This is the third book presenting selected results of research on the further development of the shape understanding system (SUS) carried out by authors in the newly founded Queen Jadwiga Research Institute of Understanding. In this book the new term Machine Understanding is introduced referring to a new area of research aiming to investigate the possibility of building machines with the ability to understand. It is presented that SUS needs to some extent mimic human understanding and for this reason machines are evaluated according to the rules applied for the evaluation of human understanding. The book shows how to formulate problems and how it can be tested if the machine is able to solve these problems.

This book focuses on automated negotiations based on multi-agent systems. It is intended for researchers and students in various fields involving autonomous agents and multi-agent systems, such as e-commerce tools, decision-making and negotiation support systems, and collaboration tools. The contents will help them to understand the concept of automated negotiations, negotiation protocols, negotiating agents strategies, and the applications of those strategies. In this book, some negotiation protocols focusing on the multiple interdependent issues in negotiations are presented, making it possible to find high-quality solutions for the complex agents utility functions. This book is a compilation of the extended versions of the very best papers selected from the many that were presented at the International Workshop on Agent-Based Complex Automated Negotiations.

Context: Cross-project defect prediction (CPDP) research has been popular. One of the techniques for CPDP is a relevancy filter which utilizes clustering algorithms to select a useful subset of the cross-project data. Their performance heavily relies on the quality of clustering, and using an advanced clustering algorithm instead of simple ones used in the past studies can contribute to the performance improvement. Objective: To propose and examine a new relevancy filter method using an advanced clustering method DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering). Method: We conducted an experiment that examined the predictive performance of the proposed method. The experiments compared three relevancy filter methods, namely, Burak-filter, Peters-filter, and the proposed method with 56 project data and four prediction models. Results: The predictive performance measures supported the proposed method. It was better than Burak-filter and Peters-filter in terms of AUC and g-measure. Conclusion: The proposed method achieved better prediction than the conventional methods. The results suggested that exploring advanced clustering algorithms could contribute to cross-project defect prediction.

This book is devoted to the encounter and interaction of agents such as robots with other agents and describes how they cooperate with their previously unknown teammates, forming an Ad Hoc team. It presents a new algorithm, PLASTIC, that allows agents to quickly adapt to new teammates by reusing knowledge learned from previous teammates. PLASTIC is instantiated in both a model-based approach, PLASTIC-Model and a policy-based approach, PLASTIC-Policy. In addition to reusing knowledge learned from previous teammates, PLASTIC also allows users to provide expert-knowledge and can use transfer learning (such as the new Two Stage Transfer algorithm) to quickly create models of new teammates when it has some information about its new teammates. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated on three domains, ranging from multi-armed bandits to simulated robot soccer games.

Generally, novice drivers often feel uneasy about driving in unfamiliar traffic environment. In Japan, the road traffic act was revised in November, 2011. This revision authorized the operation of the roundabout intersection which is a traffic-lights-free intersection. The roundabout intersection have been widely spread in Europe, on the other hand, Japanese people are unfamiliar with the roundabout intersection, and especially novice drivers may panic easily. Thus, this paper aims for modeling driving behaviors to support operation of novice drivers. Moreover, we examine the effects of navigation at the roundabout intersection for the novice drivers. First, we built a driving simulation environment for roundabout intersection by using UC-win/Road, and we collect driving logs of a novice driver who drives with navigation or without navigation. Then, we classify the driving log into some discrete driving states (i.e., go straights) on the basis of Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and plot state transition graphs of the discrete driving states to model driver's behavior. The driver model obtained by above method showed the characteristic driving behaviors of novice drivers in the simulation environment.

This volume focuses on uncovering the fundamental forces underlying dynamic decision making among multiple interacting, imperfect and selsh decision makers. The chapters are written by leading experts from different disciplines, all considering the many sources of imperfection in decision making, and always with an eye to decreasing the myriad discrepancies between theory and real world human decision making. Topics addressed include uncertainty, deliberation cost and the complexity arising from the inherent large computational scale of decision making in these systems. In particular, analyses and experiments are presented which concern: task allocation to maximize the wisdom of the crowd; design of a society of edutainment robots who account for one anothers emotional states; recognizing and counteracting seemingly non-rational human decision making; coping with extreme scale when learning causality in networks; efciently incorporating expert knowledge in personalized medicine; the effects of personality on risky decision making. The volume is a valuable source for researchers, graduate students and practitioners in machine learning, stochastic control, robotics, and economics, among other elds.
