In order to accurately assess the pre-shift competence of controllers, the thesis formulates eight assessment indicators affecting the pre-shift status of controllers based on the actual working conditions of controllers, the contents of pre-shift questioning and the existing research results. According to the partial correlation analysis, the rationality of the selected indicators is proved. Theweights of the eight assessment indicators were determined by the entropy weight-CRITIC combination method, and the relative relevance of the indicators affecting the pre-shift status was further determined by applying the improved gray correlation theory, and the pre-shift status of the controllers was sorted according to the size of the relative relevance, and differentiated into three grades. Grade 1 controllers had the highest pre-shift status correlation, which indicated that they had the best pre-shift status and were able to carry out control work smoothly;Grade 2 controllers had medium pre-shift status correlation, which was affected by their age and long posting, and had average pre-shift status;Grade 3 controllers had the smallest pre-shift status correlation, which indicated that they were young and had short posting, and had average control ability and higher psychological pressure.

Classroom observation protocols standardize the assessment of teaching effectiveness and facilitate comprehension of classroom interactions. Whereas these protocols offer teachers specific feedback on their teaching practices, the manual coding by human raters is resource-intensive and often unreliable. This has sparked interest in developing AI-driven, cost-effective methods for automating such holistic coding. Our work explores a multimodal approach to automatically estimating encouragement and warmth in classrooms, a key component of the Global Teaching Insights (GTI) study's observation protocol. To this end, we employed facial and speech emotion recognition with sentiment analysis to extract interpretable features from video, audio, and transcript data. The prediction task involved both classification and regression methods. Additionally, in light of recent large language models' remarkable text annotation capabilities, we evaluated ChatGPT's zero-shot performance on this scoring task based on transcripts. We demonstrated our approach on the GTI dataset, comprising 367 16-min video segments from 92 authentic lesson recordings. The inferences of GPT-4 and the best-trained model yielded correlations of r = .341 and r = .441 with human ratings, respectively. Combining estimates from both models through averaging, an ensemble approach achieved a correlation of r = .513, comparable to human inter-rater reliability. Our model explanation analysis indicated that text sentiment features were the primary contributors to the trained model's decisions. Moreover, GPT-4 could deliver logical and concrete reasoning as potential teacher guidelines. Our findings provide insights into using multimodal techniques for automated classroom observation, aiming to foster teacher training through frequent and valuable feedback.

The problem of interpretation on implicit negation is a difficult problem in cross language translation, second language acquisition, and dictionary interpretation. This paper finds that expectations are the key to interpreting implicit negations. Unlike explicit negative expectations, implicit negative expectations are represented as conventionalized experiences, rules, etc., and syntactically expressed as " (sic)(should).". Taking implicit negative compound nouns as an example, there are three kinds of conventionalized expectations implied in compound nouns, namely Gestalt expectations, criterion expectations, and ability expectations. Based on these expectations, this paper establishes three interpretation modes for implicit negative nouns. Such as "((sic)).. ((should *** actually) doesn't have)." and "((sic)).. ((should be able to. but actually) can't).". Emphasizing and supplementing the expected meaning of implicit negation can not only improve the dictionary interpretations, but also reduce the difficulty of cross language translation and improve the efficiency of second language teaching.

In qualitative data analysis, codebooks offer a systematic framework for establishing shared interpretations of themes and patterns. While the utility of codebooks is well-established in educational research, the manual process of developing and refining codes that emerge bottom-up from data presents a challenge in terms of time, effort, and potential for human error. This paper explores the potentially transformative role that could be played by Large Language Models (LLMs), specifically ChatGPT (GPT-4), in addressing these challenges by automating aspects of the codebook development process. We compare four approaches to codebook development - a fully manual approach, a fully automated approach, and two approaches that leverage ChatGPT within specific steps of the codebook development process. We do so in the context of studying transcripts from math tutoring lessons. The resultant four codebooks were evaluated in terms of whether the codes could reliably be applied to data by human coders, in terms of the human-rated quality of codes and codebooks, and whether different approaches yielded similar or overlapping codes. The results show that approaches that automate early stages of codebook development take less time to complete overall. Hybrid approaches (whether GPT participates early or late in the process) produce codebooks that can be applied more reliably and were rated as better quality by humans. Hybrid approaches and a fully human approach produce similar codebooks;the fully automated approach was an outlier. Findings indicate that ChatGPT can be valuable for improving qualitative codebooks for use in AIED research, but human participation is still essential.

Several studies have shown Parkinson's disease (PD) can be detected from speech signals. However, most of them focus on clean speech recorded under controlled noise environments and standardized equipment, which may limit their ease of access and application in realistic scenarios. In this study, we analyze the performance of PD detection models when a modified version of the ORCA-CLEAN denoiser is applied. The denoiser was re-trained on human speech to clean noisy pathological speech signals before the classification stage. The residual signals were explored to determine whether the denoising process effectively removes unwanted noise while preserving essential speech features related to the disease and therefore relevant to PD detection. The experiments were conducted using recordings of the PC-GITA database along with replicas of it created by adding different levels of artificial noise. The results demonstrate remarkable robustness in classification accuracy despite high levels of added noise. These findings suggest that integrating denoising techniques into the PD classification pipeline can lead to reliable and accurate results even under non-ideal environments. These results will potentially lead to more accessible technology with application in real-world scenarios.

