Validating news through close relationships (e.g. family and friends) is a strategy that young people use to assess the trustworthiness of news [1]. Also, some authors argue that "interactions with media are embedded within a biographical understanding of time" [2]. Considering this, this paper focuses on using semi-structured interviews with biographical features and based on the Q-Sort methodological approach [3, 4], as a qualitative strategy to map past and present news consumption habits. We reflect on this methodological approach to analyse changes in media consumption over time, emphasising social and inter-generational contexts. As part of a larger project, we conducted twelve interviews with individuals - from different ages and backgrounds - previously identified by youth (between 15-24 years old) as their news influencers. The interviews (N = 12) were conducted via Zoom video call platform between July and October 2023. Findings indicate that some strategies contribute to obtaining more thought-provoking answers from interviewees. Namely paying attention to spontaneous mentions of past periods or important events in their lives and mentions of changing media habits. Even though remembering is a complex process, Q-sort helped participants to reflect upon and talk about their media habits. Moreover, our biographical approach with Q-Sort methodology revealed interesting findings with participants of distinct ages and backgrounds.

The present study examines second language (L2) learners' development of English derivational morphology and its relation to L2 proficiency. There is a limited number of empirical studies on L2 derivational morphology, particularly regarding relational, syntactic, and distributional aspects of derivational knowledge. Little is known about how these sub-aspects of derivational knowledge develop over time and how each aspect correlates to L2 proficiency. Fifty-four Chinese learners of English at three proficiency levels (intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced) were tested on their knowledge of morphological relatedness, syntactic categories, and distributional constraints. Results showed that L2 learners demonstrated a native-like pattern of acquiring relational, syntactic, and distributional knowledge. Learners' relational knowledge tended to stabilize once they reached and went beyond upper-intermediate proficiency, while their syntactic and distributional knowledge continued to grow. However, only intermediate learners showed moderate to strong correlations between L2 proficiency and overall derivational knowledge and between L2 proficiency and subcomponents of derivational knowledge (relational and distributional knowledge). L2 proficiency had statistically significant effects on each aspect of derivational knowledge and learners tended to score higher onwell-formed than pseudo-formed derivatives. The findings provide important pedagogical implications to instruction on derivational morphology for learners at different stages of L2 learning.

What makes a user comment relevant for readers? In this paper, we investigate the structural aspects of user comments as they appear e.g. in the comment sections of news media websites. While other studies already have examined the deliberative quality of user comments across different media, it is not yet well understood how the structural features influence the perceived relevance of a comment. Our goal is to develop an understanding of the influence of various structural aspects like position and different kind of justifications on the perceived relevance of user comments. We approach this question by means of a user study. For this, we ask the participants to decide which of the shown user comments is more relevant in comparison with others. Our study shows that the perceived relevance follows some intuitive rules, e.g. adding more justifications increases the relevance. On the other hand, some results were also surprising, like simple statements without any insights are considered relevant by the users. Our results should support the development of proper metrics and algorithms for comment recommendation systems by providing an additional understanding.

We investigate the possibility that the recently proposed OpenAI's ChatGPT conversational agent could be examined with classical theory-of-mind paradigms. We used an indirect speech understanding task, the hinting task, a new text version of a False Belief/False Photographs paradigm, and the Strange Stories paradigm. The hinting task is usually used to assess individuals with autism or schizophrenia by requesting them to infer hidden intentions from short conversations involving two characters. In a first experiment, ChatGPT 3.5 exhibits quite limited performances on the Hinting task when either original scoring or revised rating scales are used. We introduced slightly modified versions of the hinting task in which either cues about the presence of a communicative intention were added or a specific question about the character's intentions were asked. Only the latter demonstrated enhanced performances. No dissociation between the conditions was found. The Strange Stories were associated with correct performances but we could not be sure that the algorithm had no prior knowledge of the test. In the second experiment, the most recent version of ChatGPT (4-0314) exhibited better performances in the Hinting task, although they did not match the average scores of healthy subjects. In addition, the model could solve first and second order False Beliefs tests but failed on items with reference to a physical property like object visibility or more complex inferences. This work offers an illustration of the possible application of psychological constructs and paradigms to a conversational agent of a radically new nature.

