Studies on AI-based facial emotion recognition (FER) of students explore a multiplicity of algorithmic solutions, taking a categorical or a dimensional approach, but overlooking the more education-relevant and objectively measurable parameters of the latter. The "arousal" dimension aligns the degrees of emotional intensity with educational distinctions of passive-active student affect. We build on a theoretical tradition of learning where the gradual transition between these two emotional states is explained with direct reference to student interest detection. The framework proposed models student interest by passive-active emotional intensity (arousal), and only incidentally by negative-positive emotional tone (valence), attributes estimated using a resource-efficient multi-task convolutional neural network. An emotional descriptor based on a 2D histogram in the valence-arousal space is used to establish a student "baseline emotional profile" from which to run analysis on any subsequent session. This representation is explainable and graphic, allowing for simple deterministic rule-based algorithms to spot changes in arousal.

An advantage of Large Language Models (LLMs) is their contextualization capability - providing different responses based on student inputs like solution strategy or prior discussion, to potentially better engage students than standard feedback. We present a design and evaluation of a proof-of-concept LLM application to offer students dynamic and contextualized feedback. Specifically, we augment an Online Programming Exercise bot for a college-level Cloud Computing course with ChatGPT, which offers students contextualized reflection triggers during a collaborative query optimization task in database design. We demonstrate that LLMs can be used to generate highly situated reflection triggers that incorporate details of the collaborative discussion happening in context. We discuss in depth the exploration of the design space of the triggers and their correspondence with the learning objectives as well as the impact on student learning in a pilot study with 34 students.

Compliments, as an essential type of evaluation expression, are also considered an important factor in assessing pragmatic competence. This paper analyzes how children organize their compliment expressions under the framework of schema theory. It describes the characteristics and developmental trajectory of children's compliment expression based on the four parts of language schema and 16 types of high-frequency expression. The analysis also reveals a continuity of sentiment strength, indicating that schema patterns differ significantly across various degrees of compliments. This novel approach can not only shed light on the realization of children's compliment expression but also provide a new avenue for research of speech acts and enhance the accuracy of sentiment analysis in natural language processing.

Online Citizen Science (CS) projects represent informal settings in which volunteers can learn and discuss about different areas of research while participating in scientific activities. In such settings, however, volunteer involvement is geared by project needs and individual learning occurs more as a side-effect. Data-driven, longitudinal studies examining such learning impacts are scarce. We study the user activity in the Chimp&See discussion forum on Zooniverse through the lens of social network analysis (SNA) to detect emerging user roles and evolutionary changes in behaviour indicative of learning. We explore the potential of structural network embeddings to identify similarities in relational patterns in comparison to externally assigned roles. Our analyses show that explicit roles such as "moderator" exhibit a high proximity in the embeddings, and that external promotions in the form of assigned role changes are preceded by a convergence of the corresponding behavioural patterns towards the ones of already established moderators, which is indicative of a profile change based on engagement and ensuing skill acquisition. Implications and potential applications are discussed.

Interactive simulations play a significant role in science education, serving as a platform for inquiry-based learning and fostering the development of scientific knowledge and skills. However, teaching and quantitatively measuring inquiry strategies has proven to be challenging due to their complex and inherently multidimensional nature. Our study goes beyond the prevalent focus on the Control of Variables Strategy (CVS) in prior work by incorporating additional relevant inquiry strategies in both teaching and measurement: exploring the variable range and conducting experiments under optimal conditions. We tested two different instructional approaches to jointly teach the three strategies by focusing either on data collection or on data interpretation. 161 chemistry apprentices were randomly assigned to one of the two instructional conditions or a control group without instruction and engaged in experimentation using an interactive simulation. In order to analyze joint strategy use, we applied a multi-step clustering method to students' log data that helped identify multidimensional student profiles of inquiry strategies. We found four profiles that related differently to conceptual learning, suggesting that combining strategies is more effective for conceptual learning than utilizing them individually. We also found that students instructed on data collection increased the use of strategy combinations with an emphasis on CVS. This suggests a potential avenue for assessing instruction efficacy, indicating that the impact may be strategy-specific. The study reexamines the grammatical status and function of the duration phrase in the V-DurP-de-NP structure wo du le santian de shu 'I read books for three days.' The DurP, semantically a verbal complement, is taken to be a fake nominal quantifier through a syntactic test. The puzzling form-meaning mismatch in the expression is justified from a functional perspective with corpus evidence. The study proposes that the DurP is incorporated into the object-NP to serve as an event delimiter. It is coerced into a typically nonreferential object to meet the "heavy added information constraint" hypothesized by Chafe [1]. The event-delimiting function is evidenced by the fact that DurPs are mutually exclusive with other event-delimiting measures, which is supported by corpus evidence on the referential properties of the involved NPs. This study provides new insight into the form-function pairing relation of the construction.