The purpose of this paper is to establish the safety operation evaluation standard of remote towers and provide reference for the safety evaluation of remote tower technology. From the perspective of human ergonomics, this paper takes the controllers of Qiandaohu General Airport in Jiande, China as an example to compare and analyze whether there are significant differences between the controllers inworkload, allocation of attention and situational awareness under two different control modes: remote tower and traditional physical tower. The results showed that Mean HR, SDNN, RMSSD and pNN50 had no significant difference in the time-domain indexes of heart rate variability and total mental load when the controllers of Jiande Airport carried out control and command tasks under two different control modes. There were significant differences in the number of fixation points, the average fixation duration, and the average saccade duration. In the SART scale of situational awareness, there were significant differences in the four dimensions of situational complexity, situational variability, mental arousal, and the quantity of acquired information, while there were no significant differences in the other dimensions and the total score. Therefore, the experimental results measured at Jiande Airport in China validate the validity of the research method used in this paper, and the safety evaluation criteria established provides a reference indexmeasurementmethod for future studies on remote tower operation safety related to human ergonomics at other airports in China.

Automatic term extraction (ATE) is a natural language processing (NLP) task that reduces the effort of manually identifying terms from domain-specific corpora by providing a list of candidate terms. This paper summarizes our research on the applicability of open and closed-sourced large language models (LLMs) on the ATE task compared to two benchmarks where we consider ATE as sequence-labeling (iobATE) and seq2seq ranking (templATE) tasks, respectively. We propose three forms of prompting designs, including (1) sequence-labeling response;(2) text-extractive response;and (3) filling the gap of both types by text-generative response. We conduct experiments on the ACTER corpora in three languages and four domains with two different gold standards: one includes only terms (ANN) and the other covers both terms and entities (NES). Our empirical inquiry unveils that above all the prompting formats, text-extractive responses, and text-generative responses exhibit a greater ability in the few-shot setups when the amount of training data is scarce, and surpasses the performance of the templATE classifier in all scenarios. The performance of LLMs is close to fully supervised sequence-labeling ones, and it offers a valuable trade-off by eliminating the need for extensive data annotation efforts to a certain degree. This demonstrates LLMs' potential use within pragmatic, real-world applications characterized by the constricted availability of labeled examples.

RAG-based models have gained significant attention in recent times mainly due to their ability to address some of the key challenges like mitigation hallucination, incorporation of knowledge from external sources and traceability in the reasoning process. While numerous works in the textual domain leverage additional knowledge to enhance performance, the adaptability of RAG-based models in the speech domain remains largely unexplored. This approach is particularly well-suited for transport applications, where there is a constant change in the schedule and the model needs to be aware of these changes to provide updated information to users. The datasets for such tasks are lacking, and the applicability of language models in the transport domain remains underexplored. In this work, we try to address these problems by exploiting pretrained large language models to generate a synthetic dataset for transport applications. We also utilize the pretrained language models to evaluate the performance of our cascaded RAG system. The experimental results revealed that our approach is less prone to hallucination and can generate grammatically correct responses to user queries.

The process of generating challenging and appropriate distractors for multiple-choice questions is a complex and time-consuming task. Existing methods for an automated generation have limitations in proposing challenging distractors, or they fail to effectively filter out incorrect choices that closely resemble the correct answer, share synonymous meanings, or imply the same information. To overcome these challenges, we propose a comprehensive toolkit that integrates various approaches for generating distractors, including leveraging a general knowledge base and employing a T5 LLM. Additionally, we introduce a novel strategy that utilizes natural language inference to increase the accuracy of the generated distractors by removing confusing options. Our models have zero-shot capabilities and achieve good results on the DGen dataset;moreover, the models were fine-tuned and outperformed state-of-the-art methods on the considered dataset. To further extend the analysis, we introduce human annotations with scores for 100 test questions with 1085 distractors in total. The evaluations indicated that our generated options are of high quality, surpass all previous automated methods, and are on par with the ground truth of human-defined alternatives.

A large body of research has highlighted the impact of culture on cognitive, affective and motivational phenomena associated with education and the transmission of knowledge in general. Consequently, the development of culturally-aware educational technologies, capable of understanding and adapting to learners' cultural specificities, is a highly relevant objective for the AIED community, as it would contribute to globalizing technologies developed mainly in the West and optimizing learning interactions for greater equity in access to knowledge and training. Inspired by recent publications dealing with emerging psychological or personality aspects in LLM-based chatbot responses, this paper investigates the notion of cultural intelligence in commercial chatbots and assesses whether it is possible to evaluate their cultural intelligence using existing techniques. Results show that commercial chatbots' responses frequently incorporate cultural awareness in their response, while at the same time manifesting inconsistency in their cultural personality. A reflection is then provided on implications of these results for future AIED work involving LLMs.
