"Chinese + Tourism" is an important subfield of the current research area of "Chinese +" vocational education. This article focuses on the vocational skills training of "Chinese + Tourism", targeting both domestic and foreign tourism practitioners. To accomplish this goal, a Chinese tourism corpus was constructed, and a series of methods including text classification, relevant word frequency theory, vocabulary distribution range, and term frequency-inverse document frequency were employed to design a technical word list construction process. Through human intervention, a sequenced Chinese Tourism Technical Word List (CTTWL) containing 542 words has been developed. This word list is mainly composed of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, with a coverage rate of 11.05% in domain texts. Compared to the HSK (Tourism), although its text coverage rate is 16.59%, it includes 4,674 vocabulary words. In addition, the coverage rate of CTTWL in general texts is less than 1%, indicating that the word list developed in this article covers most professional vocabulary in the text with fewer words. CTTWL can provide vocabulary references for Chinese tour guide training, and tourism Chinese skills teaching and learning.

The surge of online education via e-learning platforms offers flexibility but raises concerns about the uniform presentation of content, lacking the personalized touch of traditional teaching. These concerns become particularly significant when considering neurodiversity, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) being a noteworthy example. ASD, a neurodevelopmental disorder, significantly impacts social interaction, behavior, and communication, especially pragmatic skills. Given the autistic inclination for logical and consistent thinking, coupled with the challenge of intuitive understanding compromising communication effectiveness, we argue that computational solutions serve as ideal tools for developing language and social skills. This survey delves into existing literature on intelligent technologies designed to support personalized education in linguistic development for children and adolescents with ASD level 1. Our findings reveal a gap in intelligent technologies that specifically target linguistic development, focusing on pragmatic language and the social use of the language for individuals with ASD level 1. The growing population of these students emphasizes the need for incorporating intelligent technologies to personalize education and address specific challenges they face. This serves as a crucial contribution to effective inclusion, tackling unique hurdles in linguistic and social learning.

Language models operating on discrete audio representations are increasingly becoming the go-to framework for many speech-processing tasks. Recently, discrete embeddings of the fundamental frequency (F0), have been shown to improve performance across a variety of tasks. However, the benefits of using F0 embeddings can only be as good as the embeddings themselves. Therefore, in this paper, we present an exhaustive study on using the Vector-Quantized Variational Autoencoder (VQ-VAE) to generate high-quality embeddings of the F0 curve. We experiment with various input transformations that focus on handling unvoiced regions of the F0, which are regions where F0 is not defined. For each transformation, we perform an exhaustive grid search over the embedding size and codebook size parameters, in order to achieve highest possible embedding quality. Our experiments are conducted on two different-sized datasets, LJSpeech and LibriTTS, and, in total, comprise over 140 different experiment settings. We reach results ranging from 0.53% to 4.29% F0 Frame Error (FFE), depending on the dataset and preprocessing strategy used, and we publish our best models on the Hugging-Face website.

Spell-checkers are valuable tools that enhance communication by identifying misspelled words in written texts. Recent improvements in deep learning, and in particular in large language models, have opened new opportunities to improve traditional spell-checkers with new functionalities that not only assess spelling correctness but also the suitability of a word for a given context. In our work, we present and compare two new spell-checkers and evaluate them on synthetic, learner, and more general-domain Slovene datasets. The first spell-checker is a traditional, fast, word-based approach, based on a morphological lexicon with a significantly larger word list compared to existing spell-checkers. The second approach uses a language model trained on a large corpus with synthetically inserted errors. We present the training data construction strategies, which turn out to be a crucial component of neural spellcheckers. Further, the proposed neural model significantly outperforms all existing spell-checkers for Slovene in both precision and recall.

Background: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has identified Controlled Flight IntoTerrain (CFIT), Runway Excursion (RE), Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I), Mid-Air Collision (MAC), and Runway Incursion (RI) as the five core risks in the 2020-2022 Global Aviation Safety Plan. Airbus mentioned in the 2022 Commercial Aviation Accident Statistical Analysis Report that the top three causes of fatal accidents in the past 20 years were Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I), Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), and Runway Excursion (RE), with CFIT accounting for 17% of the total, which is the second most fatal type of accident. Therefore, it is crucial to study the causation of CFIT accidents to reduce the fatal accident rate of airlines and improve the safety management level. However, the existing accident causation analysis methods are highly generalized and lack human factor causation analysis for CFIT accidents;moreover, the existing human factor causation analysis indexes are mostly descriptive indexes and lack data indexes. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to summarize the human factor causation pattern of CFIT accidents by analyzing historical CFIT accident investigation reports;combine with the flight data monitoring indicators, further refine the analysis level on the basis of the existing causation analysis methods, and put forward an optimized human factor analysis method based on the flight data of CFIT, so as to provide assistance for the safe and efficient operation of the safety company. Methods: First, a total of 73 CFIT accidents from 2008 to 2021 were collected and counted, and the investigation reports of the 73 CFIT accidents were analyzed in two dimensions, horizontal and vertical, using the SHELL model and the HFACS model. The horizontal dimension refers to the human-aircraft-environmental-management causal factors based on the SHELL model, and the vertical dimension refers to the human factors causal factors based on the HFACS

