The neural network-based TTS models are usually trained and inferred on the whole sentences, or, in general, on longer chunks of speech. However, these may negatively affect the responsiveness of the TTS system in cases when latency should be kept as small as possible. We present experiments using smaller chunk lengths, namely phrases, and their impact on speech quality when various chunk length combinations are used for training and inference in the VITS synthesizer.

There rapid resurgence of Vehicle automation systems (VAS), this may result in different types of effects over time. Thus, investigating the impact of long-term effects on users' Behaviour Adaptability/Changeability (BAC) is imperative. Besides volatile markets and shorter process life cycles, automation is one of the most important influences the vehicle industry has to deal with in the next years. Desirable adaptability and changeability based on user behavioural-based safety towards AVs is a quality requirement to stay successful in times of unpredictable transitions. This paper offers the reader knowledge on users' ability to adapt or change due to exposed effects, either safely or riskily. The focus is hinged on structural, cognitive and psychological aspects behaviour. The major extension refers to interaction issues, based on social system theory. This results may contribute and cultivation a safety-based culture on-road and in-traffic. Moreover, highlight the interdepended and interconnected issues to long-term automation exposure and sequences of effects, as-is effects and to-be effects. Thus, in short, the "power law of learning" and "power law of practice" in understating users' automation use, bridged on a systematic understanding of extended learnability, trustability, and acceptability. One of the core objectives of this paper is to promote an expert-based culture of advanced strategies and actual application practices. Thus, we aim to provide the reader with fundamental models of BAC based on a deconstructive thinking of sequences of effects.

Conversational information-seeking systems (CISs), such as chatbots and virtual personal assistants, encounter difficulty when processing ambiguous user requests (URs) and generate an accurate response, especially when multiple search results match the given request. As a result, machine-generated clarifying questions (CQs) can be used to refine the user's intent and provide a more precise answer to the initial request. In this paper, we introduce a CIS that can identify the need for clarification in URs and, when necessary, generating appropriate CQs based on the most relevant answers generated from web search results leveraging our novel modular approach, otherwise, the system directly provides the most likely answer to the user. Experimental results on our enhanced version of the ClariQ dataset show the effectiveness of generating relevant and varied CQs, as evaluated by automatic evaluation metrics for fluency and informativeness, BLEURT and Distinct-N. Additionally, our experimental results are comparable to or outperform previous approaches in terms of traditional NLG evaluation metrics, such as BLEU, ROUGE, and METEOR. Finally, we conducted a user study assessing the CQs on five key aspects: grammaticality, on-topic, specificity, new information, and narrow down, which revealed their adequacy. Moreover, our comprehensive analysis identified correlations among these quality aspects.

Programming computational models is foundational for students to better understand scientific phenomena, mirroring the methods employed by real scientists. Previous research has used qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate engagement in computational practices through modeling. This paper compares two methods of using log data - alongside video analysis or through cluster analysis - to analyze sixth-grade students' design moves in a block-based environment for science learning. We compare patterns identified through each approach and elaborate on their commonalities and differences. Our findings highlight how the methods add to each other, providing insights for future research at the intersection of computer science and science education.

Many studies have explored the influence of the position of a single piece of information in a head-up display (HUD) system on driving performance. However, few studies have evaluated the range of multiple visual angles. This study aimed to examine the positions and visual aspects of driving information presentation that enhance drivers' driving performance. Considering the horizontal and vertical directions, we designed two experiments to identify an appropriate area to present driving information. Experiment A was designed as a 4 (horizontal angles: 10 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, 40 degrees) x 3 (vertical positions: -5 degrees, 10 degrees, 20 degrees) within-subject experiment to evaluate the effects of the horizontal angle and vertical position of information on the reaction time and difficulty rating. The results showed that when the vertical position was -5 degrees or 10 degrees and the horizontal angle was 10 degrees, the driver's reaction time was faster and the driver felt easier. Experiment B was designed as a 3 (vertical angles: 5 degrees, 15 degrees, 25 degrees) x 3 (horizontal positions: -15 degrees, 10 degrees, 25 degrees) within-subject experiment to explore the effect of the vertical angle and horizontal position of the information on the reaction time and difficulty rating. The results showed that when the horizontal position was 10 degrees and the vertical angle was 5 degrees, the driver's reaction time was faster and felt that the task was easier. The two experimental results showed that participants responded faster and rated the task as easier when information was placed near the center visual field. The results may be useful for designers to present multiple pieces of driving information on HUDs and provide theoretical guidance for HUD interface design.

