Automated methods are becoming increasingly used to support formative feedback on students' science explanation writing. Most of this work addresses students' responses to short answer questions. We investigate automated feedback on students' science explanation essays, which discuss multiple ideas. Feedback is based on a rubric that identifies the main ideas students are prompted to include in explanatory essays about the physics of energy and mass. We have found that students revisions generally improve their essays. Here, we focus on two factors that affect the accuracy of the automated feedback. First, learned representations of the six main ideas in the rubric differ with respect to their distinctiveness from each other, and therefore the ability of automated methods to identify them in student essays. Second, sometimes a student's statement lacks sufficient clarity for the automated tool to associate it more strongly with one of the main ideas above all others.

Self-regulated learning (SRL) has been extensively studied using self-reported measures, such as surveys, and more recently, behavioral measures, such as trace data. While both modalities offer insights into SRL, their relationship remains ambiguous. Although previous research has compared these modalities, there has been limited work on integrating them and exploring the interplay of dimensions across modalities. To address this gap, we adopt a multimodal perspective and follow a threefold approach: horizontal, vertical, and integrated analyses. We identify behaviors per dimension from both data sources in the horizontal analysis. We then assess the alignment of dimensions across modalities in the vertical analysis. Finally, in the integrated analysis, we uncover the intricate interplay between dimensions across modalities using Canonical Correlation Analysis. For this purpose, we design and conduct a study with 79 participants interacting with an Intelligent Tutoring System. We find limited agreement in the vertical comparison between modalities. However, the integrated analysis reveals a moderate correlation, highlighting the complex relationship between behavioral actions and self-reported SRL perceptions.

With the development of Evidence based training (EBT), more and more airlines realize this is a subsystem of SMS, which provides overarching tool from operation safety to training and vice versa. The analysis of instructor grading data and operation data allows the training manager analyze the whole system performance. In order to run through ADDIE (Analyze, design, development, implement, evaluation) process, evaluation is necessary to course design, instructor performance and the training system performance. This paper analyzes two airlines EBT training data from the competency grading, trainees rank, correlation perspectives, and also propose the possible way of analyzing competency from FOQA data.

Africa has a high student-to-teacher ratio which limits students' access to teachers for learning support such as educational question answering. In this work, we extended Kwame, a bilingual AI teaching assistant for coding education, adapted it for science education, and deployed it as a web app. Kwame for Science provides passages from well-curated knowledge sources and related past national exam questions as answers to questions from students based on the Integrated Science subject of the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Furthermore, students can view past national exam questions along with their answers and filter by year, question type, and topics that were automatically categorized by a topic detection model which we developed (91% unweighted average recall). We deployed Kwame for Science in the real world over 8months and had 750 users across 32 countries (15 in Africa) and 1.5K questions asked. Our evaluation showed an 87.2% top 3 accuracy (n = 109 questions) implying that Kwame for Science has a high chance of giving at least one useful answer among the 3 displayed. We categorized the reasons the model incorrectly answered questions to provide insights for future improvements. We also share challenges and lessons with the development, deployment, and human-computer interaction component of such a tool to enable other researchers to deploy similar tools. With a first-of-its-kind tool within the African context, Kwame for Science has the potential to enable the delivery of scalable, cost-effective, and quality remote education to millions of people across Africa.

Incorporating human tutoring with AI holds promise for supporting diverse math learners. In the U.S., approximately 15% of students receive special education services, with limited previous research within AIED on the impact of AI-assisted learning among students with disabilities. Previous work combining human tutors and AI suggests that students with lower prior knowledge, such as lacking basic skills, exhibit greater learning gains compared to their more knowledgeable peers. Building upon this finding, we hypothesize that hybrid human-AI tutoring will have positive effects among students in inclusive settings, classrooms containing both students with and without identified disabilities. To investigate this hypothesis, we conduct a two-study quasi-experiment across two urban, low-income middle schools: one in Pennsylvania with 362 students and another in California comprised of 733 students, involving 27% and 16% of students with disabilities, respectively. Our findings indicate hybrid human-AI tutoring has positive effects on learning processes and outcomes among all students, including students with disabilities. The motivational benefits of the human tutoring treatment over a control group using solely math software show up in greater increases in practice and skill proficiency during math software use for students with disabilities than other students. In addition, the treatment yields significantly higher pre-to-post learning gains for all including students with disabilities whose relative gains trend higher and are statistically at least as high. These compelling findings support the promise of hybrid human-AI solutions and emphasize the collaborative focus among AIED to support diverse learners.

