The demand for flexible, lightweight body armor made with Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is in an uptrend due to its superior specific properties. This research aims at evaluating the low velocity impact (LVI) performance of the UHMWPE samples with and without nanofiller additions. In this study, UHMWPE prepreg sheets were spray-coated with 1 wt% of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and then compared against pristine samples (without CNT). Both sample configurations consisted of five sheet plies and impacted at an energy of 21 J using a drop weight instrument. Following the tests, the microstructural evolutions were carried out using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to capture the damaged area and volume fractions in the impact-tested samples. The results showed that the addition of CNT increased the maximum force and elastic stiffness by 4% and 21%, respectively, while decreasing the displacement by 8% compared to the pristine UHMWPE sample. Moreover, it was observed from the XCT-aided geometrical models that the damage area fraction and the damage volume fraction decreased by 35% and 40%, respectively, with the addition of 1 wt% of CNT in the UHMWPE sample compared to the pristine sample. The enhancement in force and impact damage resistance could be attributed to the increase in the interfacial bonding between the layers of the composite.

Defects in girth welds are the main factor causing pipeline failure. Among numerous non-destructive testing technologies, Digital Radiography non-destructive testing technology has become the main non-destructive testing technology due to its high recognition rate and simple equipment. However, the high degree of manual intervention and low recognition rate have become the main factors restricting its development. Therefore, the artificial intelligence recognition of Digital Radiography detection is researched in this article. Firstly, multiple denoising processes are applied to actual Digital Radiography detection images, and the mean filter with a kernel size of 3*3 is obtained to achieve the best denoising effect. Subsequently, various enhancement processes are applied to the denoised image. A linear transformation with a = 0.7 and a Gamma transformation with gamma = 2 has the best Enhancement effect. The Global Attention Mechanism and Bidirectional Feature Pyramid Network are added to the YOLOv8 algorithm to adapt to defect recognition. The improved yolov8 algorithm achieved a recognition rate of 83.1%, which is 10.7% higher than the yolov8 algorithm. Therefore, this method fills the gap in intelligent image recognition of Digital Radiography in pipeline girth welds.

Auxetic metamaterials exhibit distinctive mechanical properties, such as negative Poisson's ratio, high energy absorption, and enhanced fracture resistance. However, prevailing designmethods frequently focus solely on one of these properties under the assumption of small deformation linear elasticity, neglecting the nonlinear mechanical behaviors prevalent in real-world scenarios. To this end, this work proposes a data-driven design approach to customize individually or simultaneously the Poisson's ratio and compressive modulus undergoes finite compressive strains. Particularly, a baseline metamaterial con-figuration with a prescribed negative Poisson's ratio is obtained rapidly by nonlinear topology optimization. Subsequently, feature geometry parameters that have the most influence on the targetmechanical behaviors are identified with numerical and experimental tests. The identified feature geometry parameters are then used to train a neural network model. With the strongly nonlinear prediction of the trained model, an optimization model employing a genetic algorithm is performed to find a globally optimal Layout characterized by the prescribed Poisson's ratio and compressive modulus caves. Finally, the proposed method has been shown to possess a customization design capability exceeding 95% through Finite Element Analysis.

The shortage of specialized sonography professionals and the need for efficient training methods have led to the development of various sonography training solutions. This paper introduces a cost-effective sonography training system, combining a parallel master haptic device, body phantoms for simulating pathologies, and specialized software. The proposed mechanism is a 5-degree-of-freedom (5-DOF) parallel robot with two identical parts fixed on a stationary frame. It features a probe for scanning body phantoms and a self-rotation mechanism. The direct and inverse kinematic problems are analyzed to determine the probe's position and orientation. The proposed system offers a more affordable alternative to existing sonography training solutions, which can be prohibitively expensive, especially in developing countries. It provides a more realistic scan representation, offering a potential solution to address the shortage of sonography specialists while delivering high-quality training.

The purpose of this research was the evaluation the lubricating properties of waste cooking oil (WCO) of palm oil and its mixtures with waste cooking oil of rapeseed and sunflower oils. The research results show that both palm oil WCO alone and its mixtures with rapeseed and sunflower oils have not lost their lubricating properties during cooking, especially when using the functional lubrication additives. These additives can reduce the friction and wear of specimens not only with rapeseed and sunflower oils, but also using pure WCO. Estimating the possibility of producing plastic lubricants from palm oil WCO it has been established that it is possible to obtain lubricating greases with a dropping temperature of operation conditions.

