Time delays are present in many physical processes due to the period of time it takes for the events to occur. Delays are particularly more pronounced in networks of interconnected systems, such as supply chains and systems controlled over c- munication networks. In these control problems, taking the delays into account is particularly important for performance evaluation and control system’s design. It has been shown, indeed, that delays in a controlled system (for instance, a c- munication delay for data acquisition) may have an “ambiguous” nature: they may stabilize the system, or, in the contrary, they may lead to deteriorationof the clos- loop performance or even instability, depending on the delay value and the system parameters. It is a fact that delays have stabilizing effects, but this is clearly con i- ing for human intuition. Therefore, speci c analysis techniquesand design methods are to be developed to satisfactorily take into account the presence of delays at the design stage of the control system. The research on time delay systems stretches back to 1960s and it has been very active during the last twenty years. During this period, the results have been presented at the main control conferences(CDC, ACC, IFAC), in specialized wo- shops (IFAC TDS series), and published in the leading journals of control engine- ing, systems and control theory, applied and numerical mathematics.

This book bridges the gap between system theory and global climate change research, and benefits both. A representative set of systems problems is listed indicating how such cross-fertilization would enhance present understanding of global problems while assisting the extension of systems theory. The goal is a comprehensive conceptual model of global change which encompasses atmosphere, lithosphere, ocean, biosphere and cryosphere. The systems model is developed in two steps using a "block diagram" approach. First, causality flows among principal components are identified and a block diagram representation is constructed. Second, mathematical description of the mappings represented by the blocks is derived from the physical principles and known disciplinary models. The generation of the;is believed to be the first of its kind. A number of helpful features characterize the book. Chapter 1 provides the basic framework and organization of the book. Chapter 2 is a primer to global climate systems for the reader unfamiliar with the subject of the scientific aspects of global warning. A list of notation in Appendix B, a glossary of global climate change research search terminology, and a detailed index for cross referencing are included. Additionally, a representative set of relevant systems problems in global change is listed at the end of the book.

Folding networks, a generalisation of recurrent neural networks to tree structured inputs, are investigated as a mechanism to learn regularities on classical symbolic data, for example. The architecture, the training mechanism, and several applications in different areas are explained. Afterwards a theoretical foundation, proving that the approach is appropriate as a learning mechanism in principle, is presented: Their universal approximation ability is investigated- including several new results for standard recurrent neural networks such as explicit bounds on the required number of neurons and the super Turing capability of sigmoidal recurrent networks. The information theoretical learnability is examined - including several contribution to distribution dependent learnability, an answer to an open question posed by Vidyasagar, and a generalisation of the recent luckiness framework to function classes. Finally, the complexity of training is considered - including new results on the loading problem for standard feedforward networks with an arbitrary multilayered architecture, a correlated number of neurons and training set size, a varying number of hidden neurons but fixed input dimension, or the sigmoidal activation function, respectively.
