During the past decade, much focus for research and development in re-entry flows has been centered on the Shuttle program and the Jupiter atmosphere entry probe. Boundaries of this research area are expanding rapidly by new advanced applications such as: aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicles (AOTV) that achieve payload economy by passing through the Earth's upper atmosphere to change orbit, transatmospheric vehicles (TAV) that take off from Earth or a conventional aircraft to enter near-Earth orbit, then re-enter the atmosphere with cross-range capability to land on an airstrip, hypersonic aircraft anticipated to require propulsion by supersonic combustion ramjets, and the Strategic Defense Initiative that potentially involves hypersonic flow phenomena such as associated with signal discrimination. Together, these new applications encompass a broad range of the disciplines common to thermophysics. The present volume is organized into four chapters that highlight recent progress in the following areas of re-entry research: low-density phenomena at hypersonic flow conditions, high temperature kinetics and transport properties, aerothermal ground simulation and measurements, and numerical simulations of hypersonic flows. The papers were selected from the thermophysics sessions at the AIAA 23rd Aerospace Sciences Meeting in Reno, NV, in January 1985, and the AIAA 20th Thermophysics Conference in Williamsburg, VA, in June 1985. They have been reviewed, revised, and updated for this volume.

During discussions that took place during a Colloquium on Numerical Methods for Engine-Airframe Integration at the AIAA 22nd Aerospace Sciences Meeting, several basic questions came to light in regard to the following: availability of computers, status of turbulence modeling, numerical methods for complex flows, and applicability of different levels and types of codes to specify flow interactions of interest in integration. The current volume is organized based on the four invited articles that address those basic questions and the revised and edited contributions. This volume is a comprehensive introduction to the current state of developments and the directions for advances in the application of computational methods as a primary tool for performance estimation and design.

The present volume is devoted to the thermophysics of aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicle (AOTVs). As its title suggests, it is truly a progress volume for it illustrates the recent advances and current thinking with regard to AOTVs. The papers within this volume were selected from the Thermophysics and Atmospheric Flight Mechanics sessions of the AIAA 22nd Aerospace Sciences Meeting in Reno, NV in January 1984 and the AIAA 19th Thermophysics Conference in Snowmass, CO in June 1984. They were revised and updated especially for this volume and are grouped into four chapters, each of which is a distinct and coherent unit: flowfield analysis, trajectories, thermal projection, and surface effects.

This and a companion volume include revised and edited version of papers presented at the Ninth International Colloquium on the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems held in Poitiers, France, in July 1983. The contributions have been assembled into two volumes: Dynamics of Shock Waves, Explosions, and Detonations and Dynamics of Flames and Reactive Systems. The dynamics of explosions, which the former addresses, is concerned principally with the interrelationship between the rate processes of energy deposition in a compressible medium and the concurrent nonsteady flow as it occurs typically in explosion phenomena. The dynamics of reactive systems, which is the focus of the latter volume, is a broader area encompassing the processes of coupling between the dynamics of fluid flow and molecular transformations in reactive media occurring in any combustion system. In this volume, Dynamics of Flames and Reactive Systems, the papers have been arranged into chapters on premixed flames, diffusion flames, turbulent combustion, constant volume combustion, spray combustion, nonequilibrium flows, and combustion diagnostics.
