Despite some of the success of AI, particularly machine learning, in industrial applications such as condition monitoring, quality inspection and asset control, solutions are typically bespoke and not robust in the long term. There is a considerable amount of effort in developing these solutions to deliver accurate results within a very limited scenario. In addition, the operationalisation of these models in the factory floor is a challenge. Developing and maintaining these models requires of data science expert knowledge and the digital skills gap in the manufacturing industry is a major barrier. A step towards the development of AI skills can be facilitated in a Learning Factory environment, provided there is a way for operators to develop an understanding of how manufacturing problems can be addressed with different data science tools. To address this, this paper introduces a semantic based framework as one of the key elements to facilitate the development of Industrial AI solutions. By formalising the way data, manufacturing processes and AI models are described and linked before and after the creation of a solution, it is possible not only to automate model creation, but to enable reusability and management. A preliminary conceptualisation on the use of this framework through a process monitoring scenario is presented. By capturing the semantic relationships, it is possible to support a more automated machine learning pipeline, enable manufacturers to understand how solutions can be created and learn how they can then be reused in future similar scenarios.

The traffic flow and traffic flow at suburban intersections are complex and difficult to control. Effective analysis of traffic at intersections and continuous optimization of signal timing is important means to ensure orderly traffic at suburban intersections. Taking the typical Zijin intersection at the south end of Hefei as an example, the video monitoring system at the intersection carries out traffic survey and data analysis on vehicle speed, vehicle density, delay, etc., and designs a more reasonable signal timing scheme for the suburban intersection, which can effectively improve the traffic efficiency at the peak hours of the intersection. The research method and design scheme can promote the traffic research of similar suburban intersections and have certain reference significance for alleviating traffic congestion on suburban roads.

With the outbreak of the Covid-19, many countries had to interrupt in-person trainings and the adoption of online learning accelerated dramatically. Distance education shifted from an opportunity to a need, and the lack of innovative digital content, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), became apparent. In this context, in this paper we introduce the EU2AI project, funded in the framework of the Erasmus + programme, with the aim to address these challenges and contribute to the development of digital learning materials and tools, specifically focused on AI education.

Synthetic data for training deep neural networks is increasingly used in computer vision. Several strategies, such as domain randomization or domain adaptation (sim2real), exist to bridge the domain gap between synthetic training data and the real application. We compare different image transformation models, such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), to adapt the synthetic images to some real-world examples. Our focus is on the transfer capability and the consistency of the annotations. We investigate the influence of different augmentation strategies on the transformation capability. Our study is exemplified by an industrial quality assurance use case. We show that especially a strong translational augmentation is a key for a successful sim2real transfer using GANs. Trained on a transformed dataset, our object detectors achieve an almost equivalent performance compared to real-world data. Based on the industrial use case, we even prove the superiority of synthetic image data for quality assurance.

Learning Factories (LF) are already considered as a fostering factor for wealth creation in any nation through obtaining promising environment for education, training and research, especially in manufacturing related areas. In the era of crises and transitions, manufacturing enterprises are facing diverse challenges and thus need to build up intellectual assets and capacities, inter alia, with regard to digitalization and AI, sustainability, productivity and organizational excellence. From global perspective, the problems are even deeper when it comes to the countries that are not that developed. Not supportive environment there, makes the creating a LF quite a challengeable task. This paper presents the efforts regarding the development of a LF in Skopje, the first Macedonian learning factory, named as Smart Learning Factory - Skopje (SLFS). The core interest of SLFS is Lean4.0. SLFS is envisioned as i) a showroom to discover new technologies for Lean and Industry 4.0, ii) training center for (up-/re-)skilling of (future) workforces, iii) laboratory for experimenting with new technologies and scenarios, and iv) a development hub for integrated solutions for the industry. This paper additionally emphases on the focal points of SLFS, i.e. Digital Lean. It is a software tool that pretends to help Lean implementation by aiding the performance of some basic Lean tools, both in case of initial and more mature Lean implementation.

Given the increasing adoption of Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICTs) in teaching practices, it is observed that there are still practices that do not fully benefit from the culture of sharing and reusing Digital Educational Resources (DERs) available on the internet. In this study, a new repository integrated into a lesson planning support platform was developed and evaluated. To assess the efficacy of the repository, a semi-structured interview, and the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire were used, aiming to measure usability. The results indicated satisfactory usability, with an average score of 86.96. When asked about the utility of the repository, participants perceived that the system positively contributes to the reuse of educational resources in the classroom.

In this study, we introduce an innovative Q-learning and Ant Colony Optimization algorithms for solving the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Given that an optimal tour for the TSP does not contain cross-edges, our approaches focus on minimizing the number of cross-edges in the tour. Experiments on TSPLIB instances, of sizes between 51 and 159, show the effectiveness of these approaches and highlight the rapid convergence to better solutions compared to classical methods based direct minimization the tour length.

The current paper outlines a proposal for an IP (Integral Proportional) self-tuning regulator that uses the fuzzy logic controller by adjusting its proportional gain, to enhance the regulation of the speed of the induction machine through the use of a Direct Torque Control (DTC) strategy. The suggested self-tuning mechanism has the capability to adapt one gain, set against the two gains required for a PI-self-tuning controller. The effectiveness or efficiency of the previously mentioned controller was evaluated against that of a traditional IP controller and a fuzzy PI controller (Proportional Integral) in relation to time response, tracking performance, and disturbance rejection capability. All simulations outcomes ac-quired through the utilization of Simulink and fuzzy tools within MATLAB software for an induction machine with a power rating of 1.5 KW showed excellent performances as well as verified the effectiveness of this controller.

In this paper, we introduce a new image encryption algorithm to encrypt gray-scale images. We will use the Arnold Cat map in the confusion part to change the position of each pixel from the original gray-scale image, then we use an external secret key of 160 bits and a double one-dimension (1D) chaotic maps (Chebyshev map), those maps generate two images with identical dimensions as the original gray-scale image, after that, we apply the XOR operation to all generated images. Experiments and security analysis show the value and quality of the proposed approach in terms of accuracy and strength against several attacks.

As the adoption of microgrids increases, optimizing their operation to improve energy efficiency and reliability remains challenging, especially given the unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources and varying load demands. This study aims to develop an improved equilibrium optimizer (IEO) for the optimal scheduling of a microgrid integrated with various distributed energy resources (DERs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS), aiming to reduce total generation cost. The IEO incorporates simple quadratic interpolation to improve the search capabilities of the original equilibrium optimizer (EO). This research examines three scenarios involving a typical grid-connected microgrid over a 24-hour period. The results demonstrate that generation costs are significantly lower in the case of active grid participation. Furthermore, the IEO method outperforms other approaches across all scenarios, evidencing its superior efficacy in identifying the cost-effective generation strategy for the microgrid.
