Large Language Models (LLMs) have the potential to influence the current educational framework by providing answers to students without educators' involvement. Herein, we have developed a new system, called HiTA, that places educators at the center of AI-assisted learning loops. The key concept involves using LLMs as teaching assistants to amplify educators' expertise with their pedagogical supervision. Built on retrieval-augmented generation, HiTA incorporates advanced features such as a user-friendly interface, a multi-mode prompt processing subsystem, and a customization subsystem that provides course-specific support. Compared to general LLMs, HiTA provides pedagogically oriented and course-adherent responses. Our system has been deployed to 6 educators and 400 students spanning entry-level to advanced courses at the Colorado School of Mines for two semesters. In the Fall 2023 semester, 270 students posted over 14,000 questions within approximately two months. From the 47 feedback forms collected post-semester, over 97% of survey respondents found HiTA helpful, and more than 80% considered it more beneficial than ChatGPT.

Xiaomai is an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) designed to help Chinese college students in learning advanced mathematics and preparing for the graduate school math entrance exam. This study investigates two distinctive features within Xiaomai: the incorporation of free-response questions with automatic feedback and the metacognitive element of reflecting on self-made errors. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of these features on mathematics learning. One hundred and twenty college students were recruited and randomly assigned to four conditions: (1) multiple-choice questions without reflection, (2) multiple-choice questions with reflection, (3) free-response questions without reflection, and (4) free-response questions with reflection. Students in the multiple-choice conditions demonstrated better practice performance and learning outcomes compared to their counterparts in the free-response conditions. Additionally, the incorporation of error reflection did not yield a significant impact on students' practice performance or learning outcomes. These findings indicate that current design of free-response questions and the metacognitive feature of error reflection do not enhance the efficacy of the math ITS. This study highlights the need for redesign or enhancement of Xiaomai to optimize its effectiveness in facilitating advanced mathematics learning.

This research focusing on Chinese inter-clausal subject-subject anaphora in causal relation utilizes a self-constructed corpus to test the validity of five hypotheses proposed in Chen [1]. Results demonstrate support for hypothesis 1, declaring that pronoun and zero coreference and NP and zero coreference are more common than NP and pronoun coreference and hypothesis 3 proposing that NP and zero are more common than pronoun and zero in Subject-Conjunction structure. However, hypothesis 2, which states that pronoun and zero coreference are more common than NP and zero coreference in Conjunction-Subject structure, alongside hypothesis 4, which posits that pronoun and zero would be more in Conjunction-Subject structure than in Subject-Conjunction structure and hypothesis 5, which theorizes that NP and zero would be more in Subject-Conjunction structure than in Conjunction-Subject Structure, currently lack unambiguous substantiation. For instance, zhisuoyi and ji mainly use fronted structure, while yinwei and youyu favor unfronted structure.

In multitasking environments, such as military flight missions, effective task prioritization is crucial to ensure overall flight safety. Cognitive control plays a vital role in this process, balancing stability for goal pursuit and flexibility for reacting to unexpected events. This can be challenging, since cognitive stability is also associated with more difficult task switching and cognitive flexibility is linked to distractedness. This study explores the use of eye-tracking metrics to diagnose the cognitive control state of operators within an adaptive assistance system in a multitasking environment. Three studies, involving 144 participants, manipulated control modes using a task prioritization strategy in a low-fidelity flight simulator. Eye movement data was recorded at 1000 Hz. The study employed eight supervised machine learning algorithms for binary classification, namely random forest, k-nearest neighbors, support vector machines, naive bayes, decision trees, logistic regression, linear discriminant analysis, and XGBoost. The average accuracy of 0.89 demonstrates that the recognition of the cognitive control mode via eye-tracking is feasible. The findings suggest the potential integration of eye-tracking metrics into real-time user state diagnosis for adaptive assistance systems, especially in safety-critical human-machine systems. However, further research is needed to validate the classifier in more realistic flight environments with an expert sample.

Within the learning-by-teaching paradigm, students, who we refer as tutors, often tend to dictate what they know or what to do rather than reflecting on their knowledge when assisting a teachable agent (TA). It is vital to explore more effective ways of fostering tutor reflection and enhancing the learning experience. While TAs can employ static follow-up questions, such as "Can you clarify or explain more in detail?" to encourage reflective thinking, the question arises: Can Large Language Models (LLMs) generate more adaptive and contextually-driven questions to deepen tutor engagement and facilitate their learning process? In this paper, we propose ExpectAdapt, a novel questioning framework for the TA using three stacked LLMs to promote reflective thinking in tutors, thereby, facilitating tutor learning. ExpectAdapt generates adaptive follow-up questions by directing tutors towards an expected response based on the tutor's contributions using conversation history as a contextual guide. Our empirical study with 42 middle-school students demonstrates that adaptive follow-up questions facilitated tutor learning by effectively increasing problem-solving accuracy in the learning-by-teaching environment when compared to tutors answering the static follow-up questions and no follow-up questions at all.

