Digital badges have been widely recognized as one of the topics of great discussion in higher education in recent years. The European Commission has presented its plan for a European approach to microcredentials with the intention of making these alternative credentials more widespread in the European education area by 2025. However, many potential stakeholders may not yet recognize or even know about digital badges. We investigated the current situation among Austrian employers, corporate recruiters, and headhunters through expert interviews. The interviews show that all the stakeholders mentioned have developed very specific points of view. We confirm that there is a widespread interest in badge use and awareness of potential benefits. Our interviews show that peer feedback from stakeholders supports the revision of current badges at multiple levels. These peer reviews should be formalized and published in a reusable and meaningful way. This leads to the conclusion that for these peer reviews to be helpful in badge development, there is an increasing demand for a platform or framework to bring structure and standardization to the growing amount of implicit and explicit feedback from HR experts.

Automated assessment of homework assignments is a challenging topic in programming courses. For some years we have been using our Q2A-II system, that supports 1) automated grading of homework programs, and 2) formative peer assessment, performed by students on the algorithm descriptions they submit with the homework. Here we present some of the data we collected during 4 years of activity with Q2A-II, in the framework of a university course on Basics of computer Programming. Each year, 4 homework were administered to 300-500 learners, with about 8.600 submissions (each made of program + algorithmic description), overall, and about 23.300 peer evaluations. On such data we propose several observations, aiming to rate the effectiveness of the initiative, in view of a more in depth analysis. On the algorithm descriptions we performed a basic textual categorization, using BERTopic-based text embedding topic extraction. The classification aim is exclusively to assess whether a text can or cannot be considered as an algorithm description: in two of the research questions we try to validate the classification and to see how different can be the behavior of the authors of such descriptions during the peer assessment activity.

This article integrates a research project that aims to understand the architectonic contexts' influence on meditation practice. One of the phases of the project refers to meditation practitioners' emotional reactions to a set of architectonic contexts using Kansei. Accordingly, we will use the Kansei inquiry method which allows the creation of predictive models that relate characteristics of architectonic contexts with the expected reactions of meditation practitioners. The more productive type of approach, real scale models, might be unpractical due to the high costs of implementation. The aim of this article is first to establish a conviction about which of the two ways of presenting models might be better for getting this information. Under these two conditions, 30 participants who practice meditation, 15 with PowerPoint (PP) and 15 with virtual reality (VR), classified 10 architectonic contexts on how they may be influencing their will to practice meditation. These 10 contexts vary in materiality and openings to the exterior. The Kansei word pairs (agitated-calm, distracted-aware, absent-present, uncomfortable-comfortable, numb-awake, unstable-stable, depressed-happy, and constrained-free) were used to evaluate the participant's perception. At the end, the volunteers were interviewed to collect information about their grade of Presence. The results showed higher punctuation attributed to VR in almost all questions of the Presence Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ), this might suggest a higher immersion grade in VR than with the PP. Moreover, the Kansei results for mandala windows suggest that a glare effect is only clearly perceived in VR. Finally, we recommend further studies with larger samples.

This paper considers polyphonic pattern matching in symbolically encoded music under transposition invariance. We show how, in two specific retrieval problems, the worst-case time complexities can be improved by an order of magnitude by applying a relatively straight-forward algorithm design technique. Moreover, the technique applies to most of the previously best-known algorithms for the other cases of the problem category, giving comparable worst-case running times. In general, given two point sets, a musical work T and a pattern P, the task is to find possibly transposed occurrences of P in T. The occurrences may be full or partial, with or without time-warping or time-scaling. The technique uses a merge-like approach to incrementally build pattern occurrences using sorted lists of notes. The algorithms search for incomplete matches that are subsequently extended as far as possible.