This paper addresses the 'routes to failure' in the causal chain of events as categorized using the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) framework. By using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method to evaluate the comparative influence of each HFACS category on other categories, the present research aims to classify each HFACS category as either an overall 'cause' or an overall 'effect' factor, and to give each HFACS category a comparable statistical value of their overall level of influence. Analysis of N = 30 responses from aviation safety experts identified that frontline perception faults had the potential to influence higher-level preconditions, and that 'Environmental Factors' were found to have the highest overall influence amongst HFACS categories at levels 1 and 2. The findings support the use of the DEMATEL method in the selection and direction of safety interventions. Safety remedies focusing on 'cause' factors are likely to have additional second-order benefits on associated 'effects', and more influential categories are likely to be more effective in influencing overall system safety. The methodology can assist safety managers in selecting and prioritizing safety initiatives, especially when faced with issues such as monetary or time constraints in the industrial context.

Lexical typology research starts from concepts that commonly exist in human languages. In accordance with the cross-linguistic comparisons, both the shared characteristics and distinctions of these universal categories within the lexical systems of diverse languages are revealed. From a lexical typology perspective, this paper takes the spatial dimension adjectives "deep/shallow" as a case study, exploring the diachronic semantic evolution of "shen((sic))/qian((sic))" in ancient Chinese. At the same time, the cross-linguistic comparisons of the lexicalization and semantic expansion patterns of "deep/shallow" in six languages are carried out at the synchronic level. The basic meanings and extended meanings of "deep/shallow" within these six languages are found to have a close-knit relationship. The spatial dimension adjectives "deep/shallow" exhibit the capacity to extend from the spatial domain to various other abstract domains, embodying the universality of human cognition. Being subject to the impact and constraint of national culture, the semantic expansion in these languages presents specific characteristics, shedding light on both the commonalities and distinctions in spatial perception and conceptual structures among different ethnic groups.

This paper conducts a corpus-based semantic analysis on the adverbial uses of the Chinese color term bai 'white' regarding its two metaphorical meanings - "In vain/For no reason" and "Free of charge". Based on distributional semantics, it is hypothesized that the semantic (dis)similarities of the two meanings can be captured by their usage features in real corpora. In the current study, the multiple correspondence analysis technique is employed to explore the distinctive usage patterns of the two metaphorical meanings based on a dataset that consists of 195 sentences randomly extracted from corpora. These sentences are manually annotated with 19 usage features, encompassing linguistic information from lexical-collocational, semantic, and discourse levels. By visualizing the general distributional patterns of the two meanings and their association strengths with the distinctive usage features, it is found that there are remarkable (dis)similarities between the two metaphorical senses regarding their usage variations, which can be used to explain the cognitive motivations of the two meanings in line with the Conceptual Metaphor theory.

Recently, working memory span has received much attention from researchers. Memory materials in previous studies are usually in the form of text or pattern to explore people's working memory capacity and duration, with few researches on working memory span. Thus, this article aims to explore the impact of individual factors and recall direction on one's working memory span. In this study, two sets of digital memory materials were presented randomly, and 12 participants were invited to memorize the numbers and retell the numbers they remembered in required orders: forward recall and backward recall. At the same time, the BD-II-407 Memory Span Tester was applied to record the indicators of participants' working memory span such as "score", "time", "number of errors" and "number of digits memorized", then statistical methods was used to analyze the data. The results show that individual factors and recall direction both have a significant effect on working memory span, and the participants' performance during the backward-recall taskwas superior to that during the forward-recall task, especially when the memory materials become too long. Findings of this study will help people have a better learning of working memory span. Besides, followup studies need a more rationally structured sample and more scientific memory materials to further explore the effects of individual physiological factors and types of memory techniques on working memory span.

To achieve AI literacy, the AI community employs explainable AI (XAI), to increase AI literacy for those outside of formal educational settings. Designing and evaluating XAI remains an open question that can be guided by existing learning science research. When designers view their XAI through a learning lens, they may better define, assess, and compare explanation implementations. We surveyed and interviewed designers of interactive explanations for AI to identify how practitioners build their XAI and to better understand how a learning lens can be applied for explanations of complex AI concepts.
