The growing impact of climate change on coastal areas, particularly active but fragile regions, necessitates collaboration among diverse stakeholders and disciplines to formulate effective environmental protection policies. We introduce a novel specialized corpus comprising 2,491 sentences from 410 scientific abstracts concerning coastal areas, for the Automatic Term Extraction (ATE) and Classification (ATC) tasks. Inspired by the ARDI framework, focused on the identification of Actors, Resources, Dynamics and Interactions, we automatically extract domain terms and their distinct roles in the functioning of coastal systems by leveraging monolingual and multilingual transformer models. The evaluation demonstrates consistent results, achieving an F1 score of approximately 80% for automated term extraction and F1 of 70% for extracting terms and their labels. These findings are promising and signify an initial step towards the development of a specialized Knowledge Base dedicated to coastal areas.

In spoken Task-Oriented Dialogue (TOD) systems, the choice of the semantic representation describing the users' requests is key to a smooth interaction. Indeed, the system uses this representation to reason over a database and its domain knowledge to choose its next action. The dialogue course thus depends on the information provided by this semantic representation. While textual datasets provide fine-grained semantic representations, spoken dialogue datasets fall behind. This paper provides insights into automatic enhancement of spoken dialogue datasets' semantic representations. Our contributions are three fold: (1) assess the relevance of Large Language Model fine-tuning, (2) evaluate the knowledge captured by the produced annotations and (3) highlight semi-automatic annotation implications.

Providing personalised feedback to a large student cohort is a longstanding challenge in education. Recent work in prescriptive learning analytics (PLA) demonstrated a promising approach by augmenting predictive models with prescriptive capabilities of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Although theoretically sound, in practice, not all predictive features can be leveraged by XAI to prescribe useful feedback. It remains under-explored as to how to engineer such predictive features that can be used to prescribe personalised and actionable feedback. To address this, we proposed a learning activity-based approach to design features that are informative to both predictive and prescriptive performance in PLA. We conducted empirical evaluations of the quality of PLA-generated feedback compared to feedback written by experienced teachers in a large-scale university course. Four rubric criteria, including Readily Applicablility, Readability, Relational, and Specificity, were designed based on previous research. We found that: (i) By adopting learning activity-based features, PLA generates high quality feedback without sacrificing predictive performance;(ii) Most experienced teaching staff rated PLA-generated feedback as readily applicable to the course;and (iii) Compared to teacher-written feedback, the quality of PLA-generated feedback is consistently rated higher (with statistical significance) in all four rubric criteria by experienced teachers. This study investigates the impact of background music tempo on human work performance, specifically focusing on a finger dexterity task. Recognizing the acoustic environment's role in work efficiency, the study addresses sound distractions that can affect attention, stress levels, and overall performance. Despite interventions like soundproofing and background music, research has not reached a consistent conclusion on the effects of background music on human work performance. An experiment is designed to let participants complete a specified hand operation task under both fast and slow background music conditions. Results revealed a significant difference in task completion times, with participants demonstrating greater efficiency under slow-tempo music. This suggests that fast-paced background music may impede work efficiency in tasks requiring fine hand motor skills. The finding aligns with human factors theory, indicating that slow music better aligns with optimal arousal levels, minimizing sensory overload and stress, and enhancing focused task performance. The study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced relationship between background music tempo and human work performance, particularly in tasks involving precision and attention to detail.

In this paper, gender-related variations in the semi-institutional discourse are examined. We investigate the cross-gender conversation in the talk show Behind the Headline with Wentao, a corpus of around 88,000 words of Mandarin Chinese conversation and identify gender variation between female and male guests. We explore the turn-taking features and characteristic terms that set the gender categories apart. We observe that female speakers tend to produce more and longer turns when discussion topics about people and relationships whereas males have longer turns when discussing leisure activities and issues. Generational differences across binary gender groups show that females use more hedges of various functions than males. The results also suggest that male and female speakers tend to use more gendered terms when the conversational topics involved people and relationships.

