The purpose of this publication is to present, in one book, various approaches to analytic problems that arise in the context of singular spaces. It is based on the workshop 'Approaches to Singular Analysis' which was held on April 8-10, 1999, at Humboldt University of Berlin. The aim of this workshop was to bring together young mathematicians interested in partial differential operators on singular con figurations. The main idea was to look at different approaches that have been proposed, and try to understand to which extent they overlap and how they differ. The workshop took place in a rather relaxed atmosphere. The participants appreciated that there was a discussion session every day, which gave a lot of room for an open exchange of ideas. This book contains articles by workshop participants and invited contributions. The former are expanded versions of talks at the workshop; they give introductions to various pseudodifferential calculi and discussions of relations between them. In addition, we invited a limited number of papers from mathematicians who have made significant contributions to this field. Unfortunately, several of these invita tions were turned down due to other commitments. For this reason, only a very small number of contributions from non-participants remain. The absence of any particular name from the list of (invited) contributors should not be interpreted as a bias of the editors against that scientist. It rather reflects our restricted choice of invitations due to lack of space.

R. S. PHILLIPS I am very gratified to have been asked to give this introductory talk for our honoured guest, Israel Gohberg. I should like to begin by spending a few minutes talking shop. One of the great tragedies of being a mathematician is that your papers are read so seldom. On the average ten people will read the introduction to a paper and perhaps two of these will actually study the paper. It's difficult to know how to deal with this problem. One strategy which will at least get you one more reader, is to collaborate with someone. I think Israel early on caught on to this, and I imagine that by this time most of the analysts in the world have collaborated with him. He continues relentlessly in this pursuit; he visits his neighbour Harry Dym at the Weizmann Institute regularly, he spends several months a year in Amsterdam working with Rien Kaashoek, several weeks in Maryland with Seymour Goldberg, a couple of weeks here in Calgary with Peter Lancaster, and on the rare occasions when he is in Tel Aviv, he takes care of his many students.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of Harold Widom (1932–2021), an outstanding mathematician who has enriched mathematics with his ideas and ground breaking work since the 1950s until the present time.;It contains a biography of Harold Widom, personal notes written by his former students or colleagues, and also his last, previously unpublished paper on domain walls in a Heisenberg–Ising chain. Widom's most famous contributions were made to Toeplitz operators and random matrices. While his work on random matrices is part of almost all the present-day research activities in this field, his work in Toeplitz operators and matrices was done mainly before 2000 and is therefore described in a contribution devoted to his achievements in just this area.;The volume contains 18 invited and refereed research and expository papers on Toeplitz operators and random matrices. These present new results or new perspectives on topics related toWidom's work.

The volume is dedicated to Lev Sakhnovich, who made fundamental contributions in operatortheory and related topics. Besides bibliographic material, it includes a number of selected papers related to Lev Sakhnovich's research interests. The papers are related to operator identities, moment problems, random matrices and linear stochastic systems.

Thisvolumeofthe operator theory: advances and applications series (OTAA) isthe ?rst volume of a new subseries. This subseries is dedicated to connections between the theory of linear operators and the mathematical theory of linear systems and is named Linear operators and Linear Systems (LOLS).Asthe- isting subseries advances in Partial Di?erential Equations (ADPE), the new s- series will continue the traditions of the OTAA series and keep the high quality of the volumes. The editors of the new subseries are: Daniel Alpay (Beer–Sheva, - rael), Joseph Ball (Blacksburg, Virginia, USA) and Andr´ ´ e Ran (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). In the last 25–30 years, Mathematical System theory developed in an ess- tial way. A large part of this development was connected with the use of the state space method. Let us mention for instance the “theory of H control”. The state ? space method allowed to introduce in system theory the modern tools of matrix and operatortheory. On the other hand the state space approach had an imp- tant impact on Algebra, Analysis and operatortheory. In particular it allowed to solve explicitly some problems from interpolation theory, theory of convolution equations, inverse problems for canonical di?erential equations and their discrete analogs. All these directions are planned to be present in the subseries LOLS. The editors and the publisher are inviting authors to submit their manuscripts for publication in this subseries.

This volume collects a selected number of papers presented at the International Workshop on operatortheory and its applications (IWOTA) held in July 2014 at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Main developments in the broad area of operatortheory are covered, with special emphasis on applications to science and engineering. The volume also presents papers dedicated to the eightieth birthday of Damir Arov and to the sixty-fifth birthday of Leiba Rodman, both leading figures in the area of operatortheory and its applications, in particular, to systems theory.

This book provides an introduction to the modern theory of polynomials whose coefficients are linear bounded operators in a Banach space - operator polynomials. This theory has its roots and applications in partial differential equations, mechanics and linear systems, as well as in modern operatortheory and linear algebra. Over the last decade, new advances have been made in the theory of operator polynomials based on the spectral approach. The author, along with other mathematicians, participated in this development, and many of the recent results are reflected in this monograph. It is a pleasure to acknowledge help given to me by many mathematicians. First I would like to thank my teacher and colleague, I. Gohberg, whose guidance has been invaluable. Throughout many years, I have worked wtih several mathematicians on the subject of operator polynomials, and, consequently, their ideas have influenced my view of the subject; these are I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, L. Lerer, C. V. M. van der Mee, P. Lancaster, K. Clancey, M. Tismenetsky, D. A. Herrero, and A. C. M. Ran. The following mathematicians gave me advice concerning various aspects of the book: I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, A. C. M. Ran, K. Clancey, J. Rovnyak, H. Langer, P.
