We introduce a computational model that quantifies melodic pitch attraction in diatonic modal folk music, extending Lerdahl's Tonal Pitch Space. The model incorporates four melodic pitch indicators: vertical embedding distance, horizontal step distance, semitone interval distance, and relative stability. Its scalability is exclusively achieved through prior mode and tonic information, eliminating the need in existing models for additional chordal context. Noteworthy contributions encompass the incorporation of empirically-driven folk music knowledge and the calculation of indicator weights. Empirical evaluation, spanning Dutch, Irish, and Spanish folk traditions across Ionian, Dorian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian modes, uncovers a robust linear relationship between melodic pitch transitions and the pitch attraction model infused with empirically-derived knowledge. Indicator weights demonstrate cross-tradition generalizability, highlighting the significance of vertical embedding distance and relative stability. In contrast, semitone and horizontal step distances assume residual and null functions, respectively.

The FAIR principles constitute a cornerstone of contemporary scientific methodology, with the Digital Library (DL) community actively participating and providing significant advancements within this framework. By taking a reproducibility approach, this paper centers on findability, a pivotal aspect of scientific data management and stewardship. Specifically, we delve into the critical role of Data Search in enabling efficient retrieval across various contexts, including scholarly publications and scientific data management. Consequently, the convergence of Digital Library and Information Retrieval (IR) domains underscores the necessity to adapt document-level IR techniques to optimize dataset retrieval processes. Dataset retrieval relies on dataset descriptions, hampered by incomplete and inconsistent metadata issues. Lately, there has been a growing emphasis on Content-Based Dataset Retrieval (CBDR), where metadata and dataset content are equally considered during indexing and retrieval. ACORDAR is the first open test collection to evaluate CBDR methods. It offered early insights into the benefits of integrating dataset content in retrieval. Our study thoroughly assesses ACORDAR's quality and reusability while investigating the reproducibility of retrieval results. Concerns arise about accessibility to the collection's content due to broken links for 17.6 of datasets. Despite some errors and requiring non-trivial pre-processing steps, we replicated most but not all CBDR methods, thus raising some concerns about the suitability of ACORDAR as a reference test collection to further advance CBDR research and to employ these methods in the context of DL.

Self-regulated learning (SRL) stands as a crucial competency for learners in the 21st century. Research showed that equipped with strategies to regulate their learning and development, students demonstrated higher academic achievements and increased motivation. However, many students, across all age groups, often lack these essential SRL skills or struggle to effectively apply them. This challenge is exacerbated in digital and remote educational settings, where students operate autonomously without the traditional support provided in face-to-face learning environments. Grounded in Zimmerman's SRL model and the latest educational psychology research, we have developed an educational application, GoaLearn App, aimed at supporting students' SRL process. This application is designed to equip students with the necessary tools and guidance to take charge of their learning experience, set academic goals, manage tasks, and effectively monitor their progress. One notable feature is its incorporation of SRL prompts and surveys to facilitate reflection at various learning stages, a component often absent in existing goal-setting apps or planners. To address the specific needs of middle school students, this application includes functionalities such as class enrolment and shared goal and task templates provided by teachers. Currently, the application is being tested in middle schools across three countries as a part of a European project. It has gathered significant interests from teachers to utilize it for SRL skill development in students. Through the collection of real-world data, our goal is to refine and enhance GoaLearn, ultimately empowering students at different age groups to become active agents in their learning journey.

Students' success in the 21st century demands not only strong academic skills but also well-developed Non-academic Skills and Abilities (NaSAs) such as critical thinking, concentration, and emotion regulation. The emerging field of Brain-computer Interfaces (BCIs) offers intriguing possibilities for enhancing student learning and development, by providing real-time neurofeedback that could inform personalised strategies. While research on the impact of BCIs on academic skills is growing, there is limited research regarding their potential to promote NaSAs. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) aims to address this gap, by investigating and analysing the existing research on how BCIs can be used to assist the development of these crucial skills and abilities. This SLR provides a comprehensive analysis of 46 empirical studies between 2013-2023 selected via the well-accepted PRISMA method from 922 candidate studies. This analysis explores the diverse ways BCIs can facilitate or enhance the development of cognitive, motor, and inter/intra- personal NaSAs, either passively or actively. The findings of this SLR offer valuable insights into the potential of BCIs to revolutionise education towards a neuro-enhanced future that promotes not only academic achievement, but also holistic student growth.

Most existing Byzantine fault-tolerant State Machine Replication (SMR) protocols rely explicitly on either equivocation detection or quorum certificate formations to ensure protocol safety. These mechanisms inherently require O(n(2)) communication overhead among n participating servers. This work proposes the Unique Chain Rule (UCR), a simple rule for hash chains where extending a block by including its hash in the next block, is treated as a vote for the proposed block and its ancestors. When a block obtains a vote from at least one correct server, we can commit the block and its ancestors. While this idea was used implicitly earlier in conjunction with equivocation detection or quorum certificate generation, this work employs it explicitly to show safety. We present three applications of UCR. We design Apollo, and Artemis: two novel synchronous SMR protocols with linear best-case communication complexity using round-robin, and stable leaders, respectively as the first two applications. Next, we employ UCR in a black-box fashion toward making any SMR commits publicly verifiable, where clients will no longer have to wait for 2t + 1 confirmations on every block, where t is the number of Byzantine faults tolerated by the protocol, but can instead collect a UCR proof consisting of min(kappa, t) + 1 extensions on a block, where kappa is a security parameter. This results in faster syncing times for clients as the publicly verifiable proofs can also be gossiped with every new block extension confirming a new block.

