The reflection of an oblique shock wave over a straight reflecting surface was investigated numerically in the classical inviscid gas-dynamics framework. A wedge in a steady supersonic flow was used to generate an oblique shock wave that was reflected from a symmetry plane. It is well known that for the steady reflection there exist only two possible configurations: the Regular Reflection (RR) and the Mach reflection (MR). The criteria of transition between them are well established for steady flows. In the present work, the leading edge of the wedge was subjected to slow/rapid rotation or periodic oscillation with different amplitudes creating unsteadiness in the flow. Such unsteadiness may cause premature RR -> MR transition. However, little research has been conducted to show the effect of a continuous excitation on the dynamic development of shock wave reflections. For the rotation and oscillation of the wedge an overset framework is employed, where components are meshed individually (multiple cell zones) and typically embedded in a background mesh. The resulting multiple overlapping cell zones are connected by an overset interface. Overset grids maintain grid quality during mesh motion. The results for a flow Mach number M = 4.0 contradict the state-of-the-art knowledge regarding the RR -> MR transition in steady flows, particularly for higher rates of wedge rotation. Well-conducted experimental data is often obtained in low-noise wind tunnels and numerical studies ensured disturbance-free computations to match with the experimental data. Unlike previous reports, for unsteady flows created by periodic perturbations, flow sustained a stable MR pattern well beyond its steady-state dual solution boundary.

In our paper, we report an alternative idea, how dust devils can be generated and studied in a well-controlled laboratory experiment. We used a large-scale Rayleigh-Benard experiment with air heated from below and cooled from above to mimic the convective atmospheric boundary layer. We measured the Lagrangian flow field by tracking the flow with helium-filled, and thus, virtually neutrally buoyant soap bubbles. Vortical structures with a vertical updraft and a significant pressure drop in their center have been identified as dust devil-like structures. Generally, they are smaller and weaker in our experiment than real dust devils in their natural environment. Nevertheless, they share many characteristic properties. This pertains e.g. to the lateral migration with the background wind, the arbitrary sense of rotation, or the relation between the size and the lifetime.

As one of the many energy alternatives, the interest in hydrogen-powered rail transport is gradually increasing worldwide, and some railway vehicles powered by hydrogen are currently in operation or undergoing experimental projects. However, due to the unsafe and unstable nature of hydrogen energy, hydrogen has potential leakage and explosion hazards in all rail transport applications. This paper summarizes the main application technologies of hydrogen safety in light of the research progress and unsafe factors in the process in the field of hydrogen-powered rail transport in various countries, at the same time clarifies the development challenges and difficulties of hydrogen-powered rail transport in the future, and makes suggestions for the development of hydrogen-powered rail transport safety in China.

The relationship between different "flavours" of free-stream turbulence and the developed fluctuating strain within/deflections of a circular cylinder is analysed. Regardless of the influence of the free-stream turbulence, bluff bodies at sufficiently high Reynolds number produce turbulent wakes in which multiple turbulent length/time scales exist concurrently and interact with the body's structure, imprinting these multi-scale physics onto the structural response. The present analysis aims to provide more insight on the effect of different free-stream characteristics on the experienced fluctuating loads acting on cantilevered structures, imposed by the conditions both upstream and downstream of the body. A set of experiments is carried out in a water channel, combining simultaneous particle image velocimetry (PIV) and strain measurements, using Rayleigh backscattering sensors (RBS), along four representative polar position sensing lines, to characterise the cylinder's response before and after the shear-layer separation. The cylinder is mounted as a cantilever beam, supported at one end, with 95% of its body submerged and exposed to the influence of the flow at Re= 25000, whilst being subjected to the rising tip vortices developing at its free end. The presence of free-stream turbulence is shown to be more relevant to the standard deviation of the strain development along the upstream face of the wake-generating body with little change observed on the downstream face of the body when comparing turbulent/non-turbulent cross-flow.

An option to overcome the limits of electronics are excitons, quasiparticles generated by the electron-hole Coulomb interaction. A fundamental prerequisite is the possibility to control their properties with optical fields. We adopted attosecond reflection spectroscopy to investigate the interplay between core excitons and ultrashort infrared pulses in MgF2. Their ultrafast response is divided into two contributions, unfolding on different time scales, related to the exciton dual nature. Namely, we discern the atomic-like behaviour, dominating the few-femtosecond response, from the excitonic solid-like characteristics, with sub-femtosecond timing. Theoretical models highlight the role of the exciton binding energy in dictating their optical response.

We introduce a compact widely tunable laser on an InP membrane on silicon platform. The laser features an intracavity filter employing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure, with an optimized design for a single mode operation. Our results demonstrate a 28 mA threshold current, a maximum output power of 2 dBm on chip, effective single-mode operation with a side-mode-suppression ratio (SMSR) of 30-45 dB, and a broad tuning range of 40 nm. The tuning map of the laser was determined using a search algorithm.

We propose a self-aligned fiber-to-chip coupling structure to address optical fiber alignment and mode-mismatch issues between the modes of cleaved single-mode optical fibers and integrated Silicon on Insulator (SOI) waveguides. The structure consists of a suspended linear taper and an innovatively shaped on-chip groove fabricated with a two-step inductively coupled plasma deep reactive ion etching (ICP-DRIE) independent of the silicon crystal lattice orientation. We achieved coupling losses of the order of 2.5 dB per facet, with the optical fiber automatically aligning with the integrated waveguide.

Integrated ring resonators with high quality factors are of interest for a number of applications such as biosensing and spectroscopy. In the context of integrated laser systems, ring resonators can be utilized to achieve narrow linewidth and widely tunable lasers. In this contribution we present our efforts to realize passive high-Q ring resonators (Q > 10(5)) together with gain regions emitting around 1064 nm on the same GaAs-based chip. The enabling technology utilizes spatially selective quantum well removal and two-step epitaxy, as well as shallow and deep etched waveguides. The resulting platform will enable the realization of GaAs-based ring-resonator-coupled lasers.

We report experiments where vibrational wave packets are produced in H-2(+) by the ionization of neutral H-2 by a sequence of two phase-locked attosecond pulse trains (APTs) with a variable time delay. Changes in the degree of vibrational coherence in the H-2(+) cation with the XUV-XUV time delay can be explained in terms of the dependence of the degree of ion+photoelectron entanglement on the two-pulse delay.

The hybrid trains use hydrogen fuel cells and lithium-iron phosphate batteries as energy sources. The powertrain has the advantage of zero emissions and high energy efficiency due to optimizing the power distribution strategy and the recovery of braking energy. This paper proposes an energy management strategy based on the Dynamic Programming Algorithm (DPA) to optimize the power allocation of both power sources to guarantee the power performance of the train and achieve optimal operation at the cost. The method is based on a dynamic programming algorithm to determine the optimum output power of a hydrogen-fuelled engine. Based on the operating characteristics of the train and the characteristics of the respective power sources, the objective function and constraints are established, and the principles for selecting the parameters of the optimization algorithm are presented. Finally, as a driving condition, the train is operated on a specific line in a minimum time operation. The vehicle model and control strategy designed in Matlab/Simulink environment is jointly simulated and verified. Simulation results show that the proposed optimization strategy results in significant savings in hydrogen consumption for the hybrid train compared to the SOC equalization strategy and better meets the train power performance requirements.