The number of dropouts from universities is increasing, and many researchers have claimed that poor academic grade is a major reason that they drop out from the universities. Therefore, there is a need to develop a system that can forecast the post-enrollment grades of the students at an early stage and help the students with poor academic grades. This paper aims to propose a method that forecast whether the rank of Grade Point Average (GPA) after 1 year of a student is in lower in the department based on the machine learning using the feature values, such as his/her study logs on the pre-admission educations of the university, his/her academic grades in high school, and the data on the admission examinations s/he took. In addition, this paper reveals the forecast performance and the explanatory variables that are effective for the task.

The main reason for initiating a software development initiative is to produce value for stakeholders. However, software projects vary in their degrees of success in delivering the intended value. Since software projects can consume a significant amount of resources, a lack of focus on delivering value can result in bad investments. Research suggests that the absence of frameworks and techniques to support organizations in benefits management activities may be the reason for the lack of focus on value creation in daily development life. To increase the motivation for, and the focus on, benefits management, we implemented a generalized version of a set of published benefit estimation and tracking techniques so that they are accessible in an extensively used development management platform (Jira). The techniques are for declaring goals and goal structures and for expressing estimates of the system's contribution to the goals. The usability of the system was tested with IT professionals, the preliminary results are promising for further development on the present functionality and for other pieces of benefits management functionality in the future.

One way of determining the reputation of a scientist is by assessing the portfolio of their publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. However, this reputation is an incomplete measure of achievement and creates a variety of misaligned incentives that negatively influence the scientific process and cause an increased distribution of low-quality research content. In this paper, we point out some current problems in the scientific process, how they are linked to the behavioral patterns of optimizing bibliographic metrics, and present a possible solution in the form of a reputation token system. The solution is characterized by a token economy with mechanisms to create stronger incentives for high-quality contributions and deter fraud. We provide a prototypical implementation of the reputation token as a smart contract for the Ethereum blockchain with a user interface and network visualization.

The paper examined adoption of a national healthcare ICT system as well as experience of the possibilities to adopt ICT, among Icelanders' aged 56 years and older. Data gathered in 2019 and in 2022 were compared to reveal possible changes during this period. The following research questions were asked: (1) How motivated are people towards health information? (2) What opinions do people have about the usefulness of ICT for obtaining information about their own health? (3) How has the adoption of the national healthcare system to seek information in relation to people's own health, and about various other health issues, developed in the period 2019 to 2022? (4) How has peoples experience of adopting ICT, and receiving help at using it, developed in the period 2019 to 2022? Random samples were used, and data gathered by telephone surveys and internet surveys from 173 people in 2019 and 214 in 2022. For each year the datasets were merged. The total response rate was 39% in 2019 and 45% in 2022. The main findings are that there was a positive development in the use of the healthcare system for being in contact with health professionals and to gain information tailored to people's health. Although people were in general motivated towards health information, the use of the system for information about healthy living and other health issues remained extremely low in the period. In 2019 the options for adopting ICT were not considered satisfactory but an important change happened in the period as majority of participants considered their possibilities for it to be good in 2022. They, furthermore, believed that using ICT made it easier for them to get information related to their own health.

Spoilers of sports matches reduce the enjoyment of time-shifted viewing. On YouTube, users who like sports often inadvertently know the outcomes of matches by seeing thumbnails of recommended sports videos. Therefore, this paper focused on YouTube video thumbnails and verified the possibility of detecting images that contain spoiler information on YouTube. We constructed a dataset of sports spoiler images comprising 4,531 thumbnails from baseball, soccer, and basketball. In addition, we proposed three detection methods: the Image-Recognition method using optical character recognition (OCR), emotion assessment, and posture assessment;the Vision-Direct method using the OpenAI Vision API only;and the Vision-Text method that judges using the spoiler dictionary for an image's description by the OpenAI Vision API. We evaluated the accuracy of these methods, and our results indicated that the Vision-Text method achieved an accuracy of 85% in detecting spoiler images. Furthermore, the evaluation results indicated that the Vision-Text method might be the most effective for detecting spoiler images in baseball and soccer. In contrast, the Vision-Direct method seems to be the most effective in basketball.
