This article outlines the digitization process and methodology applied to the archive of parliamentary questions from the 1st Parliamentary Term (1974-1977) in the Hellenic Parliament. A collaborative pilot project involving parliament, academia, and a research center facilitated the conversion of printed material to open data. The main tasks of the project include capturing digital images, a custom Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software solution employing machine learning, and rigorous validation for accuracy of a fragmented and of variable quality polytonic corpus in a variety of modern Greek language called Katharevousa. The article discusses the approach and challenges as well as the initial results of the digitization effort, emphasizing ongoing research steps. Overall, 1,674 images were digitally processed corresponding to 1,338 questions. Following algorithmic training, character recognition accuracy is over 98.5%. Successful implementation streamlines further similar digitalization operations in the vast parliamentary archives, while enabling in-depth studies on parliamentary control in the turbulent period of the immediate post-junta era in Greece. A preliminary comparative analysis with a corpus of newer parliamentary questions (2009-2019) provides insights and incentives for the further study of the characteristics and evolution of the Greek language.

The combined approach proposes the use of PBFT and Raft to ensure data consistency and fault tolerance in the system, and also integrates recurrent neural networks to analyze and predict the behavior of nodes in the network. RNNs can be used to detect anomalies, predict system load, and analyze time series data related to node operation. The proposed combined approach opens up new prospects for the development of distributed systems, increasing their reliability, fault tolerance and adaptability to changing conditions. Further research in this direction could lead to more efficient and secure distributed systems that can efficiently handle complex real-world scenarios.

Chatbots are becoming more popular on websites. To ensure their widespread adoption and effectiveness, it is crucial that the development of these assistant technologies prioritizes user experience, integrating advanced computational methods without losing the human-centric perspective. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the insights obtained from the Arag ' on Intelligent Assistant Project, highlighting the main key lessons from deploying a chatbot dedicated to facilitating accessibility to open data for the regional government of Arag ' on. This article presents the difficulties and obstacles faced to meet the needs of real users while modern natural language processing technologies are being incorporated. The discussion underscores that, notwithstanding the sophistication of artificial intelligence, the user experience should be prioritized through ongoing evaluation and improvement. Chatbots must be continually tunned to align with human interaction paradigms if they are used to be as valuable tools for citizens.

The Service Weaver framework enables the development of distributed applications in Go as modular monoliths, with the flexibility to deploy monolith components in different environments and at various levels of granularity without code changes. This work evaluates the performance of an open-source microservice application using Service Weaver, considering multiple service granularity decisions in environments of one and two virtual machines under various workloads. The results indicate that service decoupling, while beneficial to modularity and maintenance, can significantly increase communication overhead between processes and virtual machines, negatively affecting the application's performance and scalability. These findings highlight the importance of balancing service granularity and communication costs in the design and deployment of microservice applications.

The use of computers in everyday life has moved from hobby and technical professional use to being essential to almost all activities in people's lives. However, not everyone has a computer themselves or access to the internet at home. To address this, society provides computers that people can use at school, in libraries, at job centers, in community centers, and at government service centers. However, these are not accessible to those who need assistive technologies (AT), and they are not allowed to install the AT they need to use the computers. This puts people who need to use AT at a severe disadvantage to their peers at best and, at worst, prevents them from participating at all where computer use is required. This is a problem when a person is required to use a particular computer instead of their own and is a total barrier to computer use for those who do not own their own computer. Proposed is the installation of a free utility on all public or shared use computers that both a) exposes the built-in accessibility features in computers to make them easier to discover and use, and b) allows AT users to have any AT the need automatically installed on any computer they encounter, and then set up just for them. When they are done, the AT disappears.

