Intelligent computing is becoming a mature ?eld of information and communication technology, covering a hybrid palette of methods and techniques derived from clas- cal arti?cial intelligence, computationalintelligence, multi-agent systems etc. Int- ligent computing is generally known to be computationally intensive from the point of view of resources required: time, memory, bandwidth. As such high resource c- sumption is one of its main drawbacks, distributed computing is expected to give an impetus to its practical utilization. Moreover, intelligent techniques have also proved their usefulness to the core distributed computing technologies like planning and scheduling, load balancing, replication, resource allocation and management, and its applications. Therefore, the emerging ?eld of intelligent distributed computing can be expected both, to bring a fruitful cooperation and to pose new challenges of adaptation of both areas. Intelligent and Distributed Computing 2007 – IDC 2007 was the ?rst Inter- tional Symposium aimed at bringing together researchers involved in intelligent and distributed computing to allow cross-fertilization and search for synergies of ideas and to enable advancement of research in these exciting sub-?elds of computer s- ence. IDC was started as an initiative of research groups from: (i) Systems Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland and (ii) Software Engine- ing Department of the University of Craiova, Craiova, Romania. IDC 2007 was held in Craiova, Romania during October 18-19, 2007. This book represents the peer-reviewed proceedings of the IDC 2007. We - ceived 52 submissions from 24 countries.

In today’s world, the increasing requirement for emulating the behavior of real-world applications for achieving effective management and control has necessitated the usage of advanced computational techniques. computationalintelligence-based techniques that combine a variety of problem solvers are becoming increasingly pervasive. The ability of these methods to adapt to the dynamically changing environment and learn in an online manner has increased their usefulness in simulating intelligent behaviors as observed in humans. These intelligent systems are able to handle the stochastic and uncertain nature of the real-world problems. Application domains requiring interaction of people or organizations with different, even possibly conflicting goals and proprietary information handling are growing exponentially. To efficiently handle these types of complex interactions, distributed problem solving systems like multiagent systems have become a necessity. The rapid advancements in network communication technologies have provided the platform for successful implementation of such intelligent agent-based problem solvers. An agent can be viewed as a self-contained, concurrently executing thread of control that encapsulates some state and communicates with its environment, and possibly other agents via message passing. Agent-based systems offer advantages when independently developed components must interoperate in a heterogenous environment. Such agent-based systems are increasingly being applied in a wide range of areas including telecommunications, Business process modeling, computer games, distributed system control and robot systems.

The importance of Trustworthy and Explainable Artificial intelligence (XAI) is recognized in academia, industry and society. This book introduces tools for dealing with imprecision and uncertainty in XAI applications where explanations are demanded, mainly in natural language.;Design of Explainable Fuzzy Systems (EXFS) is rooted in Interpretable Fuzzy Systems, which are thoroughly covered in the book. The idea of interpretability in fuzzy systems, which is grounded on mathematical constraints and assessment functions, is firstly introduced. Then, design methodologies are described. Finally, the book shows with practical examples how to design EXFS from interpretable fuzzy systems and natural language generation. This approach is supported by open source software.;The book is intended for researchers, students and practitioners who wish to explore EXFS from theoretical and practical viewpoints. The breadth ofcoverage will inspire novel applications and scientific advancements.

This book focuses on grammatical inference, presenting classic and modern methods of grammatical inference from the perspective of practitioners. To do so, it employs the Python programming language to present all of the methods discussed.;Grammatical inference is a field that lies at the intersection of multiple disciplines, with contributions from computational linguistics, pattern recognition, machine learning, computational biology, formal learning theory and many others.;Though the book is largely practical, it also includes elements of learning theory, combinatorics on words, the theory of automata and formal languages, plus references to real-world problems. The listings presented here can be directly copied and pasted into other programs, thus making the book a valuable source of ready recipes for students, academic researchers, and programmers alike, as well as an inspiration for their further development.>