Narrative essays enable students to express their thoughts and feelings, gain diverse perspectives, understand themselves and their world more deeply, and enhance their literary skills and cultural awareness. As such, it became a relevant textual production in educational settings. However, assessing these texts is challenging and time-intensive. Therefore, this study focuses on developing an automatic detection system for narrative structures in essays, using a range of natural language processing algorithms, including machine learning, deep learning, and large language models. The study found that BERT was more effective than other models for this task, highlighting GPT's potential in extracting narrative structures. The findings of this study have implications for educational practices, particularly in the assessment and improvement of narrative writing skills among middle school students.

We conducted a 2 x 2 study comparing the digital learning game Decimal Point to a comparable non-game tutor with or without self-explanation prompting. We expected to replicate previous studies showing the game improved learning compared to the non-game tutor, and that self-explanation prompting would enhance learning across platforms. Additionally, prior research with Decimal Point suggested that self-explanation was driving gender differences in which girls learned more than boys. To better understand these effects, we manipulated the presence of self-explanation prompts and incorporated a multidimensional gender measure. We hypothesized that girls and students with stronger feminine-typed characteristics would learn more than boys and students with stronger masculine-typed characteristics in the game with self-explanation condition, but not in the game without self-explanation or in the non-game conditions. Results showed no advantage for the game over the non-game or for including self-explanation, but an analysis of hint usage indicated that students in the game conditions used (and abused) hints more than in the non-game conditions, which in turn was associated with worse learning outcomes. When we controlled for hint use, students in the game conditions learned more than students in the non-game tutor. We replicated a gender effect favoring boys and students with masculine-typed characteristics on the pretest, but there were no gender differences on the posttests. Finally, results indicated that the multidimensional framework explained variance in pretest performance better than a binary gender measure, adding further evidence that this framework may be a more effective, inclusive approach to understanding gender effects in game-based learning.

In the usual human cognitive performance, the speed of the human-computer interaction is not critical, but in emergent technologies and in a high stream of information in a learning process, a human (learner) ability to process teaching tasks can be limited by the human abilities or lead to this human's stress as a physiological "cost" of his/her successful performance. The goal of the paper is to carry out the comparison analysis of the speed and reliability of cognitive activity by subjects performing computer tasks at a free and fixed pace, considering the physiological "cost" of such activities to reveal potential preliminary markers of stress. We have studied 4 group of indices of subjects' cognitive test performance: 1) operational - test performance including direct indices (rate of tasks solving, reliability) and their secondary indices including general productivity;2) subjective test indices before and after test performance;3) physiological support of activity by indices of the cardiovascular system;4) indices of electropuncture diagnostics. Besides, to account external factors of possible influence on a human cognitive work, we used indices of the solar wind and geomagnetic field. The time limitations make a human more sensitive to external physical factors and influence his psychological state in addition to physiological regulation that can be considered as a stress condition of activity. This result has confirmed our guess that multimodal description is more effective to reveal a stress during cognitive activity of a simple nature.

Like other policy texts, language policy texts also need policy text analysis. Leveraging a corpus of 100 policy documents, this study investigates various linguistic attributes, including the distribution of parts of speech, type-token ratio, and lexical density, through data comparative analysis. Furthermore, the paper categorizes the corpus into twelve distinct types, encompassing instructions, decisions, notices, reports, regulations, ways, rules, methods, summaries, plans, speeches and papers. Employing natural language processing techniques, the study also utilizes frequency statistics and wordclouds to provide both word frequency statistical tables and visual wordcloud representations of the Mongolian language policy text corpus.

Large open-source projects such as the Linux kernel provide a unique opportunity to analyze many of the socio-technical processes of open-source software development. Understanding how cognitive workload affects the quality of code and productivity of work in such environments can help better protect open-source projects from potential vulnerabilities and better utilize limited developer resources. In this paper, we present two agent-based simulation models of developer interactions on the Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML). We also develop several non-simulation machine learning (ML) models predicting patch reversal, to compare with our agent-based simulation models. In our experiments, simulation models perform slightly better than ML models at predicting the expected number and proportion of reverted patches, and considerably better in matching the distribution of these values. Results are further improved using an explicit process model within the simulation, modeling the patch view process and associated cognitive load on LKML reviewers when new code changes are introduced by developers. We find that the process model can capture the repeated, structured multi-agent activities within a socio-technical community.
