications, have fundamentally changed in recent decades. Consequently, engineering didactics and education must reflect these changes. Traditional teaching approaches in fields like electrical and communication engineering involve specialized hardware and measurement technology, as well as data acquisition and statistical processing for immersive education. Remote teaching enables asynchronous learning, accommodating individual student needs. The Digital Learning and Teaching Fund at TU Dresden supports the deployment of digital teaching solutions. Data analysis and evaluation can be conducted using shared pre-recorded datasets. However, data acquisition remains crucial in remote learning environments. To address this, our project focuses on developing a system that utilizes off-the-shelf smartphones for sensor data collection and subsequent computer-based analysis. This approach harnesses the advanced sensor technology and open data interfaces available in modern smartphones, which has already been successfully employed in various teaching contexts, primarily in straightforward physics experiments.

Fluid mechanics courses cover energy and flow distribution problems, which are important in various industries. Pressure loss calculation due to friction in pipe elements is crucial in hydraulic design. Therefore, teaching must stimulate students' understanding of the design and calculation of different scenarios presented along their career, starting in the classroom, followed in some cases by research and/or industrial scenarios. In this work, a tool called UiT Pipeline Designer Calculator or UiT-PDC is created to demonstrate the calculation of pressure losses and highlight the similarities and differences of these scenarios. The UiT-PDC uses MS Excel as the platform for the calculations. It utilises two frequently used theoretical models, namely the Darcy-Weisbach and Hazen-Williams, as well as three distinct standards that correspond to the oil industry, water distribution, and ventilation (NORSOK, AWWA, and ASRHAE, respectively) to design and compare the losses present in a given pipeline system. The students must input the diameter and relative roughness of the pipe to evaluate, together with the type of fluid in hand. After selecting the different models (theoretical and/or standards), the tool graphically shows the errors among the different models used, along with the pressure losses in the system, allowing the user to analyse the differences obtained for the design. With this tool, the students can be introduced to the use of the standards as an extra step in the design process earlier, as they learn about the concepts of fluid mechanics.

This study employs a basic qualitative approach, analyzing two case studies in which the State Islamic Religious Council (SIRC) is the sole trustee of legitimate state waqf assets. Is there a significant difference in the management of these two waqf hotels, as far as the organization that manages them? This study also explores the connection between waqf principles and hotel management, with a particular emphasis on the distribution of waqf benefits generated by the waqf hotel business. The goal is to investigate different perspectives on decision-making, challenges, and achievements in the sector. A semi-structured interview was conducted with two representatives from SIRC and one from Yayasan Wakaf Malaysia (YWM), both of whom manage waqf hotels. This research is guided by the principles of Fiqh Al-Awlawiyyat, which provides a thorough understanding of Islamic legal principles governing waqf and contemporary hotel management. Two waqf hotels have been chosen for a review of the management style and ownership structure using the criteria that have been established. Interview data was thematically analyzed to identify recurring patterns and gain valuable insights. Preliminary findings demonstrate the importance of community support for this waqf hotel to optimize profits. Muslims bear a great deal of responsibility if they understand that the money, they spend to stay at this waqf hotel is for the benefit of third parties in need of assistance. This study makes practical recommendations for improving the sustainability and effectiveness of waqf hotels;ongoing promotion and awareness should be prioritized. Muslims must understand that choosing a waqf hotel is a responsibility, not an option.
