The last decade has witnessed the blooming growth of healthcare chatbots in behavior interventions, elderly care, healthcare education, online diagnosis, and elsewhere. To meet the users' expectations and preferences, there is a need to investigate how to design social characteristics and communication modalities for healthcare chatbots serving different healthcare scenarios. This study introduces a co-design approach to address the challenges and uncertainties faced by users in virtual healthcare environments. By engaging users in an early design phase, the results provide insights into their attitudes and preferences for healthcare chatbots. It indicated that in different healthcare scenarios, users have varying psychological needs and considerations regarding the social characteristics and communication modalities of medical chatbots. Five kinds of healthcare chatbots are summarized: patient support services, health lifestyle and daily management, telemedicine and virtual health, emotional and mental health support, and assistance in medical work and research. Guidelines are proposed to inform the design of these chatbots, which can offer empirical support and practical guidance for future healthcare chatbot design.

Categorial Grammars offer a versatile framework for modeling natural language syntax and semantics. However, they currently miss a key component in grammatical engineering: feature structures. This paper introduces a conservative extension to the framework, incorporating feature structures and shows the practical advantages of this integration on a French grammar.

Robustness Diagram with Loop and Time Controls is a multidimensional workflow model that can capture all workflow dimensions, i.e. process, resource, and case. In contrast to other workflow models, such as Class Diagram and Petri Net, tools that support its automated implementation and verification are not yet well-established. As such, previous literature introduced the mapping of the Robustness Diagram with Loop and Time Controls to Petri Net, focusing on the reachability and reuse of substructures therein. However, this mapping is still incomplete since it lacks the support for component reuse of the resetbound subsystems. Furthermore, this mapping results in unsound and inconsistent Petri Net. This study proposes a mapping of the Robustness Diagram with Loop and Time Controls to Petri Net that addresses the gaps in the literature. Using Petri Net components and extensions, this paper introduces a novel mapping of the reset-bound subsystems that allows component reset and reuse and modifies some structures in PN that lead to its unsoundness and inconsistency. Lastly, the proposed mapping algorithm's overview, validation, and analysis are presented.

The progressive advancement of digital technologies offers novel prospects for the preservation and exhibition of cultural heritage assets in day-to-day museum operations. Within this framework, contemporary media platforms like virtual reality (VR) still maintain an element of novelty in public perception, thereby serving as a catalyst to engage individuals in cultural knowledge. Drawing on these assumptions, this paper introduces our serious game, Yabusame!!! - a collaborative endeavor between our team and the esteemed city museum, Hornmoldhaus, developed during the Coding da Vinci Hackathon for cultural data (https://***/en/node). The game, a VR bow shooting experience, creatively imparts the contents of a historical Japanese cross scroll that portrays the eponymous Japanese sport, Yabusame, alongside associated historical and cultural knowledge. The game design encompassed deliberate strategies aimed at optimizing usability and mitigating potential causes of motion sickness, ensuring the practical applicability of the game within the corresponding museum exhibition. This paper unfolds in three parts: firstly, an exposition of the cultural backdrop behind the game;secondly, an exploration of our didactic strategy, game design choices, and our vision for seamlessly integrating the VR game within a museum exhibition;and finally, the presentation of a study we conducted to examine the practical usability of Yabusame!!! in this setting.

The latest developments in Large Language Models (LLMs) open the door to significantly improving scaffolding and support when supervising word problem-solving. In this paper, we examine the potential of a large variety of open models for solving different types of arithmetical problems and discuss the potential implications for the development of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs). The results reported show that relatively small LLMs are able to correctly solve around two-thirds of single-stage word problems, obtaining a similar performance as children. Nevertheless, their behavior varies in terms of their ability to provide the correct solution for specific conceptual schemes. Beyond their potential as a problem-solving tool, the research presented opens the door to using LLMs for the implementation of virtual agent-based students.

Evaluating student translators' effort in translation and post-editing of machine translation provides valuable reference for translation training and learning. The effort indicators currently used such as those based on eye-tracking and key-logging data are variant. This study investigates the reliability of those effort indicators. It focuses on student translators working on the English-Chinese language pair. An eye-tracking and key-logging experiment was conducted to capture participants' fixation, pause, translation time, and edit data. Thirty-three students participated in the experiment and did translation and post-editing tasks. Data analyses have revealed the following characteristics of effort indicators: indicators based on the source text (ST) word count are more reliable than those based on the target text (TT) word count;indicators based on pause count are more reliable than those based on pause duration;indicators based on ST fixation are more reliable than those based on TT fixation;and the indicator of edit number is applicable to post-editing but not human translation. The findings are intended to facilitate the more precise evaluation of student translators' effort.

