When social models test theories and make predictions about real scenarios, they must be fit to observed behaviors. Realistic modeling frameworks offer multiple interacting mechanisms, each with parameters that can be fit. Previously, we demonstrated how to fit the preferences that SCAMP agents use to make tactical decisions. This paper extends that work by reporting experiments on fitting the hierarchical goal networks that guide more strategic decisions.

Futures research reports, authored by futures analysts, delve into various aspects such as futures contracts, the macro-environment, industry trends, and industry chains. These reports provide crucial information for comprehending trends in futures trading. The accurate identification and extraction of key data from extensive futures research reports poses a significant challenge for market regulators. An automatic summarization method for futures research reports is proposed. Firstly, key sentences are extracted from a futures research report using a self-constructed word list integrated lexical chain in the field of futures. Secondly, key sentences are represented as vectors that incorporate term frequency-inverse document frequency. Thirdly, the TextRank algorithm is employed to extract candidate summary. Finally, the maximum marginal relevance algorithm is employed to supplement some crucial but easily missed key sentences, thereby ensuring the informativeness of the summary. ROUGE is used to verify the validity of the method. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is both simple and effective in automatic summarization of futures research reports.

In this paper, we investigate the semantics and syntax of the X-copy structure of [X-t(sic)u-XY] in Chengdu Chinese. The semantics of this structure is rather elusive, as evidenced by the various contexts where it may occur and diversified meanings that it exhibits across contexts. Facing the difficulty in identifying its constructional meaning, we scrutinize the interactions between contexts and implicatures and figure out, for the first time in the literature, the main function of this copy structure as metalinguistic negation. Syntactically, this copy mechanism is proved to be a type of CP negation, as opposed to the propositional negation, such as VP negation and IP negation.

In this work, we propose a voting-driven post-processing strategy for enhancing the efficacy of supervised speaker diarization models. Speaker embeddings, x-vectors, are used to train deep learning architectures such as convolutional neural networks (CNN), Bi-directional gated recurrent units (Bi-GRU) and Bi-directional long shortterm memory (Bi-LSTM). The state-of-the-art unsupervised diarization is implemented using agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) with cosine affinity measure and obtained a DER of 26.07%. Among the supervised frameworks, Bi-LSTM achieves the lowest diarization error rate (DER) of 18.42% on the CallHome dataset. To further enhance the performance of the supervised diarization models, we introduce an interim voting-driven post-processing strategy using dynamic time warping (DTW) and euclidean distance (ED) on the predicted speaker labels. This interim voting and centroid-distance metric framework assigns mis-predicted speakers to the most probable speakers' feature space leading to a notable reduction in DER. The experiments demonstrate that integrating the proposed approach with Bi-LSTM significantly reduces the DER to 10.26%, marking a relative improvement of 8.16% over the non-voting Bi-LSTM framework.

A qualified chip sensor determined for mass production must undergo rigorous development and verification on the pilot line. In this experimental process, the sensor performance, quality, and R&Defficiency deeply impact the subsequent progress in the industry. Most pilot lines rely on human(engineers)-machines collaboration because the full-automatic production line requires extremely high investment and does not meet the demand for flexible technique adjustments. Therefore, the operational differences of individual engineers will directly affect the product's qualification rate. It requires the Process Design/Integration Engineers (PIE, as a manager role of the fab) to update the process flow or management strategies to improve the operator's performance and reduce human error probability, thus lowering the time and economic cost. For exploratory purposes, this study investigated three Semiconductor pilot scale production lines and interviewed 17 participants with multiple roles in the fab. It summarized 10 Common Performance Conditions and the related secondary index for operators' performance evaluation and discussed its results in relation to potential human reliability errors.

While recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) suggest their potential to tackle these challenges, limited research exists on how well LLMs respond to open-ended questions with varying difficulty and complexity. This paper addresses this gap by comparing GPT4's performance with human counterparts, considering question difficulty (assessed through Item Response Theory - IRT) and complexity (categorized based on Bloom's taxonomy levels) using a dataset of 7,380 open-ended questions related to high school topics. Overall, the results indicate that GPT4 surpasses non-native speakers and demonstrates comparable performance to native speakers. Moreover, despite facing challenges in tasks involving basic recall or creative thinking, GPT4's performance notably improves with increasing question difficulty. Therefore, this paper contributes empirical evidence on GPT4's effectiveness in addressing open-ended questions, enhancing our understanding of its potential and limitations in educational settings. The findings offer valuable insights for practitioners and researchers seeking to incorporate LLMs into educational practices, such as assessment, virtual assistant and feedback.

