Since their foundations, cities configured themselves as places of innovation, where flows of people, goods, services, ideas, culture, met and, through interaction allowed spreading of new ideas, solutions, applications. The traditional, spontaneous, way of spreading of innovation has recently left the pace to more structured systems. To-date, innovation is part of structured and prepared business models in enterprises, and it is very often rooted into policies of local, regional, and national development. Cities are not an exception to that, and investment on innovative systems and methods can make the difference in the success or failure of cities. Following the literature on urban geography dealing with the urban life cycle, covering also the most recent evolutions, summarized, as a matter of example, in Florida's 'New Urban Crisis', the present work aims at observing the most recent urban dynamics between spatial, urban demographic changes in view of the 'demographic winter' that Italy, together with many industrialized and more mature economies, is experimenting. The work analyses the Italian urban system, considering the urban dynamics in terms of population change, in its different administrative and functional aggregations, observing their characteristics and evolutions in recent times (2019-2023, pre and post Covid-19 pandemics), highlighting the formation of urban 'champions' and proposing a spatial analysis observing and evaluating their characteristics in terms of population dynamics.

Depression is a frequently underestimated illness that significantly impacts a substantial number of individuals worldwide, making it a significant mental disorder. The world today lives fully connected, where more than half of the world's population uses social networks in their daily lives. If we interpret and understand the feelings associated with a social media post, we can detect potential depression cases before they reach a major state associated with consequences for the patient. This paper proposes the use of natural language processing (NLP) techniques to classify the sentiment associated with a post made on the Twitter social network. This sentiment can be non-depressive, neutral, or depressive. The authors collected and validated the data, and performed pre-processing and feature generation using TF-IDF and Word2Vec techniques. Various DL and ML models were evaluated on these features. The Extra Trees classifier combined with the TF-IDF technique emerged as the most successful combination for classifying potential depression sentiment in tweets, achieving an accuracy of 84.83%.

Circular RNA (circRNA) is a class of RNA molecules that forms a closed loop with its 5' and 3' ends covalently bonded. CircRNAs were severely overlooked previously owing to the biases in the RNA-seq protocols and in the detection algorithms, but recently gained tremendous attentions in both aspects. Most existing methods for assembling circRNAs heavily rely on the annotated transcriptomes, and hence exhibit unsatisfactory accuracy when a high-quality annotation is unavailable. Here we present TERRACE, a new algorithm for full-length assembly of circRNAs from paired-end total RNA-seq data. TERRACE is compared with leading circRNA detection methods on both simulations and biological datasets. Our method consistently outperforms by a large margin in sensitivity while maintaining better or comparable precision. In particular, when the annotations are not provided, TERRACE can assemble 123%-412% more correct circRNAs than state-of-the-art methods on human tissues. TERRACE presents a major leap on assembling full-length circRNAs from RNA-seq data, and we expect it to be widely used in the downstream research on circRNAs. Conversational modeling using Large Language Models (LLMs) requires a nuanced understanding of context to generate coherent and contextually relevant responses. In this paper, we present Token Trails, a novel approach that leverages Token-Type Embeddings to navigate the intricate contextual nuances within conversations. Our framework utilizes Token-Type Embeddings to distinguish between user utterances and bot responses, facilitating the generation of context-aware replies. Through comprehensive experimentation and evaluation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of Token Trails in improving conversational understanding and response generation, achieving state-of-the-art performance. Our results highlight the significance of contextual modeling in conversational AI and underscore the promising potential of Token Trails to advance the field, paving the way for more sophisticated and contextually aware chatbot interactions. We introduce an automated pipeline for synthesizing texture maps in complex indoor scenes. With a style sample or color palette as inputs, our pipeline predicts theme color for each room using a GAN-based method, before generating texture maps using combinatorial optimization. We consider constraints on material selection, color correlation, and color palette matching. Our experiments show the pipeline's ability to produce pleasing and harmonious textures for diverse layouts and our contribution of an interior furniture texture dataset with 4,337 texture images.

This article emphasizes the application of fuzzy logic in the field of agriculture. The use of fuzzy logic is not restricted to specific agricultural domains, but rather extends from soil analysis to the entire process of plant production, encompassing various areas within agriculture. To gain a better understanding of fuzzy logic in agriculture, a concise and comprehensive literature review has been conducted. Crop yield estimation fuzzy logic involves the incorporation of input parameters such as productivity, area, and labor expenses. Through the application of fuzzy arithmetic to these parameters, a precise crop yield value is obtained. The fuzzy modeling employs optimal membership functions. The accuracy of the results is verified by comparing them with existing open-source literature.

Describing real-world entities can vary across different sources, posing a challenge when integrating or exchanging data. We study the problem of joinability under syntactic transformations, where two columns are not equi-joinable but can become equi-joinable after some transformations. Discovering those transformations is a challenge because of the large space of possible candidates, which grows with the input length and the number of rows. Our focus is on the generality of transformations, aiming to make the relevant models applicable across various instances and domains. We explore a few generalization techniques, emphasizing those that yield transformations covering a larger number of rows and are often easier to explain. Through extensive evaluation on two real-world datasets and employing diverse metrics for measuring the coverage and simplicity of the transformations, our approach demonstrates superior performance over state-of-the-art approaches by generating fewer, simpler and hence more explainable transformations as well as improving the join performance.

Recently, there has been a rapid increase in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investments. According to the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance, during 2016-2020, the global level of ESG investments increased 1.5 times to approximately 1,364 trillion yen;in Japan, it surged six-fold to approximately 264 trillion yen. This surge has led to a growing interest in ESG-related information disclosed by companies. However, studies on visualizing and combining integrated reports of multiple companies are scarce. Therefore, this study visualized and examined the type of ESG-related information emphasized in integrated reports of the banking sector and identified future focal points and challenges. In addition, a questionnaire survey was conducted to validate the usefulness of the visualization. The results confirmed the possibility of efficient and rapid understanding of the focus areas of the entire industry using a large amount of textual data, such as integrated reports. Furthermore, the visualization results provide an opportunity to learn about specific methods for incorporating ESG into management and its strategic significance.

The main challenge in multi-robot navigation is the resolution of navigation conflicts between agents caused by intersecting paths. The contributions of this paper are: The creation of a robot framework that allows us to study the emergent behavior of a swarm of robots in a navigation task that involves frequent conflicts, a baseline strategy for decentralized conflict resolution and a more advanced strategy called Decentralized Collective Conflict Resolution (DCCR). To resolve conflicts, the DCCR strategy uses communication between robots and collective decision-making to create planning constraints, while the baseline strategy creates implicit priorities from communication timing. To show the effectiveness of our methods, we use a swarm of up to ten Turtle-Bot3 robots applying the DCCR and the baseline strategies in simulated and real-world experiments. In scenarios with more than six robots, the baseline strategy is outperformed by the DCCR strategy, which has more resilience against congestion.

The PHYSICS European project aims at developing a set of tools for application developers, system administrators and cloud providers that ease the development, deployment and optimization of resources in Function-as-a Service (FaaS) environments in the cloud. PHYSICS provides a visual development framework for abstracting cloud application development, an optimized platform level FaaS toolkit for the deployment of FaaS applications in the cloud and back-end optimization toolkit for local resource management. In this paper we present the main experiences and lessons learned during the project execution as well as some of the solutions adopted in the project.