Social assistive robots (SAR) have potential to offer social and cognitive engagement for older adults residing in assisted living facilities. There is a need for expanded socialization opportunities for residents with or at risk for dementia given the growing rate of dementia and limited professional caregiving workforce. This was an exploratory study investigating family care partners' first impressions and feedback on SAR (both physical and virtual robot) technology during development. The goal was to capture family care partner attitudes (positive, negative, mixed) and recommendations of SAR. Family care partners (n = 10) viewed videos of SAR interactions and participated in online semi-structured discussions. Qualitative content analysis identified predominately positive attitudes of SAR benefit ( f = 111) over concerns ( f = 65) or mixed opinions ( f = 39). These attitudes and recommendations ( f = 256) were analyzed using a codebook created from foundational technology acceptance models. Perceived usefulness/function was the leading theme across benefits, concerns, and recommendations, which is aligned with previous findings of it being a predictive factor for technology adoption. Future research should explore customization of SAR for persons with cognitive impairment, adapting usefulness/function for disease progression.

This study evaluates the effect of warning colors of different hues, brightness, and saturation on human color perception performance by conducting a space system fault alarm color keystroke experiment with 80 subjects and testing 30 warning color samples with reaction time and correctness as the interactive interface color perception performance evaluation indices. The results showed that the individual independent variables (hue, brightness, saturation) all had significant effects on the subjects' reaction time (p = 0.000 < 0. 05), and there was no significant effect on the accuracy rate;in the multiple comparisons by hue, there was a significant difference in the comparison of reaction time between the hues H = 0 and H = 20, and between the hues H = 20 and H = 340;in the multiple comparisons by brightness, there were significant differences;and in saturation, significant differences were observed between all three saturation levels (40%, 70%, and 100%). In conclusion, this study provides information for the color design of interactive interfaces for future spacecraft such as space stations.

Distant reading and distant viewing (complementing close reading/viewing), allow humanities researchers to process larger volumes of source material, effectively increasing the resolution of our view on the human condition. Recently, document layouting methods based on neural networks have shown promise, but it is still a challenge for pre-trained models to perform well when applied to completely novel digitised sources without any fine-tuning, or in cases where a departure from the original model's classification grammar is a hard requirement. In this paper, we present a new annotated dataset of 423 newspaper pages and the baseline performance of a fine-tuned model on the dataset spanning 46 years. We evaluate the minimal amount of data required to fine-tune a YOLOv8n model to classify advertisements and obituaries in the newspaper Slovenski narod, issued at the turn of the 20th century. We compare the performance of progressively smaller annotation datasets to determine a region of diminishing returns. We show that the increase in performance for every additional annotated image fine-tuning a YOLOv8n model tapers out after about 250 annotated labels regardless of the number of classes trained.

The traditional broadcast TV viewing experience has barely evolved since its inception, remaining mostly static despite many technical advances. Smart TVs show attempts of filling this gap, but present challenges, such as limiting functionalities to specific models and lack of standardization. Privacy concerns arise as smart TVs connect to advertising and monitoring services. In the spectrum of interactivity, an option that stands out is affective computing, an interdisciplinary field that seeks to develop systems capable of recognizing, expressing and responding to human emotions. This work proposes the incorporation of affective computing techniques and concepts to improve the experience and interactivity with digital TV, naming it "Affective TV". The work presents a modular architecture, recognition modules developed for multiple modes of interaction and a fully operational implementation of the architecture, developed for the standard digital TV middleware in Brazil, Ginga. Affective TV uses audio and video capturing devices and allows users to set up their environments. Recognition modules capture and classify data, communicating directly to the TV middleware. Proof-of-concept applications, incorporating voice and hand pose interactions with facial expression recognition, were evaluated using the GQM. UEQ-S and TAM questionnaires were employed. Very positive results were obtained, including an excellent UEQ rating, showcasing technical feasibility, attractiveness, user experience, perceived usefulness, and ease of use. The proposal enriches the digital TV experience, providing a novel, interactive model with user-centric customization and emotion-driven responses.
