Measurement of teachers' digital maturity can be useful in diagnosing technology adoption in education and in supporting teachers' professional development. However, there is a lack of easily usable tools in the existing literature. By investigating the most effective ways to measure teachers' digital maturity, our research aims to fill this gap. The focus of this article is on a data-driven approach to the assessment of digital maturity in education. Following a process similar to teaching analytics (data collection, data modeling, data understanding and visualization, and contextual understanding), we draw on diary data collected from 12949 French primary school teachers using a virtual learning environment (VLE) during the 2022-2023 school year. Specifically, the paper presents results related to modeling and visualizing data. To this end, we propose a critical analysis of two automatic classification techniques, one supervised rule-based and the other unsupervised (hierarchical clustering). In addition to providing different scales to measure, we have proposed a new approach to diagnose and visualize digital maturity. In this way, the method provides insight into the diversity and intensity of technology use, contributing to a better understanding of digital maturity and providing a practical tool for assessing day-to-day teaching practices.

Domain-specific data face the long-standing challenge of expressing granular knowledge in a structured way, which is fundamental for fostering information retrieval in the context of domain-specific semantic digital libraries. In the art history field, the ICON ontology strives to face such a challenge by providing a model for describing complex iconographical and iconological interpretations of visual artworks with a high level of granularity. Nevertheless, such a detailed model has drawbacks when applied to extensive real-world data. The need for an extension of the ICON ontology emerged during the creation of 1) the Iconology Dataset, a manually curated dataset representing a selection of the interpretations by the art historian Erwin Panofsky, and 2) IICONGRAPH, a knowledge graph (KG) created by re-engineering the iconographic statements of Wikidata and ArCo. In this work, we present the ontology extension made after the experience of creating such diverse resources. The updates cover two distinct aspects. Whereas some features needed a more thorough description, other interventions sought to simplify the ontology to optimize queries. To this end, we present the motivation for such modeling that emerged from the creation of the Iconology Dataset and IICONGRAPH. We evaluate the newly added features through competency questions and in terms of their efficiency.

In this study, an adaptive instructional system was developed to explore the impact of automation transparency on learning outcomes in an assembly task. Participants were instructed on an assembly process for 8 unique shapes. The system assigned either adaptive instruction, tailoring restudy based on learner performance, or static instruction, providing a fixed amount of restudy. Transparency was implemented in the form of text-based feedback provided to the learner. Participants either received transparent feedback with explanations regarding why the system assigned restudy of concepts, or general feedback without explanations. While adaptive instruction and automation transparency did not show a consistent performance improvement in the assembly task, they appeared to influence participants' perceptions of the training. The findings and implications will be discussed.

Learning analytics dashboards are the main vehicle for providing educators with a visual representation of data and insights related to teaching and learning. Recent research has found that the data visualizations provided by dashboards are often very basic and do not take advantage of the latest research advances to analyze and depict the learning process. In this article, we present a success story of how we adapted a visualization used for research purposes for its integration in a dashboard for its use by teachers in daily practice. Specifically, we described the process of transforming and integrating a static sequence analysis visualization into an interactive web visualization in a learning analytics dashboard for monitoring students' temporal trajectories in educational escape rooms in real time. We interviewed teachers to find out how they made use of the dashboard and present a qualitative content analysis of their responses.

As technology continues to advance, there is a growing interest in exploring the potential of generative agents and large language model (LLM)-powered virtual students to revolutionize the field of education. In this work, we present Evelyn AI, a LLM-powered virtual student conversation agent that we developed for pre-service teacher training in a virtual environment. Students powered by Evelyn AI exhibit varying baseline conceptual understanding levels, dynamic cognitive-affective states, and short-term memory. These features enable personalized, adaptive training and promote a more engaging and immersive learning experience for pre-service teachers. We describe the design and implementation of Evelyn AI, and report results of alpha testing to assess the utility of Evelyn AI for pre-service teacher training.

Two-stage warning systems play a crucial role in ensuring safe and stable takeovers in conditional automated driving when drivers are engaged in non-driving-related tasks (NDRT). This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of visual and auditory warning modalities, particularly when NDRT have overlapping modality resources with the first-stage takeover warning. Two simulated driving experiments were conducted in a driving simulator, and we discovered that visual warnings were significantly more affected by the NDRT modality overlap than auditory warnings. The findings highlighted that modality overlap between takeover warnings and NDRT can negatively affect takeover stability. These results also indicate that it is imperative to take into account the modality shift effect and its first-stage modality while designing two-stage warning systems. Our results suggest that using auditory warnings in the first stage leads to a more stable takeover performance than visual warnings. We found that the modality of the initial takeover warning significantly influences drivers' attention allocation and alertness. These insights provide empirical support for the industrial design of two-stage takeover warning systems, paving the way for more diversified and effective automobile intelligent cockpit designs.

Access to reliable scientific knowledge is crucial to making informed decisions for both policymakers and citizens. However, scientific documents are inherently difficult due to their complex terminology and vernacular. Automatic text simplification aims to remove some of these barriers. Evaluation frameworks, which include collections and evaluation measures, are designed to assess the generated text simplifications. In this paper, we perform a comparative analysis of current text simplification evaluation measures on both scientific text and a generic corpus based on Wikipedia. Our main finding is that the currently existing measures tend to perform worse on scientific texts and on longer texts consisting of several sentences. More generally, our analysis informs the development of suitable text simplification evaluation measures for scientific texts.

Learning analytics (LA) refers to the collection, analysis, and presentation of big data to assist teachers in optimising learning conditions. Although LA has made contributions, it still has not met students' needs because it does not provide sufficient actionable insights that prioritise learning over analytics. Moreover, the degree of LA adoption is still limited, and students and teachers who do adopt LA do not engage with it consistently. Our research aims to examine students' perspectives of adopting LA. The research question is as follows: "What are students' learning perceptions and satisfaction under learning analytics-based guidance?" A qualitative study that included interviews and a perception survey was conducted at a university in Greece. The factors that affected the adoption of LA were performance expectancy, feelings, and guidance, according to the findings. Student satisfaction was also high with LA-based guidance. We discuss the implications and future research for students adopting LA.

This research is a case study to examine the question "How can we sell without selling?" in accordancewith the logic of Effectuation. For this purpose, we examined the association between the activities of employees of medical management consulting firms and Effectual Selling. We used the method of collaborative autoethnography to study, initiating at the time when she was a working graduate student at a business school, through a period of having sideline works, and to the time when she started her own company. The result may motivate practitioners to take action, since it indicates that the Effectuation logic and the "Otherish" behavior by successful other-oriented givers who are non-salespeople stimulates long-term sales achievements.