Fused Deposition Modeling is one of the most commonly used additive technologies that is increasingly used to produce complex functional parts that can be used in realistic atmospheric and ambient conditions. Based on that and in accordance with the daily appearance of new materials, it is necessary to consider the conditions in which printed parts can exist without decreasing their mechanical properties, geometric and dimensional stability. The mechanical properties of printed parts are affected by many process parameters, so it is necessary to optimize them. In this paper, the influence of layer thickness, printing temperature and raster angle on the tensile strength of printed samples for two types of materials (PLA and carbon fibers reinforced polyamide) was analyzed. Mechanical testing of test samples was performed, which were previously exposed to simulated environmental conditions in which the given product will exist during its lifetime. Primarily, the influence of UV rays on the mechanical properties, geometric and dimensional stability of the printed parts was analyzed. Results shown that the tensile strength of the composite material decreases slightly after testing in the chamber in a time frame of 30 h that simulates 30 days of exposure in real atmospheric conditions, and that the PLA material in the same time frame significantly loses its dimensional and geometric stability, as well as decrease in tensile strength and ductility of the material.

One of the critical issues in the design of an exoskeleton is the matching between exoskeleton's and human's kinematic chains. The misalignments between the exoskeleton and human joints' rotation axes may reduce the support action provided by an exoskeleton or introduce shear forces on the human limbs at the attachment points of the exoskeleton. This paper aims to assess the effect of misalignments in the design of a custom industrial upper limb passive exoskeleton based on McKibben's muscles.

The paper discusses the development of an automated simulation process for creating a virtual model of a rubber mount, highlighting challenges faced. Simulations were conducted on 24 materials to observe the impact of material selection on dynamic stiffness and loss angle at various load amplitudes. The study demonstrates the significant influence of material on the rubber mount's operational frequency range and maximum dynamic stiffness values. A sensitivity analysis effectively illustrates this influence. This paper also covers creation of a reduced model, accurately predicting dynamic stiffness profiles for different parameters.

Multipath QUIC (MPQUIC) enhances web delivery performance by enabling concurrent transmission across multiple paths. Despite its appeal, unresolved issues persist in the current MPQUIC specification. The congestion control in MPQUIC relies heavily on packet loss, favoring paths with lower drop rates. This proves to be detrimental in heterogeneous wireless networks with frequent packet loss and varying path characteristics. Moreover, fairness principle limit its performance, especially in scenarios with independent paths. Besides, dynamic and asymmetric paths exacerbate challenges in packet scheduling, leading to potential out-of-order (OFO) arrivals and Head-of-Line (HoL) blocking. This paper introduces a novel scheme, Bottleneck-fairness and BBR-based Congestion Control (2B2C), inspired by Google Inc.'s BBR algorithm. It identifies subsets of MPQUIC's subflows with shared bottlenecks based on BBR's internal mechanism and dynamically adjusts the pacing rates to enhance throughput while preserving bottleneck fairness with single-path flows. To address the inter-stream and intra-stream HoL blocking, we propose a Priority-based Stream-aware Packet Scheduler (PS2) with a stream dependency tree structure, a priority-based queuing and a packet scheduler based on mixed-integer programming. Experimental results demonstrate that 2B2C achieves higher throughput with maintained bottleneck fairness, and PS2 effectively alleviates HoL blocking in contrast to state-of-the-art MPQUIC schemes over heterogeneous wireless networks.

Wheelchairs are the most common way to provide accessibility to people with disabilities but the transfer of patients in and out remains a challenge. With the development of technology, progress has been made in this direction through the development of mechanisms for reconfiguring wheelchairs and various solutions have been proposed, but these still do not solve the problem in a simple, easy, cheap, and efficient way. Consequently, to facilitate the patient's transfer, the wheelchair reconfiguration mechanisms must be able to fulfil several functions, such as morph into chair, bed, raising to an orthostatic position, toilet, turning on one side and others. This paper proposes a force balacing mechanism to be used for the backrests and footrests with cables and human or servomotor actuation. The proposed mechanism is designed to minimize human/actuator contribution when backrest is vertical and needs to move to horizontal position or vice versa. It is to note that the proposed mechanism has substantial force contribution for the whole range of motion (horizontal to vertical) and not only at the ends of range of motion.