With artificial intelligence (AI) technology development, decision support systems (DSS) supporting human judgment are applied to multi-agent systems (MAS) as an interactive automated system. Despite the development of automation in systems, human judgment is important to prevent system failures due to impaired situational awareness under uncertainty. In human judgment, uncertainty can affect neural correspondence which induces cognitive bias, resulting in distorted judgment. Therefore, neural correspondences under uncertainty for appropriate judgments should be considered. This paper suggests understanding neural correspondence with multiple information judgments under uncertainty. For uncertainty, we used expected and unexpected uncertainty concepts influencing trustworthiness for the system performance. We used electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure neural correspondence in the multiple information judgment system. Based on the analysis of neural correspondence, we found that the cognitive process is based on linguistic and mathematical processing. With having trust in the system, humans can experience a strong incongruent situation by observing poor system performance. This study will give insights into cognitive process improvements of the multiple probability information judgment system through understanding neural correspondence under uncertainty.

Little is understood about how chatbots powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) impact teaching and learning, and how to effectively integrate them into educational practices. This study examined whether and how using ChatGPT in a graduate-level robotics course impacts performance and learning with data from 64 students (40 ChatGPT users and 24 non-users). Regression analyses revealed complex interactions between ChatGPT use, task performance, and learning of course-related concepts: using ChatGPT significantly improved task performance, but not necessarily learning outcomes. Task performance positively correlated with learning only for students with low and medium prior knowledge who did not use ChatGPT, suggesting that performance translated to learning only for non-ChatGPT users overall. Clustering ChatGPT-users' prompts helped identify three types of usage that differed in terms of learning and performance. Although all ChatGPT users had improved performance, Debuggers (who requested solutions and error fixes) outperformed the other clusters. In terms of learning, Conceptual Explorers (who sought to understand concepts, tasks or codes) had higher learning outcomes than Debuggers and Practical Developer (who exclusively asked for task solutions). The behaviors elicited by students in the Practical Developer and Debuggers clusters therefore were less likely to translate performance into conceptual understanding, while the Conceptual Explorers' behaviors were more conducive to learning. This empirical study helps improve our understanding of the complex dynamics between how ChatGPT is used, performance, and learning outcomes.

This paper aims to study certain popular abbreviations in Hong Kong Cantonese in recent years from a sociolinguistic perspective so as to understand their characteristics and uniqueness. It was found that these abbreviations come from different languages and regions, and different strategies such as Cantonese romanization acronym and translation of foreign languages into Chinese characters were used in the process of abbreviation. In terms of grammar, they aremainly composed of adverb-verb and verb-object structures, and the part of speech may change in some cases. Some abbreviations also have rhetorical effects related to homonyms or taboos. These abbreviations are mastered by younger generations and are mostly used in informal domains. The main consideration for adopting abbreviations is of practical concern as well as their function of "insider communication". Respondents rated Cantonese abbreviations as overall positive.

The designers usually expect to ensure the best alertness level of operators through ergonomic design, to ensure that operators obtain better performance. But it is unclear whether ergonomic design can be based on alertness and which dimensions of ergonomic design can be guided by alertness. As a result, cognitive indicators according to cognitive needs cannot be used to guide ergonomic design practice. This research explore the sensitivity index of alertness for ergonomics design through experiment. The results showed that the normalized PVT reaction time was significantly positively correlated with the normalized visual fatigue score, negative emotion score, and task completion time. The normalized KSS score is significantly positively correlated with the normalized visual fatigue score and positive emotional score, but not significantly correlated with task completion time and accuracy. If it is necessary to focus on improving the performance level of operators or avoiding negative emotions in ergonomic design, it is recommended to choose objective vigilance evaluation indicators. If the focus of ergonomic design is to reduce visual fatigue and improve positive emotional levels, subjective evaluation indicators of alertness can be used. If only reducing visual fatigue is considered, both subjective and objective alertness indicators can be used. If ergonomic design comprehensively consider improving performance and positive emotions, and reducing negative emotions, it is recommended to use both subjective and objective vigilance evaluation indicators.

Crew Resource Management (CRM) was introduced on the commercial aircraft flight deck to promote pilots acting in a well-coordinated manner. This was a result of several accidents where aircraft with no, or minor technical faults, crashed from a failure to utilize effectively the human resources available on the flight deck. CRM draws upon the disciplines of management science, organizational and social psychology. It originated in civil aviation, but its practices have now been adopted in other high-risk, high-performance industries where staff work in coordinated teams, e.g. Air Traffic Control, surgery, nuclear power operations and shipping. CRM is now facing new challenges to promote effective, coordinated teamwork. Teams are often now distributed across many locations but are still required to coordinate their activities in real time. CRM now must evolve to support the actions of remote and distributed teams. At the 2023 HCI International Conference in Copenhagen, a working group formed from subject matter experts to identify application areas and describe the key challenges faced in promoting CRM for remoted and distributed teams both during normal and non-normal operations. This paper describes the workings and initial findings of this working group. The results show that process areas, such as such as promoting Team Situation Awareness, workload management, coordination, and monitoring of the cognitive and affective states of others are more important for developing remote and distributed team CRM than are addressing the limitations imposed by the underpinning technology.