This research paper introduces a new area of study in the field of educational Natural Language Processing (NLP): Automated Long Answer Grading (ALAG). Distinguishing itself from traditional Automated Short Answer Grading (ASAG) and open-ended Automated Essay Grading (AEG), ALAG presents unique challenges due to the complexity and multifaceted nature of fact-based long answers. To facilitate the study of ALAG, we introduce RiceChem, a specialized dataset derived from a college-level chemistry course, featuring real student responses to long-answer questions with an average word count notably higher than typical ASAG datasets. We propose a novel approach to ALAG by formulating it as a rubric entailment problem, employing natural language inference models to verify whether each criterion, represented by a rubric item, is addressed in the student's response. This formulation enables the effective use of large-scale datasets like MNLI for transfer learning, significantly improving the performance of models on the RiceChem dataset. We demonstrate the importance of rubric-based formulation in ALAG, showcasing its superiority over traditional score-based approaches in capturing the nuances and multiple facets of student responses. Furthermore, we investigate the performance of models in cold start scenarios, providing valuable insights into the data efficiency and practical deployment considerations in educational settings. Lastly, we benchmark state-of-the-art open-sourced Large Language Models (LLMs) on RiceChem and compare their results to GPT models, highlighting the increased complexity of ALAG compared to ASAG. Despite leveraging the benefits of a rubric-based approach and transfer learning from MNLI, the lower performance of LLMs on RiceChem underscores the significant difficulty posed by the ALAG task. This study presents a close investigation into the auxiliaries in legislative Chinese overseas focusing on the Civil Code of Macao. Research results showed that: 1) Structural auxiliaries are dominantly used in the legislative Chinese of Macao, with some cases of numeric auxiliaries and comparison auxiliaries. No tense auxiliaries or modal auxiliaries are found. 2) In addition to its regular usage, the "(sic)"[suo] phrase has shown unconventional phrase combinations. Some cases of the "(sic)"[zhi] phrase are found in too complicated structure, with lengthy syllables and multilayer inner nesting. Besides, the added components before "(sic)"[zhe] are found diversified in nature, sometimes with lengthy syllables. 3) The readability of legislative Chinese overseas is to some extent compromised by the non-conventional combinations, lengthy syllables and multilayer inner nesting structures of the auxiliaries. 4) The standardization of auxiliaries in the Chinese language overseas may be attributable to multiple reasons. Therefore, standardizing the usage of the Chinese language overseas should resort to carefully designed strategies, "prioritizing the prominent issues", "referring to established principles", and "simplifying the standardization procedures".

With the improvement of aircraft's cockpit automation level, human-computer interaction is becoming increasingly important. Nowadays, the display of flight instruments is highly integrated, and pilots' workload is also increasing. Improper handling of workload by the flight crew during the execution of flight missions is one of the important reasons for human errors. In the rapid development of intelligent technology, we need adaptive, intelligent, personalized, and higher-level automation technology systems. The intelligent onboard tangible information system (OTIS) adopted by this research was used to replace electronic flight bag (EFB). Different from step-by-step troubleshooting against operating procedures, this system can communicate in real-time with aircraft systems, quickly locate aircraft faults, help pilots quickly execute programs, reduce the time of interaction information with the system, and improve search efficiency. This study conducted a comparative simulation flight experiment based on the A320 simulator to explore the differences in workload levels between pilots using traditional EFB and OTIS. The experiment used physiological indicators, NASA-TLX (NASA-Task Load Index) ratings, and task performed time to characterize the workload of pilots. Firstly, a difference test was conducted to explore whether there were significant differences in objective and subjective indicators of pilots handling the same abnormal scenario under EFB and OTIS;Secondly, the data were compared to further determine the levels of pilots' workload. The reduction of pilots' workload can preliminarily verify the rationality of OTIS. It proves that OTIS can effectively reduce pilots' workload. This study can provide a reference for the design of OTIS for the future cockpit.

In our contribution, we present an approach to an adaptive assistant system that supports pilots of a future military helicopter in dynamic missions by determining their intents on a tactical level. In a highly dynamic military mission environment, a pre-defined mission plan can quickly deteriorate due to unpredicted situational changes. To assist proactively and cooperatively, the assistant system needs an understanding of the currently pursued task and the corresponding course of action. This article describes an approach for a pilot assistant system that adapts its support to the momentary tactical plan to assist in the mission execution by observing the pilot interactions and probabilistic reasoning. For that, a plan and goal recognition system, based on hierarchical task networks, is integrated to generate partial-order sequences of observable actions. To derive the specifications of the observation and assistance demand a single-subject case study was conducted. To provide adaptive assistance the functions for an online intent recognition need to be developed and integrated into our mission and cockpit simulation environment.