Although there is a growing number of learning analytics dashboards (LADs), they often fail to improve learning and learners' awareness due to their lack of adaptation capabilities. This paper presents a systematic review that follows the PRISMA statement and analyzes the adaptation features of LADs and their potential effects on learning. 24 of the 462 articles retrieved were scrutinized using an analysis framework centered on adaptation. The main finding is that there is more evidence of adaptable LADs than adaptive LADs, suggesting that adaptivity is worth exploring. The results mainly highlight 3 common LADs adaptable capabilities - most of which offer data exploration features - and 2 adaptive ones that change or refresh indicators on dashboards. Only a few articles investigate the adaptation of indicator visualizations or organization on dashboards. Currently, there is no work on the use of advanced computing techniques such as machine learning for LADs adaptation. Additionally, only 5 articles provide some evidence of dashboards adaptation features evaluation. As a result, a preliminary research agenda on LADs adaptation is suggested for enhancing LADs adoption and utility.

Digital inequalities are still present on a large scale in the European Union, as despite the significant progress towards digitization, many countries are struggling to close the gap. Digital inclusion becomes even more important for socially marginalized and vulnerable groups of citizens in the context of engagement and participation in civic activities. While online civic engagement platforms could contribute to reducing the gap, the design and development was not clearly accounting for the inclusion factors from the start, thus the needs, motivation and barriers of marginalized groups were not explored to the necessary extent. This study focuses on the identification of facilitators and barriers that contribute to motivating and enabling, or are blocking the online civic participation of people from such groups. As a result of the Delphi study conducted with the Representatives of marginalized and vulnerable groups, two aggregated ranked lists of enablers and respectively barriers were established. These results showed that besides the positive or negative impact that the technology could play in the motivation for online civic engagement, more actions are needed at policy making level in order to reach people of marginalized and vulnerable communities in a more efficient manner.

Ensuring safety and proficiency in aviation requires effective training and maintenance of pilot skills. Pilots must maintain currency, implying regular flight, though some critical elements (e.g. emergency procedures) are rarely practiced in-flight. Simulator sessions are employed for safe practice and training. Simulators provide more opportunities for pilots to experience sophisticated training without safety risks and dependencies on for example weather and logistics. While human assessors currently evaluate pilot performance, a simulator can provide rich data for assessments, utilizing learning analytics for individual insights. Simulator data (and potentially aircraft data) is not regularly used yet in training to gain insights in performance. Furthermore, current training planning lacks consideration for individual needs, relying on fixed intervals and syllabi. This study aims to investigate how simulator data can be used to assess performance and if it provides valid statements about pilot performance. Thereafter, the data is used to develop a skill retention model accommodating personal differences. The research involves Chinook helicopter pilots from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, using simulator data to create tailored performance metrics for maneuvers. The ongoing study investigates the integration of simulator data into training assessments and aims to contribute valuable insights into pilot performance and skill retention. This paper presents the preliminary findings in the development of learning analytics within this context.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi), a blockchain-based financial ecosystem, suffers from smart contract vulnerabilities that led to a loss exceeding 3.24 billion USD by April 2022 [67]. To address this, blockchain firms audit DeFi applications, a process known as DeFi auditing. Our research aims to comprehend the mechanism and efficacy of DeFi auditing. We discovered its ability to detect vulnerabilities in smart contract logic and interactivity with other DeFi entities, but also noted its limitations in communication, transparency, remedial action implementation, and in preventing certain DeFi attacks. Moreover, our interview study delved into user perceptions of DeFi auditing, unmasking gaps in awareness, usage, and trust, and offering insights to address these issues.

Serious games are designed to provide purposeful and engaging learning experiences, fostering knowledge acquisition and skills development. They hold the potential to simplify complex theories and concepts, making them easily comprehensible for learners. While the versatility and effectiveness of serious games provide immersive experiences in complex subject matter areas, such as STEM subjects, healthcare, environment science, etc., the integration of serious games into K-12 economic education, particularly for enhancing decision-making skills, remains limited. This paper proposes a work-in-progress role-play simulation serious game design with the theme of international trade designed for grades 5-8 to enact roles of producers, importers, and exporters as well as develop economic decision-making strategies. The paper begins by discussing the necessity of serious games in K-12 economic education. Next, the paper elucidates the design process employed in creating the serious game "eKinomy" and embedding the simulation and role-play elements into it. We outline the steps taken to ensure that the game aligns with the learning objectives of economic education while providing an engaging and immersive experience for learners.
