Vehicle stability controllers significantly rely on the knowledge the vehicle velocity and sideslip angle. However, direct measurement of these parameters is challenging and costly. While various estimation techniques have shown promising outcomes, their reliability across diverse driving scenarios remains inconsistent. This study investigates a novel methodology to directly measure velocity and sideslip angle, using computer vision techniques. A real-time framework is put in place, which is initially tested on a scaled radio-controlled vehicle. Experiments on a full-size vehicle prototype equipped with a Kistler S-Motion sensor (ground truth), along several manoeuvres, confirm the real-time applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Ultralight metamaterials with negative Poisson's ratio have garnered widespread attention in engineering and research disciplines, thanks to their exceptional energy absorption capabilities. With the rapid advancement of additive technologies, the relevance of these materials has further intensified. They are in high demand across diverse industries, including aerospace, biomedicine, civil and mechanical engineering, the military, automotive, sports, and electronic devices. The purpose of this paper is to present a new modified 3D arc-star-shaped structure with a negative Poisson's ratio based on the modified 2D arc-star-shaped structure. Poisson's ratio values were analyzed using the Finite Element Method with the ANSYS software package. Results show that for certain geometric parameters, the modified 3D arc-star-shaped structure exhibits negative Poisson's ratio values. Besides, comprehensive investigations were conducted to understand the mechanical properties of the modified structure, particularly focusing on the Young's modulus. Overall, this study contributes to the development of ultralight materials with unique mechanical behavior and potential applications in different fields.

The technological process of laser cutting of metallic and non-metallic materials is widely used in the machinery and equipment construction industry. Under these conditions, there is a permanent concern to improve the quality of the parts obtained, the quality of the surfaces resulting from cutting and their precision. The parameters of the cutting process: power, cutting speed, pressure, focus significantly influence the quality of the cut parts. The paper presents how a decision-making system based on fuzzy sets was designed and implemented for determining two technological parameters of the laser cutting process: air pressure and focus. The input sizes in the system were considered: the thickness of the material to be cut and the desired roughness of the cut surface. The output quantities were defined: air pressure and focus. The specific stages of developing a decision-making system based on fuzzy sets were completed. A user interface was also created. The results obtained by using the fuzzy system are compared with the experimental results.

In this paper, the numerical simulation software FDS is used to establish a full-size tunnel model to simulate a fire scene with a fire source power of 15 MW, and to study the influence of air curtains on the smoke propagation and temperature distribution of highway tunnel fires at different altitudes. It provides reference material for subsequent research on high-altitude tunnel construction, personnel escape and evacuation, smoke prevention and control, and tunnel structure design. This paper analyzes the distribution of smoke temperature, visibility, and CO concentration in various regions of tunnels at different altitudes when air curtains are applied, and explores the fire smoke spreading and temperature distribution law in tunnels at different altitudes under air curtain conditions. The results of the study showed that the smoke control effect of air curtains at different altitudes had a slight decrease with increasing altitude and was generally stable;The peak temperature that can be achieved by burning above a tunnel fire under an air curtain decreases with increasing altitude over the simulation time period;In the pre-combustion phase of a fire, the temperature at different altitudes at the same moment increases with decreasing pressure, the fire combustion of the middle and late law is the opposite;When the altitude is too high, there is a possibility of asphyxiation extinguishing the tunnel fire under the air curtain;before the fire source reaches the maximum combustion rate, in the range of 0 m-3600 m above sea level, the temperature and visibility of the evacuation area on the left side of the air curtain at the height of the human body are stabilized at below 66 degrees C and above 10 m respectively, which meets the requirements of personnel escape, and the temperature and visibility of the smoke control area increases with the increase of the altitude;the use of air curtains can have the ability of effective obstruction to diffusion and spreading of C

Model-Based Definition (MBD), as a paradigm for achieving more effective data and expert knowledge transfer of a 3D product and manufacturing information (PMI), is based on a 3D model with integrated information, such as geometric tolerances, surface finish, welding, material, bill of materials and other. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) integration within MBD is based on the new ASME and ISO standards and it is represented in 3D models. Coupling between geometric tolerancing and MBD for parts and assemblies is evolving continually, thus becoming an effective learning, validation and representation tool for engineers in the product design phase, as well as in production and inspection planning. In this paper, a concurrent approach to learning GD&T and MBDis presented and the challenges and advantages are discussed. Examples and case studies of assemblies and parts are used for better understanding of the purpose of geometric tolerances, thus making the problems less abstract for the students. 3D visualization of tolerance features, feature groups, basic dimensions, standard related rules, and automatic assignment and validation tools, together with MBD training, theoretic and practical instructions, sketches, computations and explanations, are used to support the learning process of GD&T.

