This volume is based to a large extent on the Conference on Ions in Flames and Rocket Exhausts sponsored by the American Rocket Society in Palm Springs, California, October 10-12, 1962. With the advent of space flight and space exploration and with the current research and development activities in plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics, the subject of ionization in high-temperature gases has assumed an important place in the forefront of research. A perusal of the table of contents will indicate the wide scope of problems in which ionization, i.e., the production of free electrons and ions, plays an important role. To set the stage and orient the reader, who will not necessarily be an expert in this field, we have provided in Section I two authoritative review articles which are concerned with the thermodynamics and the basic elementary processes of gaseous ionization. The information contained therein is basic to the more complex problems discussed in the subsequent sections. The study of the mechanism and energetics of the elementary chemical reaction in flames, as detailed in the papers in Section II, has contributed greatly to our understanding of ionization in combustion systems. Among the many topics discussed in these papers are: chemi-ionization, i.e., the production of ions and electrons in nonequilibrium concentrations through specific chemical reactions, the kinetics and thermodynamics of electron attachment and detachment reactions, electron-ion recombination reactions, and conductivity measurements in flames. The fundamental information obtained from these flame studies has provided us with a better understanding and control of the many complex phenomena in aerospace applications.

The present volume is intended both as a report on, and an authoritative reference guide to, the present status of the closely connected fields of Guidance and Control, particularly as related to missiles and space vehicles. Like its predecessor in the series, Volume 8, this volume had its genesis in a Specialist Conference that was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1963. Although in no sense a proceedings of this conference, the present volume uses the same subdivisions of technology, i.e., Attitude Control, Inertial Guidance, Onboard Techniques, Manned Control, Deep Space Guidance and Navigation, Rendezvous, and Landing. To set the stage and to orient those readers who may not have had exposure to the more rapidly growing areas, the Editors have invited certain introductory review articles. They will assist the reader's entry into the subject and into the literature, and in addition they contain information basic to the more complex situations covered in the succeeding papers. In the selection of papers the guiding rule has been the exposure of diverse lines of inquiry, with particular attention given to those current lines of research that appear to be most promising.

Space power systems were discussed at the Space Power Systems Conference held in Santa Monica, California, September 27-30, 1960. Because of the extensive coverage of the field, it was decided to publish two volumes, rather than one, based on papers presented at the meeting. These two volumes comprise numbers 3 and 4 in the ARS Series on progress in astronautics and Rocketry. Volume 3 is particularly concerned with the scientific and engineering principles involved in the conversion of various types of energy into electrical energy, while Volume 4 is devoted to systems for the production of electric power which are based on these principles. The two volumes are independent but, taken together, constitute an extensive analysis of the broad field of space power systems.

But five years ago, the space technologists of the world were urging that elementary scientific experiments be performed in space. The unprecedented progress since that time has demonstrated the enormous scientific, economic and military utility of space flight. As our planning increases in scope to reflect this progress, it has become evident that space vehicles of great size will be required, which in turn requires propulsion systems of greatly increased capacity. It has, furthermore, become evident that the budgeting of massive development programs cannot tolerate errors in the design of basic systems. Thus the fundamental understanding of the processes occurring in rocket engines has assumed great importance. This realization has brought about ever increasing efforts in rocket technology, as well as in all the other technical areas associated with space flight. Approximately half the papers in this volume were presented at the American Rocket Society Propellants, Combustion and Liquid Rockets Conference held at The Ohio State University on July 18, 19, 1960. The other papers had been submitted to the American Rocket Society for publication, and were chosen for this volume in order to round out a coherent presentation of several topics of current research interest in liquid propellant rocketry. Among these are the performance of rockets at high altitudes, combustion instability, and engine improvement through component development.

Many requirements must be satisfied in order to achieve a successful spacecraft mission. One very pervasive requirement is that every spacecraft component must be maintained within either operating or survival temperature limits at all times. This is a very difficult requirement to satisfy because of the many boundary *** examples of the type of heat transfer and advanced thermophysical work that is currently being done in response to space mission needs are contained in this volume, such as: discussion on the recent past, status, and future directions of thermophysics, aspects of the critically important area of thermal and visible radiation properties of solid/vacuum interfaces, thermal conductance across joints, thermal conductance concepts to ball bearings, heat transfer analysis, the rapidly developing area of multilayer or "super" insulation, and thermal control devices.