This paper starts from the expression function of the high-frequency construction "hao bu hao (Ok?)" in live streaming sales. By classifying and analyzing the structure from the perspective of context and multimodal discourse, the paper finally summarizes four interactive functions of the tag question "hao bu hao (Ok?)" in the specific context of live streaming sales, i.e. seeking recognition, holding the turn, maintaining attention and emphasizing the key points. This paper further demonstrates the diachronic subjectification process of tag questions such as "hao bu hao (Ok?)": the question degree weakens and gradually evolves into discourse marker. The emphasis function can distinguish the key information, which is a supplement to the interaction function of tag questions in previous studies. Besides, it should be noted that several interactive functions of "hao bu hao (Ok?)" are not contradictory, and only one "hao bu hao (Ok?)" is likely to show multiple functions at the same time.

In this work, we introduce the NavProc 1.0 Corpus - a medium-scale, annotated corpus of procedural texts within the naval domain - for use as a first step in modeling procedural structures derived from real-world data sources. In particular, we have rigorously produced annotations of frame semantics (i.e., PropBank-inspired trigger/role links) across verbal, nominal, and adjectival frames. Furthermore, we have annotated 21 distinct types of semantic markers and structural links between textual elements (e.g., frame triggers, entities, modifiers) which, taken together, result in a text-focused graph of semantic elements. Such a graph can be used to derive a more complex procedure structure for use in personnel training, simulation, or collaborative procedure execution. Altogether, this annotation effort has encompassed 158 procedural units composed of 2,316 sentences, 44,459 tokens, and 48,137 distinct span annotations. Furthermore, we describe and report LLM-based extraction scores for use as a baseline in future research using this dataset.

The vulnerable part of our ever-changing socio-technical challenges in a dynamic environment such as maritime berthing operations is frequently the human and our intrinsic cognitive limitations. Human factors and human error have historically been, and still are, attributed as contributing factors to accidents and incidents in the maritime domain [1]. This study utilizes Goal-directed task analysis (GDTA) along with a qualitative research framework to explore complex situational awareness (SA) and decision-making during maritime berthing operations. Many theoretical frameworks have been developed by researchers to understand how human cognitive functions in a dynamic and constantly changing environment [2-5]. Endsley's research framework was selected for this study based on its suitability, superiority, and applicability. Secondary research questions were also modeled and investigated to complement a more holistic understanding of the complex phenomena of situation awareness in the maritime domain. Utilizing non-probabilistic sampling, five experienced deck officers were interviewed using a semi-structured framework interview guide. The interview transcripts were analyzed using NVivo software. Findings showed 117 level 1 (perception), 32 level 2 (comprehension) and 15 level 3 (projection) information requirements. Secondary research showcased the top 3 factors negatively impact an individual's SA are noise, wrongfully assessing external factors, and distractions. Effective communication, mutual understanding of tasks, and sharing of relative information were identified to be crucial factors in ensuring cooperation within the ship's bridge team and improving situation awareness. The navigator's reliance on information varies based on factors like experience, task clarity, and familiarity with equipment. The concept of bounded rationality has garnered substantial attention and interest from scholars since its inception. It is widely recognized that in complex systems, decision-making by its members is bounded by cognitive limitations. In this context, multi-agent simulation has emerged as a popular tool to model complex systems. One important question is how to incorporate the bounded rationality of market participants in such simulations. This paper introduces a novel multi-agent simulation model that incorporates the bounded rationality of generation companies (GENCOs) in electricity markets. We also propose evaluation metrics to quantify the differences in simulation outcomes between the proposed model and agent-based models that overlook bounded rationality, assessing the performance of market mechanisms when facing the bounded rationality of GENCOs. Using the inability of power generators to accurately predict future load curves as an illustration of bounded rationality, we conduct numerical simulation experiments on various electricity market compensation fee mechanisms. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation model and evaluation metrics.