Verifiably Encrypted Signature (VES) is useful to enable fair exchange in online contract signing. This cryptographic primitive introduces the adjudicator, a trusted third party, to keep the signature a secret but verifiable. The ordinary signature can be revealed at a later stage. In this paper, we propose Threshold Verifiably Encrypted Signature (TVES), which applies threshold cryptography to both signer and adjudicator parties to decentralize the adjudicator's power and achieve better fairness in multiparty contract signing where participants do not trust each other. We give TVES's definition and security notions, then present a concrete construction from bilinear pairings based on BLS short signature scheme and analyze its security and performance. We also show a practical application of TVES in the multiparty contract signing and exchange scenario.

In recent years, a new research area called order-fairness has emerged within State Machine Replication (SMR). Its goal is to prevent malicious processes from reordering transactions, ensuring that the SMR output reflects the local orderings observed by processes. One of the advanced approaches to addressing this challenge is fair separability, which is designed to mitigate cyclic dependencies present in transaction dependency graphs. However, in the existing implementation of fair separability, a transaction input by a Byzantine process can be output with only O(1) resources, whereas outputting a transaction input by a correct process requires O(n) resources. This vulnerability exposes the protocol to chain-quality attacks. In this paper, we propose an implementation of fair separability where the cost of outputting transactions remains consistent for the inputs of all processes, which enhances resilience to chain-quality attacks.

Classifying ancient manuscripts based on their writing surfaces often becomes essential for palaeographic research, including writer identification, manuscript localization, date estimation, and, occasionally, forgery detection. Researchers continually perform corroborative tests to classify manuscripts based on physical materials. However, these tests, often performed on-site, require actual access to the manuscript objects. These procedures involve specific expertise in manuscript handling, a considerable amount of time, and cost. Additionally, any physical inspection can accidentally damage ancient manuscripts that already suffer degradation due to aging, natural corrosion, and damaging chemical treatments. Developing a technique to classify such documents using noninvasive techniques with only digital images can be extremely valuable and efficient. This study uses images from a famous historical collection, the Dead Sea Scrolls, to propose a novel method to classify the materials of the manuscripts. The proposed classifier uses the two-dimensional Fourier transform to identify patterns within the manuscript surfaces. Combining a binary classification system employing the transform with a majority voting process is adequate for this classification task. This initial study shows a classification percentage of up to 97% for a confined amount of manuscripts produced from either parchment or papyrus material. In the extended work, this study proposes a hierarchical k-means clustering method to group image fragments that are highly likely to originate from a similar source using color and texture features calculated on the image patches, achieving 77% and 68% for color and texture clustering with 100% accuracy on primary material classification. Finally, this study explores a convolutional neural network model in a self-supervised Siamese setup with a large number of images that obtains an accuracy of 85% on the pretext task and an accuracy of 66% on the goal task to

Existing deep learning-based models for knowledge base question answering (KBQA) suffer from the high costs of adapting the system to disparate datasets in real-world scenarios (e.g., multi-tenant platform). In this paper, we present ADMUS, a progressive knowledge base question answering framework designed to accommodate a wide variety of datasets with multiple languages by decoupling the architecture of conventional KBQA systems. Our framework supports the seamless integration of new datasets with minimal effort, only requiring creating a dataset-related micro-service at a negligible cost. To enhance the usability of ADUMS, we design a progressive framework consisting of three stages, ranging from executing exact queries, generating approximate queries and retrieving open-domain knowledge referring from large language models. Facial expressions are utilized often in the day to day communication and are considered significant as they can mirror the internal emotional states of a person. Automatic Facial Expression Recognition (FER) systems aim at classifying the facial images into various expressions. To do this task accurately, better feature descriptors are to be developed to effectively capture the facial information. In this regard, novel local texture based feature extraction technique, Petersen Graph based Binary Pattern (PGBP), inspired by the Generalized Petersen Graph has been proposed. PGBP extracts three feature values in a 5x5 overlapping neighborhood. The experiments have been performed on MUG, TFEID and KDEF datasets with respect to six expressions in person independent setup. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method outperformed the existing methods in terms of recognition accuracy.