ChatGPT, a promising chatbot program based on generative artificial intelligence (GAI), shows significant promise for its potential use in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. By engaging in dialogue with students, it provides personalized support for their reading and writing, which are fundamental aspects of EFL instruction. Although research on students' interaction with ChatGPT is emerging, there is a lack of focus on their Processing Tactic towards ChatGPT's Feedback (PTCF) and its impact on learning outcomes. To mitigate this gap, we employed a learning analytic method combining cluster analysis and process mining to analyze multimodal data generated during their reading and writing tasks. The analysis identified three clusters of students' PTCF: (1) Silence with no response, (2) Passive dependence, and (3) Active construction. By conducting sequence analysis on these behavior patterns, it was found that learners adopted three learning modes when using ChatGPT, which are Comprehension-focused, Tool-inspired, and Thinking-alienator. The findings also revealed differences in learning gains among groups of students with varying learning modes, specifically in the improvement of domain knowledge. Implications of these findings for both practical application and future research were also discussed later.

The generation of assessment test is a vast area within the educational assessment design process. In this matter, the type of the question is one of the most important parameters of this process, due to its impact on the development of the assessment implementation phase. This paper presents a development of a model of an assessment test generation using genetic algorithms with an additional type of item which is dynamically generated. The item has a form of a parametric structure, e.g. the quadratic function for a given set of parameters. The purpose of this paper is to present the schema of the additional part of the model and its integration within the assessment model developed and described in previous papers.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from an injury to the head. Depending on the severity of the injury and the affected regions of the brain, consequences vary a lot. Apart from physical challenges, a person with TBI may have various cognitive deficits, which affect the cognitive load of the person in different situations. The paper presents an early paper prototype for a wearable cognitive load measurement device design using biomarkers from an electroencephalogram (EEG). The paper discusses how the rehabilitation and daily tasks could be adjusted and optimized for individuals' needs by using such a cognitive load measurement tool. Designing this kind of system requires skills from various disciplines. Thus, the early product design was created in a multidisciplinary workshop. As everyday EEG-based tools are still in their early development phase, it is very important to pay a lot of attention to technical development. However, in order to facilitate the implementation of such technology, it is also crucial to concentrate on easy-to-wear, user-friendly, and fashionable product design.

This study, grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT) [7, 15, 16], aimed to examine the barriers and challenges faced by older adults when using social media mobile applications, focusing on autonomy, competence, and related-ness. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study incorporated observations (n = 33), surveys (n = 33), and semi-structured interviews (n = 4) to assess three popular social media applications in the Chinese market: WeChat, QQ, and Douyin. These applications were evaluated across five features: "Senior" or "Easy" mode, sending text messages, sending voice messages, initiating voice calls, and initiating video calls. By integrating Self-Determination Theory (SDT) principles with research findings, seven primary design principles have been proposed for social media mobile applications tailored to older adults, aiming to enhance their social engagement and motivation.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is an essential part of higher education and the development of professional and transversal competencies of individuals. The new technological trends associated with hyperconnectivity and collaborative learning demand more efficient strategies as a solution for a more comprehensive education. This study analyzes the perception of a group of students exposed to interdisciplinary collaboration with training partners, who provide challenges to be solved by teams where students from different disciplines and managers from different areas of the company collaborate. This research involves a mixed methodology, applied to a sample of 36 university students from three different careers. The analysis focused on three main components: the response to the applied instrument, the observations of the academic tutor, and the observations by the training partner. The results of the study reveal that (a) most students value the need for interdisciplinary participation and its characteristics, (b) the academic tutor highlights the benefits of student work in solving challenges with the training partner and the interaction between peers and business areas, and (c) the training partner observes the evolution of the student as they become more involved in the objectives of the challenge in an interdisciplinary manner, considering the collaboration of all those involved regardless of their professional profile. This study is intended to be useful for academic communities in linking with training partners by encouraging interdisciplinary competencies for the professional development of students.

The growing ubiquity of Information and Communication Technologies and the lack of older adults' digital competences created new challenges and research opportunities. Used to promote the acquisition of knowledge and deeply engage in learning activities, games are a potential medium to be explored. So far, research studies have mainly focused on cybersecurity and younger generations. Tapping into an underexplored research field and leveraging on the DigComp 2.2. framework, this research reports on a two-part workshop with eight experts in the fields of games, digital technologies, digital competences, and ageing. Its aim was to thoroughly delve into this underexplored research field, crafting game mechanics that not only consider the target audience but also directly respond to the areas outlined by DigComp. The results show six new game solutions, such as (i) identifying phishing emails and malware threats, (ii) assessing the authenticity of news items, (iii) acting as hackers to understand and create stronger passwords, (iv) optimizing search queries through interactive story search, (v) interpreting error messages, and (vi) navigating a simulated social media platform with personabased rewards. Therefore, the range of areas to be explored is expanded, including a wider variety of audiences and new solutions to be implemented. Moreover, the identified game offers practical tools for enhancing digital competences among older populations, and provide a roadmap for future research in designing empathetic digital solutions. Overall, this research highlights the unexplored potential at the intersection of these research fields, paving theway for future developments.