Seismic isolation bearings have been widely employed for passive control of bridge structures. Traditional flat friction sliding (FFS) bearing sustains vertical loads, with its lateral resistance generated by Coulomb friction at the sliding interface. However, FFS bearing exhibits insufficient energy dissipation and limited displacement control under near-fault ground motions. Therefore, this paper comprehensively introduces a novel concept of damping plate-restrained flat friction sliding (DP-FFS) bearings. This combined bearing consists of a modified FFS bearing and supplementary damping plates, which features multi-stage energy dissipation, effective displacement control, tunable performance, and ease of assembly/replacement. The design detail and working principle of DP-FFS bearing are initially outlined, followed by quasi-static testing of full-scale bearing specimens. Experimental results validate the multi-stage energy dissipation and restraint effects of the new bearings. The performance of DP-FFS bearings primarily depends on the number, orientation, and predetermined gap of damping plates. Shear and tensile damping plates can be activated individually upon reaching predetermined gaps, contributing significantly to energy dissipation. The failure of damping plates mainly occurs at predesigned weakened sections. Finally, the system-level seismic performance of DP-FFS bearings is investigated via a typical bridge case. The numerical modeling strategies of bearings are verified in OpenSees software, and three-dimensional finite element models for the prototype bridges are established. The results indicate that DP-FFS bearings can effectively control the horizontal displacement of superstructures and significantly reduce the adverse effects of near-fault ground motions on bridge structures. At the same time, the response on piers remains controllable compared with traditional FFS bearings.

Natural fractures and pores in carbonate reservoirs are highly developed, but their connectivity is poor and heterogeneity is strong. Traditional acid fracturing has a limited number of communication reservoirs, a low probability of communication, and a simple and single fracture morphology. Therefore, it is necessary to transform the traditional one-way communication mode into a targeted communication mode, increase the probability of communication, achieve all-round communication around the well storage collective, and achieve complex artificial fracture network structures. However, the mechanical mechanism of the initiation and propagation of volume fractures in fractured carbonate rocks is still unclear during the fracturing process. In order to form a scientific understanding of the expansion morphology and mechanism of volume fractures in fractured carbonate rocks, an analytical model for the propagation of complex fractures in fractured reservoirs was established. Physical simulation experiments on the initiation and propagation of volume fractures in fractured carbonate rocks were conducted, and a neural network algorithm for complex fracture networks was constructed. The optimal construction diagram for multi factor coupled connected fractures and grooves was drawn to guide the optimization of volume fracturing technology and improve fracturing effectiveness.

During the long-term water drive development of the reservoir, the reservoir parameters, fluid dynamics, and other reservoir states change progressively, resulting in the internal flow field of the reservoir and the actual geological situation configuration being inconsistent, and the water injection wave efficiency is reduced, affecting the development effect. Therefore, the characterization and evaluation of the flow field adjustment potential in the reservoir is of great significance for reservoir development and scheme optimization and adjustment. In this study, based on the three evaluation dimensions of reservoir material base, crude oil driving situation and inter-well crude oil flow situation adaptation, combined with stratigraphic structural parameters, and comprehensively considering the subsurface static inhomogeneous situation, flow field suitability, residual oil driving situation, etc., we establish a multifactorial coupling index to guide the selection of reservoir preferential adjustment targets. And the cluster analysis method is used to establish the flow field grading evaluation standard, to analyze different flow fields and then determine the adjustment measures, optimize the development and adjustment scheme, and improve the development effect. The application of the flow field evaluation and adjustment method established in this study for the offshore multilayered sandstone reservoir P increases the oil recovery, reduces the water content, and increases the recovery degree of the adjusted reservoir by 0.33 percentage points, and the development effect is significantly improved. Meanwhile, compared with the development adjustment program prepared by the traditional method, we found that the content consistency is high, which confirms the reliability and practicality of the method. The method has been applied to three Chinese offshore oil fields, providing optimization suggestions for field development adjustment.

Computational software based on Reynolds equation is widely used in the design of tilting pad journal bearings, its accuracy generally satisfactory for ordinary operating conditions. Computational models can be particularly useful to quickly quantify the sensitivity of certain bearing parameters tomanufacturing tolerances, errors in assembly, and uncertain operating conditions. In this paper, predictions obtained from a thermoelastohydrodynamic model are compared against experimental data procured from static load tests. The flooded configuration test bearing is a four-pad, load-on-pad, with centered pivots and 0.3 pad preload. The shaft angular speed reached 12 krpm (surface speed 64 m/s) with a maximum unit load of 2.0 MPa. The supply oil flow rate varied from 50% to 150% of its nominal value. The model predictions with nominal input data fall short of reproducing many of themeasured results. The largest differences amount to 8 degrees C in the loaded pad peak temperature, 23 mu m in bearing eccentricity and 5.9 kW in power loss. A sensitivity study to changes in the pad geometry, clearances and fluid viscosity produced variations of up to 4 degrees C in pad peak temperature, 12 mu m in bearing eccentricity, and 1 kWin drag power loss, hence reducing the gap between predictions and experimental results. The study reveals that, to improve the agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results, the model uncertainty should always be quantified.