Free flight can improve the utilization of airspace, and the upgrading of communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) systems has provided tremendous power to accelerate the realization of free flight. In this paper, directed towards the collision risk assessment under free flight environment, the three-dimensional coordinates of the aircraft random time were studied, and time variable were added to the three-dimensional reference system. The human intervention of automatic dependent surveillance (ADS) and aircraft position error caused by CNS performance were considered. Hereby, collision risk assessment model of free flight based on CNS performances was established. The computation formula of longitudinal overlap probability, lateral overlap probability and vertical overlap probability were deduced. At last, the effectiveness of the model was verified by the practical example, the computation results consistent with the standard.

While machine learning (ML) has been extensively used in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to predict whether learners are at risk of dropping-out or failing, very few work has investigated the bias or possible unfairness of the predictions generated by these models. This is however important, because MOOCs typically engage very diverse audiences worldwide, and it is unsure whether the existing ML models will generate fair predictions to all learners. In this paper, we explore the fairness of ML models meant to predict course completion in a MOOC mostly offered in Europe an Africa. To do so, we leverage and compare ABROCA and MADD, two fairness metrics that have been proposed specifically in education. Our results show that some ML models are more likely to generate unfair predictions than others. Even in the fairest models, we found biases in their predictions related to how the learners' enrolled as well as their country, gender, age and job status. These biases are particularly detrimental to African learners, which is a key finding as they are an understudied population in AI fairness analysis in education.

Early prediction of student outcomes, as they practice with an intelligent tutoring system is crucial for providing timely and effective interventions to students, potentially improving their engagement and other productive behaviors, and ultimately enhancing their learning. In this work, we propose a novel approach for predicting the outcome of a student solving a mathematics problem in an intelligent tutor using early visual and tabular cues. Our approach analyzes only the first several seconds of a student's problem-solving process captured in a video feed, along with timing information obtained from their learning log. Our model, EPATT (Early Prediction using an Affect-aware Transformer and Timing information), extracts facial affective embeddings from video frames using transfer learning and analyzes their temporal dependencies using a Transformer. The timing information about when students take certain actions (e.g., requesting a hint) is combined with the video representation, enhancing the model's ability to predict student performance quickly. Experimental results show that EPATT achieves superior performance over baselines and state-of-the-art on a student dataset for exercise outcome prediction, demonstrating the efficacy of our approach and the potential impact of early outcome prediction for the development of better intelligent tutors.

The Chinese modals biran 'must be, definitely' and yiding 'must be, definitely' can both express the sense of epistemic necessity. "Modal + verb" is a representative construction that expresses modal judgment. The semantic types of verbs used in the pattern may serve as crucial indicators to differentiate the semantics of the two modals. We employed Distinctive Collexeme Analyses to compare the attracted verbal collexemes between the two near-synonym constructions "biran/yiding + verb." Data analysis was performed using a large-scale open-sourced corpus comprising approximately 2.5 billion Chinese words, collected from media articles spanning from 2014 to 2016. The results reveal that yiding is more likely to be associated with personal emotions, perspectives, and evaluations, whereas biran usually denotes impersonal causal consequences and trends. The proposed approach has the potential to differentiate the subtle semantic distinctions conveyed by diverse modal synonyms, which speakers may not even consciously recognize, and also offer methodological implications and empirical knowledge to the study of modals.

Pilot's visual activities are closely related to flight safety in approaches with visual flight rules (VFR). The objective of this study is to investigate the differences in eye movement metrics among captains and first officers in simulated approaches with different visibility conditions. A total of twenty commercial airline pilots (ATP licensed, ten captains and ten first officers, all males) who qualified on B737-800 were recruited to participate in this study. They performed two 6 nautical mile approaches with high- (Ceiling and Visibility Okay) and low-visibility (VFR minimum) conditions with a balanced order in a high-fidelity fixed-based B737 flight training device, which can be used for flight training. Pilot's eye movements were recorded via a glasses-type eye-tracker, including fixation, saccade, blink, and pupil diameter. The results showed main effects of visibility on mean pupil diameter, saccade count, and mean fixation time. Compared to the high-visibility condition, pilots exhibited larger mean pupil diameter, less saccade counts, and shorter mean fixation time in the low-visibility condition. Meanwhile, pilot type exerted a main effect on mean pupil diameter. Compared to captains, first officers exhibited larger mean pupil diameter. As visibility deteriorates, pilots may adjust their attention allocation strategies to cope with environmental issues. Notably, compared to captains, first officers suffered a higher level of stress in approaches, which may further influence their visual performance. The integration of eye-tracking technology and flight training in the cockpit can be used in evidence-based training to provide better understanding about pilot's eye movements and visual performance.