Zero anaphora is an important form of textual cohesion in Chinese. However, there have been few previous studies on zero anaphora errors, and the analysis of the causes of zero anaphora errors has been too general, which is not suitable for teaching purposes. As a result, most international students are unsure about when to use zero anaphora. To help international students better understand and master zero anaphora, we selected 50 compositions written by international students from the HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus and annotated them. Based on the labeling results, zero anaphora errors are classified into two types: lack of zero anaphora and overuse of zero anaphora. Among these, the overuse of zero anaphora can be further categorized into two subtypes: topic missing due to overuse of zero anaphora and reference errors due to overuse of zero *** addition, we have also observed the limitations of zero anaphora in discourse by analyzing the errors made by international students, and fully explored its lexical and semantic features to provide more targeted guidance for their writing.

The synaesthetic mapping pattern of modern Chinese lexicon have long been a focal point in both national and international linguistic studies. However, issues at the morpheme level are scarce, and there is rarely incorporating psychological sensations into mapping models. This paper meticulously analyzes 279 synaesthetic cases, derived from 190 adjectival sensory words in the Modern Chinese Dictionary (7th Edition). Through this analysis, 27 synaesthesia patterns are identified. It is discovered that the phenomenon of synaesthesia in modern Chinese significantly differs at the morpheme level and lexicon level. Notably, psychological feeling in Chinese synaesthesia is frequently mapped as destination, becoming a distinctive feature of these metaphors. This finding provides new perspectives and methods for research in lexicology, etymology, and machine translation. Studying sensory metaphors within words in the Chinese lexicon and comparing them with those within phrases revealed the characteristics of sensory word formation in modern Chinese, offering fresh insights and examples for research in etymology and semantic evolution.

Multiword expressions (MWEs) are word combinations that behave like a unit by showing some type of semantic, syntactic or functional idiosyncratic properties. MWEs are a pervasive phenomenon of language, and the importance of their computational treatment in many Natural Language Processing tasks has long been recognized. However, the ambiguous nature and unpredictable behavior of MWEs make the creation of resources such as lexicons, dictionaries, and annotated corpora difficult and time-consuming. Resources available often focus only on specific kinds of MWE, leaving out the others. This paper presents a corpus of spoken Italian annotated with MWEs by five annotators who are native speakers of Italian and experts in linguistics. The annotation was done in context and comprehensively, without focusing on specific types of MWEs. The corpus contains approximately 50,000 words and 1050 MWE forms, corresponding to 269 MWE types. The corpus is a new and unique resource for spoken Italian and MWEs, which can be used as a gold standard for MWE identification systems and other linguistic tasks. It can also prompt more research on MWEs in spoken varieties of languages.

Learning analytics dashboards (LADs) serve as pivotal tools in transforming complex learner data into actionable insights for educational stakeholders. Despite their potential, the effectiveness of LADs, particularly the visualisations they utilise, has been under scrutiny. Concerns have been raised about their potential to cause cognitive overload, especially for users with limited data visualisation literacy, thus questioning their practical utility in supporting decision-making and reflective practices. This tool paper tackles these concerns by introducing VizChat, an open-sourced, prototype chatbot designed to augment LADs by providing contextualised, AI-generated explanations for visualisations. Developed on multimodal generative AI (GPT-4V) and retrieval-augmented generation (Langchain), VizChat offers on-demand, contextually relevant explanations that aim to improve user comprehension without overwhelming them with excessive information. Through a case study, we demonstrated VizChat's diverse capabilities, including actively seeking clarifications on ambiguous queries, personalising responses based on previous user interactions, providing contextually relevant explanations of specific visualisations, integrating information from multiple visualisations for a comprehensive response, and offering detailed insights into the data collection and analysis processes behind each visualisation. Such efforts support the paradigm shift from exploratory to explanatory approaches in LADs, highlighting the potential of integrating generative AI and chatbots to enhance the educational value of learning analytics.

The monosyllabic verbs in modern Chinese should not be used as attributives directly, but the monosyllabic verbs that express the cooking meaning can be used as attributives directly, forming the ambiguous structure of "V-cooking+N". For example, kaobaishu (roasted white potato) can express both the verb-object relationship and the attributive-head relationship. The reason for the formation of this ambiguous structure is the semantic transfer from verb-object phrase to attributive-head compound. The semantic attribute of "produce or change" of V-cooking and the conventional production method in N's meaning are the main factors that affect its semantic reference. From the perspective of the structural mechanism of "V-cooking+N" structure, the semantic class attribute of N determines the anchoring of the semantic attribute of V-cooking, and the implication or presentation of "production method" affects the selection of structural properties.
